I saw this a couple days back. Check out NYC. All the Upper East and West Sides have < 2% black...and everything north has < 2% White. I am currently in a 9% Black/Hispanic zone...and 5 blocks away its 97% Black/Hispanic. It is a very clear cultural divide going from my place to the subway 5 block away. Wonder what a race map of Canada would look like.

I always find this interesting about America, for a nation that is constantly criticized for systematic racism it is still the most ethnically diverse nation on Earth. Interesting on the other end with nations typically thought of as "progressive" (ie. Europe) they get like 10% non-white and 90% white and it has led to a rise in people voting for right-wing extremists.

Divided by Redneck, French, Asian, Brown

I am very surprised with the harsh divides. I expected a bit more of a blend between areas, but the changes seem to be divided by only a street!

The US is VERY racially segregated. I've been to St. Louis twice...

Try Michigan for a laugh.... that was 'scary'.

These kind of places, the white people abandon the cores, and move out to the burbs.

It's weird.

Really cool Map, well done by NYT.

So interesting to see areas of certain cities that are 95% Black and the area right next to it being 95% Hispanic.

I don't know if the U.S is the most ethnically diverse nation, might be interesting to know though that the U.N says Toronto is the world's most ethnically diverse city.

This is the exact reason why the race map would not work out well in Canada. When filling out forms, people don't consider brown people Asians. In forms most brown people end up selecting others, because Asians are assumed to be Orientals.

As for the cultural divide, it is VERY evident. In Manhattan, I live in the unique district between Upper West Side and Harlem. We are separated by 125 st which acts like a boundary. South of 125, you have 1 McDonald's for 50 blocks. North of 125 there is one every 5min walk. Not to mention the pawn shops, fried food joints, cheap clothes, etc.

That more of a combination of racial and economic segregation. Nobody is going to stop a black man from buying a 10 million dollar apartment in Manhattan if he ponies up the cash. On the flip side, if everything was equal, a lot of people would still self segregate based on their race out of personal preference.

The way the USA does its ethnic related senses in a pretty strange fashion, but the group "non-hispanic whites" makes up 68% of the population. Don't forget a huge chunk of America is made of blacks through its whole history.

92.1% white in the UK
87% white in Canada

The USA is on a strong lead in this area in comparison to other western nations and when it comes to the rest of the world whom still hold tight onto racial homogeneity, they are light years ahead of them.

It’s not really bad or "weird" as Toma said, and it’s really exaggerated as a “white” thing. Anyone of any race would bail if their community went from a nice family safe middle class neighborhood to a ghetto slum. You’re saying an upper middle class Asian family wouldn’t leave, only the whites would? But yeah it is called “white flight” because historically mostly whites were in that position.

The US being ahead of everyone has nothing to do with racial diversity.

They are ahead of the world in the terms of being racially diverse...I bet you would be hard pressed to find any nation as diverse as America.

I never said it had anything to do with the USA's overall standing.

Yeah you don't need to look anywhere to see this.
All the white people in Calgary pretty much live in the South.
