Still workin on the wheel wells, it's coming along now, the quarter panel will now fit over my new wheel well and will be in the correct position, so I guess what I did worked. It needs a little more cutting and banging to make it line up better, but that's easy.

so i am so smart, that yesterday when i was working on my car, i didnt take one picture till the end, i guess i was just in the zone too much lol, but none the less, i got the driver side quarter panel in, looks really good, i was a little anxious to start bondoing, so i threw a layer down, to realize i forgot to scuff the surface of the new panel lol, so i had to grind it off the new panel, and now i can start again today after work, i need to go grab some more bondo and finishing putty just so i have more than i need, i should probably get a cheese grater too so i dont have as much sanding to do.

anyways here a pic from the end of the night.

Been working on the bondoing of my quarter panels, I am just working out the last low spots then the passenger side will be done, have some shaping to do left but that shouldn't take too long, I have 10 days off work starting today and I'd like to paint my car while I'm off so I'm pretty sure I'll be nice and busy getting everything done, once I'm done these quarter panels things should fly by, I don't have many dings on my car so that makes life easier for me, except for this side had so many dents and dings from their makshift quarter panel they installed, so I needed to flow the bondo out that far :banghead:

Merry Christmas beyonders, I finished my quarter panels finally, they look pretty decent, I'm happy I didn't pay someone to do them because I don't think they would have fixed all the rust in the wheel wells, but after much sanding and thin layers of bondo and finishing putty it is now complete,
I started sanding body panels of the car now, the roof is prepped and ready to go as well as the rear hatch jam, I still have some minor dings on the door to fill but those are nothing compared to the bondo on the quarter panels lol, I am hoping to be done sanding everything by Sunday night, I would really like to get painting, I'm totally over being completely filthy every time I work on my car, heres some pics of the finished quarter panels

Ever thought of working for a restoration shop?

You pretty much did all the hard work cutting out that rust and welding new panels in.. Imagine doing this on old Mustangs, Chargers, Camaros, challengers.. etc..

Can make a pretty penny doing that.

For me body work IS the easy part.. Remembering how to put all the wiring and dash and engine back together and shit is the hard part for me haha

derek_k
12-27-2010, 01:37 AM
haha im not too sure if i ever wanna do this core of a restore ever again lol, its a ton of work, i seriously havent left my house in the last 2 weeks at all besides going to work. i already got a decent job doing home renos so im not really looking to change what im into. the wiring in my car is extremely simple, there are gonna be a few tricky things but for the engine all i have is one big harness, the rest is all headlights/horn/windsheild wipers ect. ive ripped down my eg's quite a few times so im pretty familiar with everything in them. im pleased with how the primer turned out so far, gotta find my fenders tomorrow, i hope they have them in stock somewhere.

What brand and where did you buy that black seam primer from?

How is it applied? does it come with a brush of some kind?

Thanks dude, looks amazing.

derek_k
12-27-2010, 02:23 PM
I you can buy the seam sealer from basically any body supply store, I used brush on seam sealer, it comes in a paint can and not in a caulking tube, I put on a rubber glove and went at it smearing it into all the seams and filling gaps with it, it worked good for me

derek_k
12-27-2010, 08:40 PM
So I finished priming today, will sand either later tonight and paint some tonight or else start tomorrow, I might do it tonight and do it the same way I primed, engine bay door jams and all that other shit then paint the rest tomorrow, all the primer I just sprayed should be dry semi soon

You must have missed something indeed, the guy is pretty deadly with a rattle can.

derek_k
12-28-2010, 03:19 PM
Paint is paint, it doesn't really matter how you lay it, it all comes down to your prep work, all of it's being sprayed with cans, please inform me of what's different about cans and a gun besides the easiness the clean up is with cans compared to a gun, have you ever even painted before? And more than a bumper.

03ozwhip
12-28-2010, 03:29 PM
dude, i said i wasnt trying to be rude, no need to be a dick. my dad is a body and paint man, won a ton of awards, ya, painted alot of shit more than a bumper believe me.

ive used spray cans and guns and there is a huge difference, thats why there are spray cans and spray guns because the quality is not the same i dont care how deadly you are with a paint can.

all im asking is why you decided to do your painting with acan vs doing it properly with all that work put into it already. not saying it wont look ok, but really youre already doing it so it doesnt matter what i think.

derek_k
12-28-2010, 03:35 PM
Once again man paint is paint, it's the same shit you put in a gun just in a can, with the correct technique and prep, it looks damn good just from spraying, after a quality wet sand and polish it looks better than oem paint, I've sprayed a gun and cans, cans are not only cleaner but easier, and you don't have a compressor driving you crazy the whole time your painting

03ozwhip
12-28-2010, 03:46 PM
not doubting what you can do, ive been around painting cars for a loooooooong time and ive never seen any car come out good with a spray can, id love for you to prove that wrong, believe me ive been following your build and up until now i loved it.

let me love it again with a good solid paint job! thats all i want to see!

i love the color choice.

i agree with your conversation about paint gun vs paint can as well.
a lot of body shops get custom paint mixed into cans for touch ups these days.
and if you get a small run with either the paint or the clean, well thats what a nice wetsand is for ;)

Ukyo8
12-28-2010, 08:13 PM
lookin awesome

how long are you gonna let the paint cure for before you wetsand and polish?

derek_k
12-28-2010, 08:22 PM
I will probably let it cure for about a month, we will see, you can really feel once the paint starts to get hard, If it's not cured yet it almost feel like a latex glove over the car. Who knows when it will be ready, I need to buy some more compounds anyways, I'll have to get that next payday

Thanks for the compliments everyone, there are some imperfections in the paintjob as of right now, my quarter panels could have been done a little better, but that was my first time ever really using bondo to that extent, so there are some scratches and a little line where you can see where the bondo ends, and the doors fisheyed on me a little, kinda choked about that but I'm gonna try and put touch up paint in the fisheye before I wetsand it, to atleast put color in the hole versus seeing primer or whatever it is, and if worst comes to worst I guess I'll have to repaint them, but I'll try the touchup first. but other than that the paint turned out just how I expected it to if not a little better, I definently have something I can work with wetsanding and polishing

So it has been a while since I've had an update, I've slowly been putting some things back together and working on the wiring part, I have the power windows hooked up and working, and most of the panels on minus the front end, I need to respray the fenders cause I was a little light on the top of them for paint, today I started molding my door panel to fit the power window switch for the driver side, anyways here's some pics

Passenger door, it was really confusing trying to figure out which wore went to each regulator, because of the reason they are rhd windows and I wanted the driver switch on my side, the problem that occured was that the original driver side had 4 wires to the regulator and the passenger had 2 wires to the regulator, so the passenger switch had 2 wires that go to the regulator but that regulator is supposed to have 4, so if you just wired it "normally and color matched" things would have been backwards, but I got it first try and it all works so im stoked

So I finished the door panels today, they look pretty good, I put the old piece of suede over and it feels nice and smooth and looks oemish, I also relocated the resistor box to where the wiper motor is, I have a question for people, i have these two clips ones green and one is blue, they come out of the main under dash harness, its by the under dash fuse panel, and they are the only clips coming out of the loom, they go together with eachother but it just seems weird to me, I had it labeled as fuse panel maybe, as in it clips onto the top of it to hold it in place, I need to know If they are supposed to be together.

Just a question out of curiosity, would the door panels of a 92-95 Civic coupe work (assuming they have power windows)?

Yes the hatch and coupe have the same doors..

They do not have power windows, only 4 doors came with them and they don't work. To my knowledge it didn't even come as an option in egs in north America, I'm pretty sure only in rhd cars they got them.

The civic Ex/Si coupe had power windows here in north America

No Canadian Domestic Market (CDM) nor US Domestic Market (USDM) 1992-1995 Honda Civic 3dr Hatchback models (CX, VX, DX & Si) had Power Locks (PL) or Power Windows (PW) as standard or even optional equipment. This includes the upper-end Si model, which had almost every other option imaginable, but still came with manual door locks and manual windows. The Si did have Power Mirrors (PM), but other models did not (though possibly a factory option on the DX). The 2dr Coupe line of Civics had a similarly configured vanilla-flavoured all-manual DX model (Power Mirrors possibly a factory option), but also an all-power equipped USDM EX model, with Power Locks, Power Windows, and Power Mirrors (and door-panel mounted Tweeters 1994-1995). The Si Coupe, only available in the CDM, came like its Hatchback brother equipped with Power Mirrors (and Tweeters), but no other power options. The Coupe body type is notable because the door panels on Coupes are a DIRECT FIT replacement for the door panel on your Hatchback. Therefore, from an EX model, this gives you access to a door panel that hosts the Power Lock switch and Power Window combination switch/door cup (and Tweeters).

So I have been taking a little break from working on my car, just been doing a few things here and there, but I got my new polishing products and stuff from auto obsessed today, I tried them out and they are working great, the water bead on this wax is unreal, and it's really only a 2 stage process from the cut to finish, wipe on this final finisher as a third step and wipe it off and it's good for wax, and the cut is crazy almost removes every scratch after the first polish, paying more for the product definetly makes a difference in the final finish.

Cleaned my engine up as well

I only went so far on the panel to see the difference between my old products and the new product, I did wetsand it more though, but still the difference is ridiculous, you can't really see in the pic though

I applaud you sir. Great work .

Just curious, how are you planning on cutting/buffing the creases/tight spots throughout the car? Like the engine bay, door frames, inside etc.?

Thanks man, I don't plan on doing much to those sections, I sprayed extra paint there so it was really thick and would then be a little smoother, I am planning on just putting this final finish stuff on then waxing all of those areas

Wow Derek!

Took a look at the thread and very impressed from all the work you have put into this car on your own.

Let's see;

- Body work
- Welding
- Wiring
- Mechanical
- Upholstery
- Paint
- Polishing

I'm sure I missed several trades / skills on top of the above.

Keep up the great work!!

I used a millermatic 140, with a .025 gauge wire, and gas as well, I can't remember the name of the gas though right now, it was like 75% co2 and 25% something that starts with an a lol.
