For all us Round Eyes that have never seen or heard of it before... pretty cool

The city may have been demolished but the video is a record of the conditions people were living in.

The fortress-like Kowloon Walled City of Hong Kong was demolished in the early 1990s, but a German documentary crew braved the sprawl in 1989 and captured amazing footage from inside this sunlight-less patchwork metropolis.

Way more photos and info here too.... (http://youhadbetterknow.com/knowledgezone/?p=649)

It shows a lot for the ability of humans to endure through such hardships and still go about daily life in a normal (to them) fashion. Really blows my mind.

Public housing from that era is only slightly better. But you actually get a lot less personal space. People would rather stay in these apartments.

Holy damn, looks like something from a type of dystopia film.

This was always something crazy I've seen online from Hong Kong, they must have thought all the foreigners recording this were funny.

wow thats intense... i can only imagine how bad that place smelt! how long did it take for them to tear down that whole city and put the park on top of it from start to beginning?

edit: nvm wikipedia says 1 year to demolish that whole area. What happened to the residents after the government evicted all of them? Just thrown out onto the streets or what?

edit #2: i should really read the whole article before posting.

You know that's from the 90s right?

http://www.engpedia.com/engg/index.php/megastructures/hong-kong-international-airport

I don't know how many of those old building in that video are still standing now the airport's been moved and they are cleared to build new ones as high as they want.

There will always be slums in China. Even when they match Canada's 10% poverty rate, that's still 130M people living in slums.

I was there a few months ago. The park they made in place of it is so nice its hard to believe how shitty it used to be not that long ago. Amazing how they managed to get rid of it and spruce up that whole area so quickly.

Hey, Rome wasn't built overnight.

HK wasn't in a situation for the last hundred years where placing an Airport in a reasonable area wasn't very optional, with the whole Communists and British thing, so they just ended up using an Airport the Japanese dropped in the middle of the city during the occupation in WW2.
