Was out on Vancouver Island for Christmas. Had some fun with my new Lee Big Stopper:

I really want them to make a big stopper for the 14-24 filter holder, but apparently flare is a big issue. I really like the first one.

davidI

Cool effect in that second photo. For us uneducated, what is a 'big stopper' and how did you make that effect? I'm assuming it was a single exposure in camera and not photoshopped...

Go4Long
01-02-2011, 09:16 PM
a big stopper is a 10 Stop ND filter made by lee filters...so just makes for some really long shutter speeds.

davidI
01-02-2011, 09:59 PM
Cool. I've been using my polarizing filter for longer exposures but that look much better!

blitz

Yup, the Lee is the nicest because it's a square filter system so it just clips on and off the lens. You can get B+W 10 stop circular ND's but it's a hassle screwing it on and off.

With a 10 stop filter on, you literally cannot see through the viewfinder. Sometimes Liveview works with the brightness cranked up, but it's still difficult.

B+W has a 6 stop filter which is a good compromise. Liveview can see through it and it still lets you get 5-10 second exposures in daylight.

That second picture was a 68 second exposure. Start exposure, run over and sit on bench, wait for stopwatch to beep, run back and stop exposure. So I turned out a little transparent.

davidI

What aperture were you using? 68 seconds almost seems fast but I guess the sky was probably brighter than it looks in the photos since they're B&W.

They were both at F8. Depending on what browser you use, you should get either Opanda iExif or a similar plug in and as long as the information is there, it will display the settings the picture was taken at. The one I have for Chrome, I simply roll my mouse over the picture and it displays the exif information.

was the water even remotely calm on the first shot or no? just wondering just how effective it is at smoothing it out...I could stack two three stop filters on the 14-24 and get an "ok" result...

Thanks for the tip on the EXIF data.

So what would be the difference between taking this photo at F8 with the ND filter vs. at F30 without? DOF?

DOF and the fact that diffraction kicks in after about F11 on most cameras, so the image would be pretty soft at the really tiny apertures.

My Singh-Ray filter goes from 2-8 stops, its quite handy if you don't want to pack around a bunch of different filters.

And that filter cost just as much as my entire Lee kit including holder, 77mm wide angle adapter, 4mm 2 Stop glass GND and the Big stopper. Nice, but not a great value IMO.

Go4Long, on the 1st shot the water wasn't calm, but not exactly rough. Here's an example just around the corner from the 1st one. 50 second exposure.

Aren't those 14-24mm filters insanely expensive? I hate to think of the cost of stacking a few. That's the reason I went with the 16-35mm, I use filters a lot so as sexy as the 14-24mm is it just didn't work for me.

Go4Long
01-03-2011, 10:25 AM
I guess it depends on how you classify insanely expensive...lol

I happen to have an amazing wife that bought me the holder for Christmas, which was crazy since I had only mentioned that I was getting it once, and really I'm just impressed that she managed to figure out what lens I was shooting with and find it for a good deal (although she enlisted the help of one of my friends).

The filter holder is $375 US from B&H, and the filters are $120 each also from B&H...locally the holder is $650 at TCS and the filters are $200 each. The real problem is that the filters are facing big supply issues so everyone is saying between 6 and 12 weeks, which is shitty.

blitz
01-03-2011, 11:17 AM
That is a nice wife!

$120 isn't too bad. The big stopper cost me $150 ish and I had to wait about 4 months for it. At least you'd have them for spring...

Well what happen was I purchased the regular 'thick' version first, took it to Hawaii with me and noticed the edge was casting a shadow on wide angle shots.

So when I got back I took it back to the Camerastore and told him what was happening, he told me the original guy who sold it to me should have mentioned this, but neglected to.

So I decided to buy the 'thin' version and by luck it was listed for less then what I originally bought the 'thick' version for, so I ended up getting a credit.

The 'thick' version at the time was around $320 or something like that.

Thats a really good deal for around $300 IMO. I'd have bought one too at that price.

#2 as well. I think the extra light / blue light of the building adds to it. Especially the upper floors.

Go4Long
01-24-2011, 06:45 PM
the tigers are cruising, the red panda juveniles are pretty active, everything else kinda depends on the day from what I've heard...the hippos were actually wandering around the other day (inside of course) which was interesting since every time I've ever been there they were being big lazy asses.

Sorry for quoting something a ways back but damn when I seen this I immediately remembered something that Robert Berdan did (I met the guy once and checked out his website). Same mountain range and everything. Great shot btw, just thought it was neat!
