I find nothing beats gaming console controllers. If you have a PS/PS2, you might want to look into one of these:

I have one and use my PS controller on my computer for a few of my games.

I have a good logitech wingman rumblepad. Barely used and just collecting dust.

I'll let it go 50% retail at $20.

D'z, hey I was actually looking at those, but was weary because of XP compatibility... has it not given you problems?

I'm looking to use it for Need For Speed and NES/SNES emulation

In all honesty, I couldn't say because I have it on my 2000 box. If you do have an XP machine, make sure you get the adapter made for XP, since there's two kinds, the XP one and the non-XP one (the link I gave you is for XP). The XP one's the $28 one, while the non-XP is like $24. Also download the latest driver from Soyo's website and you should be fine. It really kicks ass and even had vibration feedback on games that support it. I even used it on N64 emulation games and it works wonderfully.
