View Full Version : white rice alternative?

hey guys
i eat alot of stirfrys (just nuke some frozen veggies, fry up some chicken or beef and throw on rice or noodles)
unfortunately, i really dislike the taste/texture of brown rice and i know it's healthier but it just tastes tough or like nuts/seeds so i tend to lean towards the 'healthiest' white rice that i can find.
the current stuff i have is close to nutritional value as it's brown rice counterpart but it's still got like 79g of carb (jesus!) so i'm trying to figure out what else i can put my chicken/veggies on top of. i know pasta is just as bad in carbs and so are noodles...
i've given the brown rice a try a few times and i just end up throwing out my meal cause it just tastes so bland and gross haha.
anyways, with that little kid spiel out of the way, what are some alternatives for my dilemma? lol

Cus cus I think its how u spell it, I use whole wheat pasta, I also cannot stand brown rice, but brown pasta is really good

I'd just ditch the rice/pasta and bring in another vegetable. Fresh spinach or sprouts? I tend to do stir frys but just skip on the base and use more vegetables.

quinoa, lentils are awesome. Although if you don't like the nuttiness of brown rice odds are you won't like quinoa.

How about basmati rice? Brown basmati is the best, but even white basmati is better. Has to do with the kind of starch found in it. Amylose/amylopectin break down at different rates. Resulting in lower GI.

Black rice, wild rice, pearl barley, buckwheat, bulgur. There are a ton of options.

The latest one I found is called Naked Oats. They are a naturally hullless oat and unprocessed.

I usually cook up a rice cooker full of brown basmati, naked oats and quinoa with cayenne and black pepper.

+1 on the Quinoa

Edit: I think it has the highest protein levels of all the grains

It does, rather marginal though for the amount you are eating.

1/2 cup cooked is 4.5 quinoa vs 2.5 for brown rice i think

The big benefit of quinoa is that it is a complete protein (ie contains all the essential amino acids). Most grains will lack one or two, usually lysine.

Quinoa is delicious and it's better than couscous. IMO.

Anyone wanna share a good way to cook this Quinoa in the rice cooker?
Is this just cooked plain or how do you guys eat it?
Id be down for a switch from white rice.

Hmm I eat quinoa as a cereal. Hot water, mix it up, and may be add some blueberries. Haven't eaten it as a rice substitute.

2 of my go to recipes in the rice cooker are:

add oilive oil and cayenne pepper (tons)

or

2 diced apples and cinnamon with some oil (not olive though)

why don't you try wild rice? it's nutritional value trumps all other sides like other rice and pasta etc.

You can buy it at Superstore right in the bulk bins..I would go get enough to try for the night and see if you like it..if you do go back buy more. Costco even has it now.
