for the LS, the are phenomenally reliable. Watch out for power steering pumps which are a weak point at the high pressure hose.

Try to get one that is a 98+ plus, the body style + Engine upgrade is well worth the price as the older ones are starting to look a bit dated.

Dash Cluster/Heater/CD LED and LCD panels go out and are somewhat expensive to replace. These were also more or less fixed in later models.

Some more advice:

He asked "... what to look for?" so "something else" should adequately satisfy that question.

The LS400 is a amazing reliable car. they just keep on going and they run quite smoothly. The one I have is great but I have no need for it. but its a very smooth driving car.

You looking for a first gen or second gen GS?

I have a friend selling his 147 out in Vancouver for fairly cheap. I was selling my 147, but ended up starting a 1000+whp engine build for it, so i'm probably not going to let that one go unless I get some decent coin for it.

LS 400's are great. typical issues like Neil mentioned, LCD screens go black, you can usually get them replaced and with better screens and lifetime warranty for around $150. They also have an issue with an idle up valve on the power steering pump leaking p/s fluid into your intake manifold, you'll notice some of them have white smoke on startup.

If you're interested in a UCF11, I'm thinking about selling my 91 Toyota Celsior CF Package, Junction Produce Premium widebody kit, 19x10 / 19x13 Weds Kranze Cerebus II wheels, exhaust, Focal sound system. Massaging and reclining rear seats, with limo controls in the rear... LMK if you're interested.
