These are truly amazing cars! I owned one for a short time and regret selling it, but i'm happy it went to a Audi nut who will care for it. To me it's the sound of that 5cyl is pure music, no other cars have that growl like a Audi 5.

Good luck on the build, it looks like a clean car.:D

sweet ride man, I love these old S4's but could never find a decent one for sale. Any rust on it?

If you want, I can put you in touch with a few local guys who are into the 5cyl engines... mostly S2 and RS2 conversions. (And one real RS2!)

Should be a beast with a GT30 on it!

I've heard the rumours...

You should put me in touch! I would love to go for a ride in any sort of B3/B4 20vt!

And yea, with the GT3071R kit, RS2 EM and DP/Exhaust, 034 shows 347WHP:

http://www.034motorsport.com/oscthumbwm/w/800/h/465/q/95/f/jpg/fltr/wmi%7CphpThumb/watermarks/034watermark%7CC%7C20%7C0/hash/bbbb2edef660739a6071ab5a4f8a869f/src/images/AANChipSet350whp.jpg

But to be honest, I haven't ruled out the GT2871R kit... I have much research to do. seems like with the FMIC 350WHP should be attainable. This dyno is the same as the 3071 - RS2 EM, DP/Exhaust.

or the GT28RS?!? (354tq @ wheels sounds fun)

props for wanting to tackle an early 90's audi, something i would never do voluntarily, but they're pimp cars for their time, deutschland mafia style.

seat bottom extensions ftw!

I've always liked these cars. I personally would to build an old Volvo T5R wagon with an 5cyl turbo also. Props for building an older Audi.

Nothing major, mostly rock chips on the hood.

The straight 5 layout in the larger C4 chassis (remember this would later become the S6/A6, not an A4) allows for plenty of room to do maintenance. These really are the easiest of all the S-cars to work on.

I think by New Years Part 1 should be done... that's all I'll be able to afford right away.

Part 2 would be nice to have done by May and Part 3 for the end of the summer.

YAY! Most of the parts are here... still need to get the control arm hardware up front before I can do suspension... and on that note, I will be sending my Bilsteins back to the factory for revalving... I'm keeping the same compression but want about 25-35% more rebound.

RS2 HO Exhaust manifold arrived with the gasket kit....

Will have pics later tonight. Got it for $700... 034 lists for $1299 + $175 gasket kit + shipping! Love audifans.com ....

ALSO, managed to snag these for $475 with 2 sets of pads. They will be mounted with 323mm Audi S8 rotors and RS2 caliper adapters + SS brakelines. I fucking love cross-compatibility.

Bigs reds... mine are black.

backdoor ebay transaction... seller asking $600USD, i found them at Orgeon Porsche parts dealer for $600USD new, bargained down to $475USD with 2x pads.

Which S4 front brakes did you get? 92-94 are Girling 60's.

Small update and a bit of progress.

Sold the Big Blacks and Bilstein Sport struts. I'm going to go for Brembo F50's off a D2 S8 (slightly larger pistons and proper orientation for pad removal) and buying a set of blown bilstein sports because they're getting revalved anyway.

Removed the strut assembly/tie rod/control arm/cv . When it's nice outside I'll install the new bits and get this thing running again.

Anyone want to donate money to a good cause =)?

OK clarify this for me. I see you saying that older audis are better. However I am sure you can get any sort of differential upgrades for the B5+ audis that will suit your handing needs, no?

For example. I am looking into impoting an evo 9 and there are literally 4 rear diff options and 3+ front diff options as well as reflashing the active centre diff to get any combination of handling that you want.

I assume this is the same for every gen. audi.

It's really not about the diffs. It's about build quality, powerplant selection, ease of maintenance and cool factor.

Plus, UrS seats are second-to-none

It's also about being able to make 440hp for under $10k, including the cost of the car.

Cool man, good luck.

PS go with the smaller turbo (2871 I think, there is a GTX version out now too). Turbo lag on a DD is just annoying.

2871 was my first choice, especially a GTX2871 (didnt know they made that wheel yet for the 28 trim), but I got a KILLER deal on the 3071R..

Plus, the 3071R makes full boost @ 3000RPM with the RS2 Evo Manifold and 034 exhaust, both of which I have purchased. So I get lots of RPM's to play with, as the engine revs to 7200RPM.

The 3071R also gives me room to make a little more power when I put in rods and bearings.

Sweet ride, Zip! If I can find a decent UrS4 in Calgary or Regina, I think I might pick one up.

Good call on the 3071R - I love mine. What A/R did you get? With your displacement the 3071R won't be laggy at all; in fact, I would have went 3076R on 2.2L. Mine spools very quickly, but I am running 10:1 compression (on 2.0L). If I keep the TT for much longer, I'll put in a HTA 3076R.

3071R can put down some serious power though –_I've seen well-sorted cars dyno in the 450-500wHP range, and traps well into the 11s.

I wanted the quickest spool so a 3071R w/ .63AR made the most sense. Plus, I bought everything second hand from a UrS6 being parted, so it what I wanted just happened to be what was available.

The limit on the stock bottom end is 400WTQ, so 358WTQ is plenty for me. I don't want to have to do rods right away, so the 3071 will be more than enough. Apparently the boost threshold is much lower on the 71 vs the 76, so it makes more sense as a daily driver anyway.

Cheeba
12-16-2011, 03:09 PM
Yeah, .63 3071 would be a perfect turbo for a daily on a stock-compression UrS4, IMO.

Do you guys need to do anything but rods to get ~500wTQ? What can you rev out to without valve-train work? How does the stock head flow?

Technically rods are all you need, but it's a good idea to go RS2 bearings, MLS HG and ARP studs at the same time.

Stock valve-train revs safely to 7200RPM, and the stock head with 7A cams will flow north of 550WHP.

Subscribed! Glad to see this thread isn't dead. I've got a buddy with a couple of these I should point this way. He's also doing a resto on a 2dr quattro sport coupe, I think that's what they called them, you know the ones with factory flares like the old group B cars. He's audi/vw tech but loves the older cars.

I did see that one before I bought mine... he's been selling it for over 2 months and had it listed for $2k for a bit. Steering rack is a PITA and it is by far the dirtiest UrS i've ever been in.

I was thinking of having a look at that car to use as an ice racer only as it looked a wee bit rough in pictures. He had it listed for 2k now its up to 3k ?? I would imagine a steering rack is at least a grand to start.

Rebuilt is about $400, you could also send the one in there for reman.

It drove nicely, but the 034 hoses aren't mounted/fitting nicely and they leak fluids.

Has a forge splitter for extra ricey noises.

The owner is a tech, but it seems like the UrS4 was his guinea pig, not his project car.

There was shitloads of sawdust in the car last time I saw it. It was a good example that was let go.

Let me know if you do pick it up, I'd like to buy the strut tower bar from it.
