Making a random contest. WHO HAS THE COLDEST job on Beyond

How it works

- Submit your entry of why you feel your job (parttime or fulltime) is the coldest .

Submission date: NOW, till December 15, 2010 @ 11:59pm (Beyond forum time)

- Send a combination or partial of photos, description, a writeup of why you think your job is the coldest. The more you describe your job or the more unique it is, the more chances someone will vote for you. (i.e. I'd love to see if someone is working up top of the BOW doing welding or something)...

How to Win
- Top 3 winners will be VOTED by members

Voting
- Beyond members vote on December 16, 2010 12:00am till December 31, 2010

The Prizes:

Each of the 3 winners, a set of (4) sweet ass Tom Co. designed Made In China "B" logo tire bags... (well, I'm still testing them out, the materials, the durability, cost effective, etc... but the winners will be the first set of ppl trying them out)

Hell no, lol... iunno roughly up to 17's haven't tested on bigger rim/tire set, not sure if handles/material will hold the weight, and most ppl won't carry 18's with just a handle.

Sorry, so yea, for passenger car tires and non custom sizes, for now.

Its a Hot Lime Softener...Im not 100% on how it works "exactly" but
its similar to what the city would use to "soften" water..this one is the
biggest design, another contractor (TIW) built it on site and we did all
the tie-ins into it..ranging from 2" Sch.40 to 24" Sch.40. When it got
hydro-tested pressure at the top of the vessel was atmospheric and
pressure at the "cone" was only 19psi!!! iirc it held over 2million L of glycol!!

I make trips up to the North Slope, no pics though :(

It's honestly the worst cold I have ever felt in my life; a 100 foot walk from the camp to the rig feels like miles and the wind rips right through anything you wear.

The average temp while I was on location last winter was around -55 to -60...it's not right, not right at all haha.

I also have a fantastic story about trying to escape Alaska while Mt. Redoubt was erupting, but I will save that for another time.

No kidding. While I was a land surveyor I worked a few days up north. When you are outside for a constant 12 hours, holding onto a metal pole, Unable to wear gloves because then you can't write legibly. That sucks. And the best part, no hills, no trees in sight for cover.. Just open fields... Pure northern arctic windchill. I don't think I've ever been so cold in my life.

Ouch, feel for you man... I'd say you're up there... Unless we get some ice truckers, seal clubbers, etc... I wanna see someone working up top at the BOW, with windchill.

- And your job don't have to be in Calgary... just trying to keep it a local contest, so as long as you're a Calgary RESIDENT (or have family here, or some sort of ties in Calgary)

Coldest for me was when I was up in Fox Creek, setting up an well testing unit.
A 15 hour night shift, in -38 degree weather (without the windchill) the wind was unreal, snow literally going sideways, not down. :nut: With the windchill probably -55 to -60.

Lots of fun carrying 300 pound sections of pipe over my shoulder with one other guy trudging through 3 & 4 ft snow drifts, for 14-15 hours straight. Then try doing that for $200/day (which is the equivalent to a $11-13/hr job)
I dont miss the oil patch not one bit. :thumbsdow

That was back in 2006, when oil patch activity went from going GANGBUSTERS to absolutely dead within 2 weeks.
My district was screaming for people, shutting down trucks because of the lack of work. 2 or so weeks later they laid off 20 out of 60 employees. I was one of them, so while I despised this job a friend got me, I was lucky enough to have a job in any manner.... Although I landed work back in Calgary, so after two weeks of that, I packed up and came back home.

Trust me, that was by far the most shitty job imaginable. :banghead: :banghead:
..dont even get me started on the co-workers...

Ughh, Conklin is one cold fucking place in the winter, been there and done that.
My coldest was -48 + the windchill. First frac treatments on the Ootla Shale gas project for Apache in 2007. I was a fluid pump operator at the time and we always tailgate at the company I work for . We were pumping a job one night and we built a makeshift tent by attaching a huge tarp to the roof rack of our crewvan and the backs of two pickups and standing a 2x4 up in the middle. We had a kerosene heater pumping warm air into the tent and it brought the temperature up to -30 inside. By far the worst 18 hour shift of my life.
http://www.apachecorp.com/explore/Browse_Archives/View_Article.aspx?Article.ItemID=585
We did make history on that lease though with the 5 biggest fracs in North American history.
No pictures as it was what is considered a tight hole at the time and I do not live in Calgary so I am out.

Don't back up your ridiculous claim with some shitty no name weather website. Do your research and check historical weather for November 23rd on a legitimate site like www.theweathernetwork.com

Here's a sample for November 23rd and this is only in Alberta:

Sundre: -39.3 °C
Coronation: -34.2 °C
Rocky Mountain House: -37.8 °C
Banff: -35.6 °C
Calgary: -31.2 °C

943am MST shit could of changed, but for that minute, we could of been the second coldest.

Think except for RMH, we had the lowest high of all of those.

In winter I generally spend every day on roofs repairing Hvac equipment, while some days are nice, many are cold.
In order to handle small parts and connect small wires, often you have to ditch the gloves. After 20 years of this I no longer have any feeling in my lower finger tips.
There is no putting off repairs, people call, they want heat and jumpering safeties is a no no.. You go when people call, dark or light day or night.
When you get to work indoors, its either in 120 deg mechanical room or -30c blast freezer with 5hp motors giving you the windchill of your life..
Its a job I wouldn't recommend to anyone...

Meh, -40s is second rate... I remember installing doors in an unheated pump house up by firebag - -56c according to the big ass thermometer on the wall. Yes that was 'inside'. Took 2 weeks to complete a days worth of work, took 3 days just to get the telehandler unfrozen enough to do 30 minutes of work.

Nowadays - I think I qualify :) I'm that poor SOB out there on nights running that tow truck - yanking beyonders out of snowdrifts, off jersey barriers, fencelines... And I stole one beyonders unregistered integra last week  Dumbass - put a plate on it if your gonna park it on the street.

Got a nice case of 2nd degree frostbite on my ears last week; 3 hours of winching at 3am. -30s wind howling. Ahh it was a good time :) Yes, was wearing a balaklava and a toque; 3 hours out in the middle of a field just sucks.

I have a shitty cell phone vid from Dec '08 at my plant.

My buddy took a cup of process water and tossed it in the air. It instantly turned to snow and ice.

Ambient was -44C, and -57 with the wind.
