hey everyone, so i purchased a eg that had a k20a in it about 4 or 5 months ago for a really good deal, it wasnt in the best of shape, or didnt really have the mods done it should have. none the less, ive put in a bunch of time and effort into this car, and its still nowhere near complete.

seems this is a k20 type r ive basically decided everything needs to be mint, so that is why im going through the extra efforts to make it all as good as can be.

this is a photo from the day i bought it on the way home

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/keg.jpg

shot of engine bay

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/kegengine.jpg

i then bought a cf hood and spoon mirrors

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/e7ecd33f.jpg

i put red suede on my doors, put my old integra seats in, painted the gut to color match the car, changed out all the interior panels from blue to black, also painted the headliner black.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/25d1495a.jpg

got myself a spoon replica cf lip,(definently not as strong as real spoon as i used to own one, if anyone has a REAL spoon front lip for sale let me know, i willlll buy)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/97cda898.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/af0a10a9.jpg

i then got a roll cage, it was purple so i color matched it to the car

then i got some recaros

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/62826383.jpg

then i had to take a little break from the car, had to get a winter car, fix it up yada yada, so it sat for about a month, till i got my new wheeeeelssss

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/26e0f004.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/919e3dd8.jpg

and now is the time to park it, so i have started to rip it all apart as it is getting a full new paintjob, new rear quarter panels wire tuck and much more.

engines out

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/84eecc31.jpg

and now time for the fun, i never knew what i was getting myself into or what the previous owner was trying to do, widebody kit or what, but none the less, i knew it was fucked up from the start, but never knew how fucked.

if you looked straight down the panel, and it was really noticeable from the side molding, from the door to the rear wheel well it would stick out a good inch from where it was supposed to be, it drove me crazy forever, so i bought new rear quarter panels and started to see what the fuck happened under there

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/b737be48.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/63ceb968.jpg

as you can see, there is so much bondo on it, i could actually flatten out the side molding, as if they where shaved basically,

Ya the rust was worse than I was expecting, I'm guessing lots of water or condensation was between the original quarter panel and the slab of metal thrown on top lol, so it did create some more surface rust there, gotta find out a solution to the extra rust lol, and the reason egs passenger side rusts so bad is because they only have a ventilation recirculator on the driver side, so when your driving in the rain or warm then cold there is no way for the humidity to release itself quickly enough to not produce rust, I just leant that recently lol

Thanks for that man, I'm stoked for the final product too, I'm really anxious to paint it, still gotta pick the color, but as of right now I think im gonna do rootbeer metallic or something very similar to it, I've had flat black, gloss black red and white already so I'm looking to do something a little bit different than oem civic colors, hopefully it will look good

yowsers! I thought mine was rusty. In my case I used a new set of fenders to make new rear quarter arches. It worked pretty good but yours looks beyond that :( Wish mine has the K20 though .. Cool build keep it coming

I already have new rear quarters, the rust just exceeds the new quarter panel by a little bit, but it is not showing on the under side at all, does anyone know if there is a way to remove the rust permanently without replace metal? It does just look like surface it does sand off and look normal again, or is the metal basically infected? I'm guessing it was from the metal on metal contact cause there was space between the two sheets

If you eliminate every bit of oxidation and treat the metal appropriately, you will have eliminated the cancer. Unfortunately, its rare to be able to do this 100%.

11-26-2010, 07:01 PM
So I continued sanding and finished off basically all the bondo that needs to be removed, still have some feathering I need to do, but here is my problem, I traced out the new rear quarter onto the car and below my side molding the rust continues past where the new rear quarter replaces and one section is through, so there isn't really a way of curing that besides replacing the metal, that part needs to get bondoed anyways for the new rear quarter, the only thing is I'm not to confident on my metal shaping because I've never really done it lol, maybe go cut that part off a car at pnp or something or if someone has a shell and there is no rust there if they will let me have it that would be an alternative besides banging a fresh piece of metal to the shape of it

Anyways heres some pictures, the rust is through by the 2nd drill out hole to the right of my line and I think it is through at the bottom by the 2 holes there as well

I don't want this problem to ever return

So I ordered a larger quarter panel for the passenger side, seemed to be the easiest way out of that disaster lol, it will be here in 10 days

So the cancer will be gone, just need a piece of sheet metal to bang into shape for my wheel well, that doesn't need to look as pretty just as long as it's rust free

I guess I can focus on other things now until I get that quarter panel, maybe I'll start prepping the engine bay

And here's a pic of two colors I'm thinking about, I like the one on the right more, it's hard to see the left color but it's a little more purpley burgandyish than the right which is more brown

Did you consider marking those holes in the bay you wouldnt be needing so you can get them filled & painted?
I only thought of this after i had stripped the bay.
I sprayed my engine bay outa can so maybe i'll consider this once i have the car running.

About the prop valve, I havn't heard about the kit til u mentioned it.
Im gona go google it now.

the only way you save money painting a car is if you do it yourself, sorry but im not gonna spend this much time on someone elses car, DIY, try google or youtube or something, you'd be suprised at what you can learn, i did not do a good job my first time around, so do some research or you will have a headache 100%

and myz, basically every hole is not needed in the engine bay lol, but no im not gonna shave them, i dont really like the look of it, i will be filling a few due to their size and stuff, but for every hole, im gonna let them be

So I'll do a little write up on spray painting to the fullest lol,

So I start off by scuffing the paint with 240 grit sandpaper, I use a power sander for this as it doesn't really matter too much cause your priming it, just be sure to keep the sander moving so you don't get a low spot in the paint your sanding down, no need to go all the way to bare metal as it doesn't matter

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/65701bfb.jpg

Now you blow the panel off with an air line to get all the dust off, don't wipe it clean With a rag or anything, you want the little bits of dust that don't get blown off, it helps the primer and the paint adhere

Now you start priming

Don't lay it thick at all at first, thin thin layers for the for 2-3 layers, give it about 2 minutes flashtime between layers, on your first 3 or 4 layers you will still beable to see through the primer, but once it's almost covered you can then really go at it with some more paint to cover it fully

First layer

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/acbd421e.jpg

Second layer

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/07979a78.jpg

Third layer

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/ee87ae9a.jpg

As you can see there are still a few spots that are not covered, I was covering over white which is very easy to do, if the car was black before you would beable to see it a lot more still, once you get to this point you can really go at it, give it one or two more layers to ensure you have enough to sand before you paint so you don't scuff through your primer

Layer 4

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/9eff9bca.jpg

Layer 5

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/d05ac1e4.jpg

Now that your done primer, I like to use 500 grit before paint because it doesn't show as Many scratches if any at all, so hit the panel with 500 grit sandpaper and do it in a X formation, so go across the panel one way the come back the other creating a X, don't sand too much just a nice even amount over the whole panel, you do not want to sand through your primer

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/b9702a36.jpg

Now blow off the panel with a air line to remove dust from it, once again do not wipe it down, and now your ready for paint, just like the primer thin layers and once is fairly covered you can go at it, just like primer as well, 2-4 minutes flashtime between layers, on the heavier layers give it a little more.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/a4468638.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/4e861aaa.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/55c25d68.jpg

I went at it after this layer with a heavier coat to cover it

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/eebc99ec.jpg

And one more final layer to ensure coverage

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/9551def7.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/2c33731c.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/22d6ebf8.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/kashminsky/7f305754.jpg

Now that your done painting you wait for it to dry then if you want it to look really good you wetsand and power polish it, I will be doing that once this panel drys to see what the full potential of this color is.

What do you think of that color to paint my car, it was really hard to get a good picture of the color, that's why I posted a few, I think it looks pretty good, nice flake in it

It will probably look black at night though if your not looking at it the right way it's pretty dark, I need input people I'm stumped one which color to choose

Both Colors seem pretty shweeth.
I guess you can pull them both off with the right color wheels & small accents.
Personally, I'd go with the Rootbeer tho :)

So I have been doing a lot of boring work to the car like remove stuff that doesnt need to be there, like the goop on the door under the plastic that is never there anymore, that was a terrible idea to start but seems im doing power windows in the future it will be nice and clean to work on them, also did some relocating of wires and stuff and just cleaning everything up, I removed all the wires from the interior that will be in my way of painting cause I want to have as little to tape off as possible. I also have the windows all removed now as well, took the prop valve and fuel filter off the firewall, and cleaned all the gunk out of the engine bay, next is the interior, my new quarter panel should be here in a few days then I can concentrate on those, probably going to clean the inside of my car out and possibly start sanding and bondoing up little gouges and scratches in the engine bay and inside the car today

Here's some pics

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT waste your time or money on ChaseBays products or business

took 4+ weeks for him to ship out my "in stock" harness, I also ordered

a Hondata 4 bar which was never shipped...took 2+ months of CONSTANT

emails and phone calls to get a refund and to which it wasn't a full one

either, I showed him the receipt of the $125 he charged and he only sent me $100 back...

he was so set on giving me @ first 20% OFF of my next order, it was than reduced to 10%....

My harness was also 2-3 ft short, and 2 of the wires were reversed, the quality

of his materials is pretty high though...I will give him that.

Hey Derek, since I'm doing a brake line tuck and don't want to pay $400 for something I can do for a $100.

Here's some info that I found to be useful from Honda tech (brake line tuck guidlines)

the size of the line used in honda's for brakes is 3/16ths and the male fittings are 10x1.0 metric fittings.

1. Brake adaptors: 10mm x 1.00. Both ends are MALE
2. -3AN tube nuts, tube sleeves, bulkeads, bulkhead nuts.
3. 3/16" brake line

To make it more easier im going to be using all my stock lines. Run all 6 brake lines from the Bay right inside the car and use -3an 90degree tube nuts to have the lines go inside (confusing I know)

Ya it's hard to justify $400 for a few lines and stuff, are you just rebending all your stock hardlines? I would kinda like soft lines.

12-05-2010, 07:25 PM
Yeah im going to hit napa soon.. rebend all the stock lines inside the bay and new lines inside the car, new lines from the mc to interior too

Finally have my engine bay sanded down, took so long and so Many stupid corners, I decided to do a semi-shave in the bay, I'm filling some of the spot welds and overly clutered areas of holes, just for a cleaner look in the finished product, also got my larger rear quarter in, thing is it's a piece of shit lol, so I'm guessing I'll just take the strip off the bottom and attach it to the oem quarter panel, prolly have you confused, I'll post pics tomorrow, possibly change the quarter panels this weekend if I feel like doing it.

Is that single stage paint out of a rattle can?

derek_k
12-09-2010, 09:05 AM
Ya that is single stage paint out of a rattle can, and to clean the crap off the door I used a flatbed at first then a few sizes of flatheads to get the smaller amounts, but the trick is to use a can of wd40, it will break down the adhesive part and make it into a slime instead of crazy sticky, try really soaking it first with wd40 before you start scrapeing it off, you might beable to get it in one large piece, I had a few sections that came up really nice

So I filled some of the holes in the engine bay on the strut towers, I'm not too sure on filling anymore or I may find myself filling them all lol. I have also sanded the interior of the car, not completed yet have one more side in the front part of the car, while I was sanding I found quite a large scatter of surface rust where the drivers feet are, I finished exposing all the rust and am now treating it and waiting for it to do it's thing, theres this stuff called Rustmort ive been using and it seems to do it's job quite well lol, anyways here's some pics, I am very anxious to start painting

Does anyone know if this line goes to the charcoal box(I think that's what it is called, that big Black box below your battery) I need to cut it, it looks so ugly

Yes that lines goes in to the charcoal box just cut it off from somewhere under the car so ur gas fumes don't come in to the engine bay. How are you relocating the fuel filter?

derek_k
12-12-2010, 12:29 PM
Nice that's what I wanted to hear, I'm thinking about getting a inline fuel filter, but then again I may just leave the fuel filter and run it the way it was ran before, it would basically be the only thing on the firewall except for a few other things. We will see, it's a easy mod in the future anyways I have lots of room to work on the firewall with a k
