I'm looking for 2005-ish Audi A4...anything I should be on the lookout for in terms not buying a lemon?

I would look for maintenance records and see if the wear items have been replaced - timing belt, brakes etc.
Also i've heard that cail packs were a common failure for these cars so i would check if they have been replaced by the previous owner. Lots of good info on audiforums

These things have sensors for everything so you'll likely pull a cel as you pull away from the dealership.

Coil packs have a recall on them now, so free replacement for the old shitty type.

And then leak some coolant as you park in your garage.

Ah man, this sucks...I have a tough choice right now...go with an older luxury vehicle and deal with the headaches of potential repairs like I do now with my Murano OR get a brand new economy class car such as the 2011 Elantra or Mazda 3.......

Most new cars come with features you could only get on luxury cars. Back 5 years ago bluetooth, HID's, heated seats and a 6-speed transmission wouldn't have exist on a hyundai, now you can get all that for <30k. Luxury cars are only luxury when new, after 5 or ten years they are old technology, repairs stack up and their wealthy owners have moved onto something better.

Why not compromise and get a lightly used 2008-2010 and ditch it after warranty runs out?

Went with a 2007 Lexus IS250 AWD instead ..it's got 113,000 km on it and the warranty only covers up to 120,000 but I figure it's my best bet for realiablity on an older luxury vehicle (*KNOCK ON WOOD*)...Alberta car no accidents bought from Acura dealership for $23,000...pretty happy since they gave me the high end BB value on trade in for my Murano, it was about to break down again as I pulled into the lot lol (throttle issues)...it was in pretty rough shape overall.
