I bought mine at a T-mobile store when i was in L.A. I think they have packages there starting at $20 - $5 for the activation fee + sim card and then $15 in credits. If your not going to be using it for long periods of time then the differences from company to company is going to be negligible.

If you are just calling back to Canada then i think the best option is to buy a sim from Red Pocket Mobile, ~$5-10 for a sim and super cheap air time back to Canada. Works anywhere the AT&T Paygo network has coverage.

I'm going to be in the states in a couple of weeks and was wondering the same thing. I'm on an Iphone 4, and would like to not pay roaming + long distance to use a little data + calls back home.

I went to At&T Paid $30 (keeps number for 6 months. Then $2 a day unlimited useage and incoming. Only pay on the days used.

No Data just used wifi as its everywhere.

I think Canada long distance was 7 cents a min above the $2
