So I've been told I need to go with a winch that has the capacity to handle at lease double my vehicles weight. I'm therefore looking for a 8000-9000 lb capacity winch. I guess my question is, are they easy to install? Where is a good place to source one out. I always see some at Princess Auto but I'm assuming those are lower duty winches.
Thanks for the insight.

I saw this one at costco the other day and thought: "I need one of those!"

I saw that one too and immediately wanted it because of the hitch mount.. then i thought to myself.."how often am I gonna pull myself backwards through stuff?"
No winch for me... Not interested in putting on a front hitch or buying a winch bumper at this point in time.

Cool great info, thanks all. Who makes the lowest profile winch? My winch bumper isn't all that large.
That depends on what you got for a winch bumper? I've got an XD9000i behind my ARB (when nobody said it would fit).
I wouldn't use anything other than WARN personally. Thats just my preference. However, Superwinch is an excellent brand, T-Max (is a version of a superwinch) is good as well.
And even to go as far as saying I've heard people have good luck with Costco Champion winches.

I am fairly certain that T-max is not a version of Superwinch, they were an independent manufacturer in Australia for a long time before they were bought out by Westin Automotive.
I always thought they were a clone (but in no way buisiness related) to superwinch. But then again, I only ever seen one, And it was on a Land Rover passing through from austrailia......
My winch is integrated. It sux because I have to reach under the damn thing to plug it in. Im looking at maybe going to a hydraulic setup as I have a hydraulic industrial warn now (I forget which one, but its 10,000lbs) - otherwise its for sale.

yah I think I'm getting that costco champion winch for Xmas but it's huge and I'm worried it wont fit on my bumper .. dammit.
Most winches have the same general size and 'bolt pattern' if they are in the same general class. If that makes sense. I reckon it will fit.

What winch bumper do you have? Is it homemade?
I got a good deal on an 8500lb "motomaster" winch at crappytire a couple months ago. Ive used it once so far and it worked just fine. I think its pretty much the same Superwinch they used to have on the shelf, just re-boxed. They were both $399, and I couldnt say no when this one went on sale at $239... :)
