Ok, SZW brought up a good point in one of the threads.

With the winter season coming up, why not do a group buy?

Whos interested? SERIOUSLY PLEASE

I have no clue what type of a deal we could get but I'm sure any tire shop would be delighted if we ordered 10 sets of tires!

This is one that I will definately be into.

Next time I'm at costco, i'll ask the guy there what he thinks.

I'm thinking the smaller stores might be more grateful for the business, but who knows

What brand tire you want? And what tire size you want?

14". and the tires can be 14" too. haha

Yup size should stay the same.

As for me I need 185/65/R14.

i don't know about you guys but arctic alpines, blizzaks, hakas, whatever, doesn't matter, as long as it is designed for winter i'll be happy!

Personally I spend the Few extra bucks for the better tire, cause you never know in winter with an import snow plow

ditto, w/ good tread wear.

I'm sure any snow tire would be better than any all season tire?

But what is the major differences between these different brand snow tires? is there a way to compare them?

2K255HP
09-08-2002, 02:40 PM
From the research i've done on the blizzaks and alpines, it seem that the blizzaks are the better snow tire, offering better handling etc.

The alpines on the other hand are a few points shy of meeting blizzaks performance in the snow but has less noise and thread wear is fairly marginal

Most of my reserach has been found on articles at www.tirerack.com

But thats all i really know as for now

4wheeldrift
09-08-2002, 04:14 PM
The alpins will wear a lot better than the blizzaks will. The blizzak uses a high silicon content tread compound, which is what gives it its good ice performance. Unfortunately, this makes the compound quite soft so it will wear REALLY fast on dry pavement. Worthy of note is the fact that after the blizzaks hit about 65% of tread depth, they are normal compound underneath and act like a regular all season at that point. The alpins are using a more conventional compound that doesn't wear as fast. Nokian uses a silicon compound, but it doesn't seem to wear quite as fast as the blizzaks, but stilll wears faster than the alpins. For this part of the country, unless you are on the highway alot you are probably going to want to go for more of an ice tire than a snow tire. And when it comes down to it, even a set of $30 a corner walmart el-cheapo snow tires is superior to most all seasons in terms of snow and ice performance.

max_boost
09-08-2002, 09:15 PM
The weather in Calgary changes all the time. I definitely need a tire that will have longer tread life. I guess Arctic Aplines it is!

Ekliptix
09-08-2002, 09:17 PM
that's good for me. If this is a go, we should start another thread w/ people's names who are in w/ the desired tire size beside their names.

i've been thinking about this group buy

i think its gonna be hard to set up because everyone has their own size they need
unless we get a set size i think its gonna be hard to go thru.

I really don't know
anything is possible and it never hurts to try
just my 2 cents

So I just called Kal-Tire on Edmonton Trail. Talked to Scott.

For Arctic Alpine's, 205/60/15, comes to 620.09 includes mounting balancing and gst

He said they are happy to give discounts for groups but need a number of people first. He was reluctant to give any kind of set-prices yet.

Everyone call whatever shops you can and try to get info, then when we got more people, we have a list of stores and we can choose the best price.

szw
09-10-2002, 07:38 PM
Come on guys, nobody's organizing this yet, call whoever you can and find out prices and who is willing to wheel and deal.

max_boost
09-10-2002, 10:50 PM
there is too much work to organize something like this

if no one is willing, I guess we will go our separate ways and buy our own

szw
09-10-2002, 10:59 PM
Well even if we have a small number, we can go ask kal-tire what they can do for us. Probably not much, but at least something right?

Anyways the quote 620 everything included sounded pretty cheap, compared to what I have read in another forum. Not sure if it was a sale or not

Well I am supposed to go to Kal-tire to get our discount prices within the week, give us some prices for the above sizes and then we'll compare them! You can probably give us a better deal than Kal-tire, but I gotta check'em and see what they're giving anyways.

They said probably around 15-20% would be no problem, but they want the tire sizes first so they can rattle off some quotes.

Thanks Rob

My name is Sean btw.

Hey Rob,

What would be a good size for winter tires, downgrading from stock 215/45/17 Bridgestone RE040's? I'm looking at 15", possibly 16" if that's any better.

Those Hankook W400's you hooked me up with last year were awesome, so I'll probably want those again this time.

Thanks!

I talked to Kal-tire today(s.e. location). Our company has an account with them. For a set of 205/50/16 Alpines, it would cost me a total of $770(gst, mount and balance). Wasn't much of a deal, that was the price if i were able to get 5 people in on the buy. He said if i was able to get 5 people he would knock off $5 per tire(whoopee!)

szw
09-13-2002, 06:23 PM
Okay I've got the ball rolling...

Kal-Tire in the NE...

These are the prices for 205/60/15

Regular price 673.46
5-9 sets 573.43
10-14 sets 542.23

He said all sizes would be the same amount of discount. I'm not sure whether he means the $$ amount, or the percentage amount. I will email him and ask.

I will also check on prices 15-19, and more...since right now I have a list 16 people.

Those prices are for EVERYTHING including GST and balance, mounting., I'm gonna try to get GST taken off, can you guys pay cash?

I'll update soon with more info!!

I'll be fine in paying cash. Let us know on the progress:thumbsup:

Also, I live kinda far from North and South Costco..could someone go there and ask the tire-shop about a group=deal? Ask to speak to the manager, they have more authority.

You can use my tire size and above quotes to get their quotes and discounts.

Thanks

BIG UPDATE:

screw the Group buy!

Costco has better prices on my size tire (should be the same for all sizes too). The reg. price is $560, for october 11th--nov XX, there is $50 off.

They said they don't do group deals, since they already have people buying crates of tires from them.

So I am out of the group buy guys! The only bad thing is that you must have a costco membership to buy the tires. If you want to organize the group buy still, you can have roughly the same prices if everyone stays in the group buy.

Whoever wants to organize it now, talk to Scott Kershaw at Kal-Tire on Edmonton Trail. He knows whats going on, all you gotta do is get deposits from everyone, go into the store and order everyones tire-sizes.
With the number of deposits, he will know how much discount to give each order, then people can get them installed whenever they have time.

Its not difficult, most of the people are already interested. Theres a few sets waiting to be bought at albertacars too....

Good luck guys!

For Michellin Arctic Alpine, I think canadian tire is selling it for 133 each, which is about 7 dollars cheaper than costco (costco sells for 140)~ regardless to group buy or not.

really???

What's the tire size?, because when I phoned, I was looking for 215/60/15, and the tech @ costco told me it was about 140 each... :banghead:
which I think was quite expansive.....anyway, maybe it is better for me to go down to costco, and check out the price in person.

Yeah go check them out..
Costco was 140 each tire, total comes to 560...they said starting oct 11 they have a 50 dollar discount if you buy all four. so the price comes to 510.
Anyways, that price includes everything you need to get them mounted balanced (not installed on car, and not sure if tax included in that or not)

I asked canadian tire for the total price with mounting tire tax etc etc....it came out to be more.

Anyways I could have had a dumbass on the phone at cnd tire, check both of them out again. haha

Oh and 195/60/15 was my size too

sml
10-19-2002, 10:14 PM
I've checked prices for 195/65/15 Michelins Alpins and it's $500 every incl at Costco till Nov3. At Crappy Tires, it's $600. Blizzaks are $650 (not on sale) at Blaskin and Lane. I know Blizaaks are the best snow tires out there, but can't justify the $150 difference to not get the Michelins instead...

szw
10-19-2002, 10:30 PM
I've heard blizzaks are awesome until they start to wear, then they lose a lot more traction...rather than michelins which are good all the way through.

I can't confirm it though...my brother-in-law just got blizzaks, I want to test them out next snowfall

sml
10-19-2002, 10:39 PM
I have Blizaaks on the lude... 195/60/15s, but they're the old ws15s, they are AMAZING!!! But at 50% tread, they turn into all season compound. But their new WS50 tires have the same sticky stuff till 50% tread, then they turn into regular winter tires (moto master quality)... Personally I'd rather have the best of the best for a short time than the second best for longer time. But you're right, they wear out FAST! Hoping to get 2 winters out of them, possibly 3... If you're lazy in changing from winter back to summers when the weather warms up above 0C, then Alpins are the way to go cause they're less sticky, therefore doesn't wear out as fast...

$770 for a set of Yokohama AVS Winter

$900 for a set of Bridgestone LM-22's?? (forgot the name)

I remember them saying that Michelin is giving free tire rotation and balancing.

No connections here really. Maybe see what kind of price rob can get you. Or go talk to bashir at the kal tire on 42nd and see what he says. I know he gives deals to CSCC members, maybe he can hook you up with something. $559 for a set of blizzaks in that size is a pretty dang good price though. I'm just wondering, do you have to get a different tire size for the rears? It might be more beneficial if you get the same tire size all around so you can rotate your tires to get even wear and make them last longer.......but if tread life doesn't matter, you can buy a new set every winter! hehe:tongue:

The blizzaks use a very high silicon tread compound for the first layers of rubber. The silicon basically acts as little suction cups to grip ice in conjunction with the siping of the tread pattern. However, the silicon compound tread will wear incredibly quickly once the weather gets warm and you're driving on bare pavement. Its extremely soft so it will wear like an R compound until you get down to the normal compound underneath, at around 50% wear. At this point the tire becomes a normal M+S rated tire like any other all season and you lose some of the benefits, though its still a better than passable tire for snow.

They're not the cheapest tires out there, but its $600 for snow tires against $35k for the car. Cheap insurance to my mind. In that size, unless you look at really cheap (I'm talking like walmart elcheapos here) you're not gonna find a price much lower than that. I paid $540 out the door for studded hakkas in that size, and I think the alpins were only $5 or $10 a tire cheaper in that size. But that said, just about any snow tire is an improvement in performance over most all (no) season tires.

Only true for the ORGINAL Blizaaks (ws-15), the gen 2 Blizaaks (WS-50) are regualr snow tires below 50% wear...

I'm looking for a set of 195/65/15, got quoted $559 for a set of Blizzakks, mounted.balanced, tax in at Sears Auto......

That's the best price I've seen on Blizaaks... I say go for it! The other place that I know sells it is Blaskin and Lane and they're quoting me $650 for 195/65/15...

I need it mostly for city driving but I go to Banff once a month so I will be going on the highway. I want a set of tires that I can drive like it's summer...hehe:D . I really don't care how long they last me. Thanks for the help!

If you want to drive in the winter like it's summer, then go with the Nokian Hakkas... All the rally cars use them to race in the snow! Should be ok for you!

I remember them saying that Michelin is giving free tire rotation and balancing.

Kaltire have a special this week or maybe till next week that if you buy 4 tires from them, you get free install, mounting, balance, etc... But it doesn't include tire tax ($4/tire) and GST...

yeah, I got mine at costco as well, it isn't that bad of a deal.
708 for all four + tax. (under 800) and the size was 205/60/15
I think costco is cheap in comparison to blaskin & lane, and canadian tire.
but I had to get the ugly black rim elsewhere (from walmart), so....

At least, I am set for the winter to come. (hopefully the weather isn't as bad as before)

Are the Bridgestone LM-22's ... Blizaaks?
Are the Nokian Hakaas more expensive?

If warm weather is not good for the Blizaaks...then that is not good for Calgary since the weather changes so much and it is freezing cold in one moment and warm in the next moment?

And I just talked to my dad. He doesn't want me to wait until the end of the week to buy the tires. I have to buy them tomorrow ASAP.

So which ones should I get then?

I think we should go buy them together and try to get a deal! hehe

If I could do it all over, I would buy blizzaks and swap em on when theres snow, and take em off when teh weather is clear but too late, already own a set of pirelli wintersports which I might add are pretty darn good in the winter. Tried to get the Alpins last winter, but they were sold out in my size... damn big brakes.

If you want superior grip and wanna drive like its summer, get the blizzaks!

Hakkas are generally cheaper than blizzaks in most sizes. Kal Tire usually stocks the most popular sizes, and they can order in other available sizes. Its entirely up to you as to which you pick. I've got Nokians and I just love them, fantastic tires. The Hakka 1 is a pure snowtire, where the Hakka Q is an ice tire. Its tough to go wrong with the blizzaks, the only downside is they'll wear pretty fast on normal pavement.

The Blizzak LM 22s are a high performance winter tire. They are pretty hard compared to the Blizzak WS. You wouldn't have to worry about burning them up in the dry. Since this is a El Nino winter, expect a lot of dry conditions for sure. I have them on and they seem to work good in the snow/ice and pretty good in the dry too.

Define "High Performance Winter Tire"? If they are really hard compound, that makes them the exact opposite of what you want for maximum grip on snow and ice. The WS is an ice tire, so the compound is even softer to maximize usable grip on ice.

High performance winter tire means better than all season tires, but not as good as "regular" winter tires. If you're planning to go "high performance" in the winter, I suggest you go buy a hummer. For everyone else, we'll just get "regular" winter tires to save our butts in snowy and icy conditions... But you're right about the dry performance, but then again isn't that what my summer tires are for??? :dunno:

Why label them as "high performance" if its worse than a "normal" snow tire? I don't want snow tires that are only marginally better than a normal set of no season tires. Completely defeats the purpose. And as for "high performance", I don't need a hummer because I've got a subaru :D And yes thats my car.

Ok, I'm confused with this high performance snow tire concept, does this mean his car handles well while keep the grip on ice/snow?

Tell me something about these Blizzaks WS50 I have, it hasn't snow so I don't know how well they perform but handling wise, they suck......but its ok, I don't speed or do anything exciting on the roads anyway

I've never heard of a high performance snow tire before, and sml's description seems rather counter-intuitive.

Just learn to live with it, they won't ever grip as well as a Z rated tire on dry pavement because of it, but they'll work exceptionally well on snow and ice. Just have to get all the fun driving out of the way before winter comes I guess :burnout:

This is what was explained to me at costco..

Arctic alpines...best overall winter tire you can get now (cost/wear/grip)

Pilot alpines...high performance winter tire...everything that the arctic alpine has, but has a higher speed rating, and better handling.

I'm not sure about the better handling part, I think he just threw that in. I think its basically the speed rating.
