View Full Version : New Work Suit - Brooks Brothers?

I'm in need of a suit, somewhere around $1000. Something all purpose that I can wear to work on the days I need to, and also on special occasions (work functions, weddings, interviews).

Does anyone have experience with Brooks Brothers suits? I have a few dress shirts from the store downtown and am happy with them so far. I can get a decent discount from BB through work (20%) but would rather not let that sway me if their suits aren't great.

I'm willing to shop, but would rather have an idea of potential stores / lines before I go try on suits all day.

Also, thoughts on colour?

If it helps, I'm 6'2'' and wear slim fit dress shirts.

Thanks in advance.

In terms of color, black or navy works.

If you enjoy more slim fitting clothing, I find it hard to imagine that Brooks Brothers suits would be that intriguing to you..except the Black Fleece line.

Harry rosen? It's a little over a 1000 though depending on what brand you get.

Shop yourself around the downtown suit stores. That place in scotia centre has some stuff in your price range.

Harry Rosen has a sale coming up, for you price range and fit I'd go after a Boss - Jam Sharp or for a bit more a Zenga - Drop 8. Talk to Fabian, he's a good guy over there and understands a budget.

You can get a nice dark grey hugo boss suit from Henry Singer/Rosen/ or Holt for about 800-900. Works for everything.

I would go with a dark/medium grey suit as well.

It is a far more versatile colour than black.

Maxwells Clothiers is in town this week at the Westin. Custom suits range from $450 to $800 depending on the cloth.

Holt doesn't carry Boss here anymore, +1 for Harry Rosen and their upcoming sale

Thanks for the advice. Can anyone give details about the Harry Rosen sale? I googled but can only find old info. (pm please if you can't post non sponsor info)

I might also try a black fleece suit for comparison.

Harry Rosen is good if they have a big sale on. Good advice, go there.

If you have time, don't care about the brand name and don't need a suit right away, go and see Giovanni. He'll make a custom bespoke suit for you for around your price range depending on the fabric you select. Guaranteed it'll fit better than anything off the rack and subsequently tailored.

The quality is great. He made a suit for my wedding. Awesome hand-stitched buttons and surgeon's cuffs.

I would get a charcoal or midnight blue as a starter all purpose suit.

First, most important: DO NOT buy black! Black is for weddings and funerals. Grey or a deep navy blue would be best.

Second, I don't have experience with many tailors in your area, for obvious reasons. But I do love me some Brooks Brothers! Almost all my dress shirts are from there because they fit me perfectly and I love their patterns and fabrics.

I do own a Brooks Brothers suit as well. I love it. The fabric is great, the fit is great, the quality is great, it's just all great. I recommend them to anyone.

Finally, I don't know if this applies to your local BB, but considering its image I would imagine so. My local BB has fantastic service. The best customer service I've ever encountered while buying clothes. That alone makes it worth going back when I need something dressy.

Cliffs: If I had a 20% discount to Brooks Brothers, I wouldn't see a reason to go anywhere else!

EDIT I would add that they have pretty good sales too, but they probably occur more rarely. The day-after-Christmas (don't y'all have a name for that? ;) ) sale here is great, but I don't know how the Canadian sales relate in terms of date and discounts.

Might have to check out Rosen's if they have a sale...

Are those M2M or off the rack?

+1 for charcoal

Charcoal suits can be worn to anything.

Navy blue is acceptable as well, but I don't see it as much as charcoal. Black suits aren't just for funerals - you could wear one to other events, but they might be on their way out again, I don't know - better to stick with charcoal or navy.

If you're only going to have one suit, definitely stay away from lighter suits.

Sure a dark olive green is more than acceptable unless you're a banker LOL

Don't buy a BB. Their entry level lines aren't very good and most of their cuts are meant for 65 year old men. Find a suit from a place that has a more fitted trim instead. Rosen is a good choice for your price range.

+1 on the above suits - I have both of them. They're inexpensive, and great value for the money considering some of the generic brands at the Bay already cost $500.

They're good every day suits so I find I wear them more than my nicer ones.

Would recommend going to a tailor and getting one custom made. Used Umberto's recently after glowing reviews here, and would definitely recommend him and his son.

Just ordered 2 suits from Maxwell to give them a try, but it seems the reviews are pretty mixed on their suits. We'll see how these turn out.
