I am considering maybe buying a used car in the spring time. I have allways loved the EK Hatch backs. I am just wondering how reliable are these cars.

Thank you:

Mark

My question is, is there a Civic that isn't reliable?

I've never owned a Civic and probably never will, but from what I hear, they are probably one of the most reliable and cost effective cars out there.

Really reliable! If it isn't, it will cost you $400 MAX to make it reliable.

Cheap, reliable, fast. You have picked 2 :poosie:

Honda makes a horrible, unreliable product. Especially the non-performance models. Stay far away.

It's a civic. Still made in Japan. 'nuff said.

EK2.0's are the most reliable, I'd search for one of those if I were you. However, I understand they are equipped to accept only female drivers.

CDM were made in Alliston ON, even the SiR - they've been making civics in canada (alliston) since '84, but still, its a civic, cant go wrong regardless on reliability.

hondas are my preferred brand for winter beaters :D

Yep. My Canadian made Civic was built better than my Japanese made delsol.

Yes. My 2002 SiR is terrible and from what research I have done, the 2001-2005 civics are iffy with loads of tranny problems. EK's on the other hand are more reliable than a wood burning stove. All civic's from 1992-2000 I know personally are really reliable cars. I'm sure the older stuff is too.

Late model Civic Si's are also notorious for 2nd gear transmission problems. Honda engines are bulletproof but some of their transmissions are very weak.

Very true. If only Honda would outsource their transmissions to a company that can build them properly.

It's kind of amazing that they still insist on building their own transmissions in house. I give them credit they make a slick shifting manual transmission but that's probably aided by the glass synchros they use that start to fail over 100 kms if you drive spirited.

I guess you can use soft synchros for smooth shifting but wear out fast or use hard synchros that gives a chunkier feel but last much much longer. Personally, I'll take the chunky tranny that will last forever.

dunno. transmissions for hondas are cheap (older models at least) and i love the feel of shifting in the older hondas.

I remember my wood-burning stove being more reliable. But the civic came in as a close 2nd :dunno:

The EKs you find in Canada were not made in Japan.

I would not own another EK. The D16Y7s are notorious for dying early and are probably the slowest car you'll ever drive. You'll experience things like window handles, hood cable handles, and various other plastic pieces things breaking.

Power options are virtually non existent on the hatchbacks. Brakes are way undersized.

They can be had for cheap though. And gas mileage is great. Parts are cheap too.

The D16Y7 and D16Y8 engines are the worst (post-1988) engines. The good news is you can swap pretty much any other honda 4cyl engine into the EK.

CTR's become legal to import soon. K20 EK9's are reliable ;)

I agree, the D16y7 is the worst honda motor I have ever owned.

I would perfer an EG hatch over any EK, much better motors and car IMO

just buy what ever you want, i owned a ek for awhile and drove the shit out of it and it ran great your chances are 50/50 of getting a lemon. better bang for your buck than some domestic peice of shit.

The y7 is a crap motor but it`s still very hard to kill.

I spent an entire racing season driving the living piss out of my D16y7 and it never died.

Did I mention it had over 270 000kms on it and all I did was change the fluids.

It was actually more reliable than 90% of the other cars on track.

Especially SST equipped evos with cooling issues lol.

My B18C is much better though and is an easy swap :)

or would you rather have a 2002-2004 subaru instead of the civic

jonfoo
12-03-2010, 10:04 PM
you can easily find an ek with a swap already done to it, and it'll still be miles cheaper than a subaru,

and yeah hondas are pretty much bullet proof

rollinv4l

yeah been looking around online at the subaru's even just a subaru impreza is even expensive.

It would be a "much" higher maintenance car, but would be fun and make more power...it's also thirstier too :P

I agree with you, most Honda engine can take a shit kicking. I have owned about 15 Hondas over the last 17 years of driving and have only blown up one motor, oil pump seemed to be shitting the bed and I couldn't afford a tow truck so I just drove it home. Almost made it too.
