Say you drive a twin turbo car like a r32 gtr, soarer, Z32 etc. How bad would it be to use 87 octance or 89 octance.

not sure how complex the anti-detonation systems are on those cars but on a lot of cars the ecu would just pull a heck of a lot of timing and you'd get reduced power. That is unless you've cranked up the boost a ton or something and the fuel/spark curves can not be adjusted enough to compensate. In that case you could get pinging which results in very high combustion pressures/temps and internal damage is likely if prolonged

I drive a vr6 although it isn't turbo it requires 91+ octane. If I run it on 87 (I have never personally done this) it just loses a lot of power due to what I have described above.

Just follow what the manual says and don't cheap out. If it says it takes premium, it is because the car is tuned to run premium. Running the wrong fuel will make the car lose power and potentially damage your engine over time.

I always put premium in my car I was just wondering what the overall effect would be.

It could be as little as pulled ECU timing and less power, or as bad as a blown up motor

Not in all cars. It's safe to run less than what manual says in typical naturally aspirated cars at high altitudes (wouldn't apply to OP)

True, but generally speaking is what I meant.

To put things into perspective, I'm visiting family in Yellowknife right now and it's 116.9 for 89 octane.

Nothing like a trip north to make me feel better about paying for 94 octane in Calgary... Especially since it costs less than their regular.

Wow, that's freaking cheap, I used to live up there, and remember gas prices being insanely high compared to the rest of the country (or I should say I remember my parents talking about it, as I was just a kid).

Premium on Vancouver Island was 1.29 the week before Xmas :nut:

haha, sounds like Kelowna, 116.9 for reg, 129.9 for 94 right now. The price you pay for living in a tourist trap.

I'd sooner live in Kelowna the tourist trap than this shithole city any day of the week. I have a buddy that lives in West Kelowna near the Shannon Lake golf course, beautiful house, beautiful community, I'll move to K-town just as soon as I find a decent paying automotive related job.

If it's like my old car running regular will cost you more due to decreased mpg. I lost 80-100k less per tank running regular.
