PS3 owners... how's the LAN streaming?

I want to move my media player (o!play) to another room, and was going to pick up another one for my living room, but thought maybe a PS3 would be good because of the blu-ray on it. (and GT5, and a few other ps3 exclusive games)

I use to use my xbox360 for streaming before the o!play, and while it did work, it was also a pain in the ass a lot of the time. Couldn't play some media types without 3rd party software on my computer, when I moved a file on my computer, it would take upwards of 15 minutes for the xbox to see it.

So is ps3 as good for streaming as a media player? Or is it as restrictive as the Xbox (ie requires TVersity)

Same deal, ps3 requires a ps3media server or tversity or some other transcoding if you want to play any of the good file types (mkv) without conversion ect. I wouldn't use it for media streaming myself, or the 360 for that matter. I got like 4 WDTV lives in the house, those work well for this type of thing, and use next to no power, just like the o!play (haven't used one myself but they are all relatively the same)

I suspected as much, but thought maybe Sony was more on the ball about this kind of thing. Oh well, another media streamer it is. (probably try a WDTV this time, just for comparing)

I too go the WDTV Live route and I really like it. The only downside is that I wish WDTV had more audio codecs. It makes me so mad when I get my hands on the new Dexter and I get picture but no audio so I have to go to my office to watch it.

Don't download too much TV stuff, but what are they using for sound nowadays? I never had any issues with anything I throw at it

Really? Have you updated it? Where do you get your Dexter's from? I've only ever had trouble with audio on 1 video with my O!Play (and it wasn't a very *cough* mainstream video *cough* :rofl: )

I used to be able to stream mkv at one point with the built in firmware, but the last few updates the support has gone away. My streaming has also degraded dramatically with the last few updates. I'd be watching a movie fine and then it would just freeze, and it was 50/50 if it would recover. Also, some files have video, but no picture. Anyone else experience this?

WDTVlive can use moviewall as well, just have to load custom firmware.

Depending on the model it's a Bluray player as well as a media streamer that is able to play pretty much anything including bluray ISOs at over 50MBps and even supports things like Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master-HD.

The only things it doesn't play is SACD or DVD-Audio discs.

Really? I have WDTV and it plays everything I've ever downloaded, including all episodes of Dexter with perfect DD 5.1 audio.

Make sure you have the audio output set to digital in the WDTV menu, if not everything will be stereo.

My only complaint with the WDTV is that it doesn't play the lossless audio codecs BUT, I also don't want to download 50GB movies, so it's not really an issue. Regular DD/DTS and the ~6-10GB files are fine for the vast majority of movies. If its an "epic" movie I'll go rent the blu-ray.

^the A-210 does pass off the HD audio to the receiver.
It scrapes your collection for meta data and thumbs.
For $200 it's a great player that will play anything.

I like the Live but I spent a pile of money on a 1080P PJer and audio equipment. So HD audio non capable makes it less appealing.
Great for a regular TV. Easy to use!

That Dune HD Smart player for $255 looks great actually, it looks like a more professional version of WD TV with the lossless audio capability and a few other bells and whistles.

I only ever d/l 720p video's, and am not an audiophile either. I doubt I could tell a difference between lossless, and normal (one of the many "joys" of working under jet engines, lol)

Haha I suppose if you look at it like that, it's an advantage.

With a good setup IMO the differences between DD/DTS and DD True HD and DTS HD are noticeable even to someone who isn't an audiophile. With a cheap HT in a box setup or similar, IMO there is no appreciable difference in sound quality between the two.

Not an issue for you though I guess haha, if you're already hard of hearing.

WDTV has an excellent, quick, and easy to use interface but it's just a list, it doesn't have movie pictures (which I actually much prefer as there is less clutter and I can see more at once). It follows whatever format the content is in on your hard drive, and sorts it alphabetically & numerically.

WDTV doesn't support Windows Media Pro codec (something along that line). Is that a lossless audio codec?

Nope it's still lossy.

There is WMA Lossless though, which is lossless hence the name.

I've never seen or downloaded any movie/tv show using either of those codecs, personally. Literally everything I have plays perfectly, audio & all, through the WDTV.

I think that's the only codec that i've encountered that my WDTV doesn't play.

That is not true, you can get a movie thumbs by default, it is in the settings, have to have proper file naming for folder art in the folders to get the pictures.

And beecue, yes WDTV live can have a very similar interface as the popcorn hour, along with all of the imdb info ect, but it will require you to flush a hacked bios into the device, and you have to use thumgen to generate all of that info (very easy), doesn't automatically do it yet. The scene for wdtv is pretty big, so there are alot of crazy things you can do with it. Popcorn is nice and I looked into it, but I needed way too many of them to make it less expensive, might still get the popcorn for the basement when it is all done.

I have a question about something related to this. I have a ps3 media server on my macbook and whenever I try to stream movies wirelessly to play on my TV through the PS3, they are always laggy as hell. So I always end up storing files on my external hard drive from the computer and watching on tv. Anyone know what I can do to get rid of this problem?
