The new Mustang is unmistakably linked to the 2003 concept that dropped jaws.

Based on an all-new, fully modern body structure and chassis system featuring advanced MacPherson struts and a three-link live axle with Panhard rod, Mustang boasts an overall ride sophistication unmatched by any of its ancestors. Its braking and handling are nothing short of world class.

It produces all the tire-smoking power the rear wheels – and most drivers – can handle, with a better-breathing 300-horsepower, 24-valve MOD V-8 or 200-horsepower SOHC V-6 engine.

With power comes responsibility, and the new Mustang takes occupant protection to a new level. A stout safety cage, Ford’s Personal Safety System™ with passenger weight-sensing technology, available side air bags and a front structure designed for demanding offset impacts, provide drivers and passengers with the most comprehensive protection ever offered in a muscle car.

What’s more, all this unrivaled driving excitement will continue to come at an attainable price. Mustang will remain the best performance car for under $20,000, and the most affordable 300-horsepower car made today.

300-horsepower MOD-V8

The 2005 Mustang GT is the first mainstream production Mustang to break into the 300-horsepower arena, a place formerly occupied only by legendary Cobra and Boss models. The new level of performance – on regular fuel – is made possible by intelligent application of powertrain technology.

Because of its all-aluminum construction, Mustang’s MOD V-8 – a member of Ford’s modular engine family – weighs 75 pounds less than a comparable cast-iron design and stokes up 40 more horsepower than the 2004 engine. That’s over 50 percent more power than delivered by the fiery, small-block 289-cubic-inch V-8 found under the hood of the classic 1964 model.

Electronic throttle control, faster engine management controls and the new three-valve cylinder heads with variable camshaft timing all contribute to this impressive output.

The three-valve heads with VCT allowed engine designers to use a higher compression ratio with regular 87-octane gasoline to maximize the energy used by every drop of fuel. Intake runners with active charge motion control valves also shape each combustion event for strong, low-end torque and maximum high-rpm power.

New SOHC V-6 Engine: Even More Output

The 2005 Mustang V-6 is powered by a new 4.0-liter, 60-degree, single-overhead-cam engine, replacing the 3.8-liter 90-degree pushrod engine in the 2004 model. It’s inherently smoother and more compact, provides more power and torque and incorporates many of the advanced technologies used on the V-8.

The 200-horsepower, 235 foot-pound engine – gains of 7 horsepower and 10 foot-pounds – features low-profile heads, a composite intake manifold and a sound quality tuned to match Mustang’s powerful image.

The Right Gear: Smoother-Shifting Transmissions

Mustang’s manual and automatic transmissions are also upgraded for improved performance.

For the first time, Mustang is available with a five-speed automatic transmission. The 5R55S automatic provides a unique combination of off-the-line jump and remarkably good highway fuel economy. A powerful new transmission control computer can communicate with the engine electronics 10 times faster than before and precisely controls shift duration and timing.

For those who prefer to compute their own shift points, five-speed manual transmissions are standard. The V-8 powered GT is equipped with a rugged Tremec 3650 gearbox, while V-6 cars get a Tremec T-5 manual. Both benefit from improved shift quality and efficiency. The shift linkage provides quick gear engagement and a solid feel.

Mustang’s characteristic solid-rear axle has evolved continuously over the past 40 years, and the new model takes the car’s signature design into a new dimension.

"We talked to a lot of Mustang owners as we were developing this program," said Hau Thai-Tang, chief engineer. "They are a very passionate group, and a lot of them told us – very strongly – that the all-new Mustang had to have a solid rear axle."

The solid rear axle offers several advantages that play to Mustang’s strengths. It is robust, maintains constant track, toe-in and camber relative to the road surface, and it keeps body roll well under control.

For 2005, Mustang’s rear suspension has a new three-link architecture with a Panhard rod that provides precise control of the rear axle. A central torque control arm is fastened to the upper front end of the differential, while trailing arms are located near each end of the axle.

The lightweight, tubular Panhard rod is parallel to the axle and attached at one end to the body and at the other to the axle. It stabilizes the rear axle side-to-side as the wheels move through jounce and rebound. It also firmly controls the axle during hard cornering. The shocks are located on the outside of the rear structural rails, near the wheels, reducing the lever effect of the axle and allowing more precise, slightly softer tuning of the shock valves.

I guess that letter from the disgruntled Ford employee was real.

It amazes me how Ford can't keep pictures off the internet. Just takes a few mad ex-employees to get the pink slip and start giving out information on future products.

That's the real deal. It has the V6 wheels on it. The GT's are different.

How many would buy the new 05 GT if it came with the following powertrain? This is just a hypothetical question.

Had a 4.6L 3V, VCT 300HP.

Weighed in at 3,800+lbs. GT trim.

Had drive by wire ETC-Electronic throttle control.

New torque based strategy that would not allow mods that increased torque. If you did it would put the car in FAILSAFE drive condition.

That means going to the dealer and having them reset the PCM.

A PCM with no chip port like on the new 04 F150.

That also means the tuners and chip suppliers are going to have to work to decode a all new calibration. That is going to take time to decode and offer a reflash to change the torque tables in the strategy for mods.

Ford's upper management really F'd this one up. 75% of the GT buyers mod or customize their mustangs.

Imagine buying the new 05 and not being able to add a performance exhaust or add any part that increases torque.

They messed up a good thing. We make it look fast, add a second intake valve and VCT and the management blows it by adding a crappy ETC and a strategy not mod friendly. The 03/04 Machs are still faster in the 1/4. The new manual trans stinks also...

You can bet they aren't going to have that information in their brochures.

I will keep my current Mustang. At least I can still do the basic backyard mechanic stuff and be happy I can customize what I pay for....

Bill Ford hasn't a clue that his management has messed this car up. What if the car has a two piece drive shaft like the Lincoln LS?

75% of the customers that buy the GT's like to customize their mustangs. Ford management is out of touch with the public, and this will soon be evident.

Management only likes to see pie charts and numbers. They don't get on here or go to mustang meets to talk to the loyal Mustang owners. The Cheif Engineer and her Boss haven't a clue what the mustang enthusiast is about.

The 05 Mustang would have been so much better if they would have let the engineers run with the project. Instead they made them build a car with one arm tied behind their backs...They wanted it to be as fast as the Mach's.

This Chief engineer in charge of the 05 Mustang has Micro-Managed the Powertrain departments to the point that nothing is getting done. They are just spinning their wheels, not enough people and to much work falling off the tables due to job cuts.

People are being let go to save $$$. Ford will be paying double the cost on warranty repairs down the road.

Those of you that have your Mach's, keep them. It's the best N/A Mustang we ever built. The new 05 will handle. When the new Camaro SS hit's the street it's going to kick the 05 GT's azz...

300HP 4.6L in a heavier mustang isn't going to cut it. Looks only go so far on the street. "Race on Sunday, Buy on Monday."

I'm a Ford man thru & thru and it pains me to see what Managements decisions are doing to the company. This car could have been a great contender on the track and street.

POST3:
This is just a hypothetical response. I'm bound by a confidentiality agreement. I need my job. I hope they let me go. I can't stand this place any longer...

a.) The Powertrain Calibration Chief Engineer for the 05 Mustang is a Woman. I don't need to list her name. She is in charge of small & large V6, V8 North American car and truck powertrain calibration organization.

B.) I was in the same building along with the Mustang calibration engineers. Now moved. Might not be here much longer. Ford will be letting more people go so upper management could get their bonus and raises. It was "let people go, or get nothing at the end of the year." Is what I heard. Makes sense to let the workers go so the money is there to keep the management employed.

C.) Longer wheel base = more body metal. Larger axle housing with rear pan hard bar. Two piece steel drive shaft like on the LS. Added engine weight due to newly designed components. Interior sound deadning. Auto trans is worst case, heavier than the Manual trans.

D.) It's not the same trans that's in the 03/04 Mach or cobra. 6 speed? The shifter in the manual feels like crap. JMHO...

I think the production model looks much better than the concept ... it's curves are much better and less angular.

I also didn't like the air intakes on in replacement of the fast back windows on the concept.

the front on the new stang looks much better than the current model and the concept (IMO). This is honestly the first time i've looked at a stang since 1969 and thought it looks pretty good.

Anything could be better than the current stangs interior with is a POS... so i wouldn't really complain about the new interior. As far as i can tell it's got more HP than last years model...so why are you all whining ? it's not a cobra...it's not a mach 1. its just a GT.... whats ur problem ?

From a design standpoint i feel the production model is a far superior car in terms of style than the concept. the rear on the concept model looked wrong to me. :guns:

It produces all the tire-smoking power the rear wheels – and most drivers – can handle, with a better-breathing 300-horsepower, 24-valve MOD V-8 or 200-horsepower SOHC V-6 engine.

Hrm - I like the production body styling better. And someone will make a work around for modding them too.

wut happened.. looks so cheaped out !

Mustangs have always sucked. Except recent Mach's (to be fair).

I actually thought they might have a decent product this time around. Was thinking of buying one when I saw the concept. LMAO now...figures they'd fuck it all up!

Oh well...I wouldn't touch this car just because of the ECU modding problems. Tell me that, and I'm not gonna care much about the rest of the car. Period. No questions asked, I'm buying something else...

Edit: To be a little fairer, I'll have to actually SEE one in person to evaluate it fully...

you guys have to remember, mustang bodies end up getting mass manufactured, ironing out all the pretty lines from the concept makes it alot more affordable to build and for more ppl to buy

Khyron
01-29-2004, 11:46 AM
And even 18 inch rubber is horribly expensive, let alone 19. Most mustang owners don't bling on the 20s, so if the buyer wants to, let them buy there own wheels (makes sense to me). Forcing everyone to get 18 or 19s is silly.
