I was thinking about putting together a little stock picking contest for the year. It would give other investors on the site some investment ideas and insights to where people are putting their money. Not sure how many people are gonna participate, but I thought I would see if there is any interest.

Here is what I am thinking for the rules:
1)Pick Three stocks
2)No Warrants, options, or futures
3)Must be traded on North American exchanges
4)Physical commodities can be selected as well
5)No duplicate picks if one memeber has selected a stock before you then move on to your next favorite

Lets say that picks must be entered by January 9th. Cost basis will be as of market close on January 7th. Now I don't really have any prizes to give away, so it would be more of a bragging competition I guess. I will update the thread on everyone's picks and gains at least once a month.

If there is no Interest mods please delete.

I will start.

1) Gasfrac Eneregy Services. GFS-V
2) Resverlogix. RVX-T
3) Americas Petrogas. BOE-V

DUBBED

1) MGO.T
2) GOD.V
3) NRG.V

I am currently invested in one of these, will be dumping some cash into others soon.

I heard a lot of states are allowing more gambling within the states to increase revenues? Not sure if it's true or not...but that could certainly carry over to reduced playing in Vegas.

Oh man. A guy I know has made so much money off this stock it's ridiculous. I didn't even believe him until I saw his transaction summaries.

Basically was day trading it from $6 to $25. This was 6 months ago so haven't talked to him since.

The kicker? He was buying $300,000 worth of the stock. LOL

Whoa lots of Silvermex Resources holders in here, Silvermex basically covered my costs of first year of school and much needed car work since I bought in around the .20s during the GGC period and sold in the .90s as SLX, feels good man.

I mean there are so many junior companies listed on the venture how did you fall on the one you picked?

I'll be the first to admit that Southern Arc (SA) I found on another website about hot stock picks!

PBR I saw mentioned on a blog. HEM I found by searching for agriculture stocks. NWE I found by browsing through energy penny stocks on Google Finance.

Sucks for me that we're using the 7th as the start date.
Using the 3rd when I made the picks...
HEM +34.6% (vs. -6.7% since the 7th)
NWE +33.3% (vs. 20%)
PBR +0.4% (vs. 3.3%)

Hopefully the rest of the year goes this well...

Troyl,
That CLM was a great one wasn't it. I jumped out on the 14th before funds got tied up in the purchase. Made a nice tidy 30% return. :)

Magia,
I'm not good personally at stocks, so I hired someone at TD Waterhouse who's job it is to do this. My father in law has been using him for quite some time, and had done quite well. So I migrated my stuff over to him from the monkey outfit I was using before for my RRSP's. I'd love to refer people to him, but he's pretty busy so he and his team are only accepting accounts over 100k, (or family referrals).

I'd be quite happy to keep feeding stuff from him here though.

Maybe you guys should also keep track of absolute gains since the date of their pick...

It's the same story when you say someone has made 100% gain on $1000 as opposed to a 10% gain on $10,000.

Unless that same person would be willing to put $10k on that penny stock bet. Buying power should be relative methinks!

I don't know its hard to explain, surely someone knows what I'm getting at. :)

It is true. You can buy and sell options in your TFSA.

Just double checked, I have full margin/short with in my TFSA with TD Active Trader.

Short order was just submitted OK, where as it is rejected as 'No Premissioned' from my registered accounts.

I been in SDVI for around 2 1/2 years. This year is going to be amazing. One of the best penny stocks right now.

Lots of DD here http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/board.aspx?board_id=6837 But you will need to create an account (well worth it though if you do US stocks).

so from lesst then 1/4 of a penny to something good? That webpage doesn't seem very promising, read some news reports, might look more into it. we will see

Investorhub in general is just like a forum. Been on it for a while and pretty damn good. Some pretty smart people on it. You can find just about every stock there. Some people do a lot of DD so a good place to go, but always do your own DD.

I've heard Questrade is really good. Use the search function, there was a thread on which brokerage to use months ago.

I just started with Questrade - Easy to trade and cheap.

Customer service is horrible - expect approx 2 weeks to set up an account

I cant remember if someone was talking about AMB.TO but news release they are being pulled off the TSX effective Mar 4

EFG.V - First Gold Exploration. They're into REEs not gold so they need a name change. Could be big but it trades weirdly. 5 good NRs positive news results, resources on the ground and it's at a lower price than 3 months ago. :dunno:

CMM.V has gone up 29.41% since Jan 7 for me. :)

EFG.V (now CRE.V) is a bit lower.

No kidding, their customer service lately has been subpar. They have recently changed everybody's account numbers, and I’m sure they are swamped with questions about this. They say the new system will be much better.

Put in my name as a referral if any beyonders decide to sign up "shaun". I think I get some kind of kick back.

anyone have any opinions on SNRS.PK

Sunrise Consulting Group.

They are in full production on making solar powered chargers for smartphones and GPS.

They have signed with apple and are working on TOMTOM Garmin etc..

I bought 300$ worth of stock, it got me something like 1.5 million shares. I hope it does what sirus radio did when they were a penny stock.

I just opened an self directed RRSP account on Sunday (Feb 27th) and funded the account and completed the application and ready to trade today (Mar 1)... but that's just my experience.

I am new to this as well and have no idea what I am doing. Should I just pay around with trading a few stocks and see what happens (pay my dues so to speak)? Or do you guys have any advice for me?

Yes I believe most of the PK stocks are OTC. So basically you have to call in to wherever you set up your investing account and get them to order the stocks. Its very irritating as sometimes there hard to get a hold of.

Stay away from Questrade, they are crap. For the 'money saved' it's not worth the aggravation of their entire system going down (no trades!), misplaced cheques (!), horrible even rude customer service.

I trade with TD and Cibc.

I haven't had any real problems with Questrade's customer service. Never had to wait more than 24 hours for them to do something or respond. It's not the most stable platform, and definitely not a good one for day trading where timing is key. The new myQuestrade is definitely an improvement, even with the few hiccups that came with implementing it.

It'd be wiser to make use of the free 30-day trial account they offer where you play around with fake money. It'll familiarize you with some of the terms, charts, values and other such things.

In the meantime you could dump your real money into something fairly safe like XIU, which is a good one to hold long-term.

Not really sure on a target, lots of hype in the stock now. Pretty much skys the limit on this one. Lots of recent discussion and talks, in the NE USA, of banning typical hydraulic fracturing as they are finding contaminates in the water. Along with large amount of contaminated water that must be disposed of which is a by-product of typical fracking.

This is all great news for GFS. I wouldnt be surprised to see someone possibly snap them up. Do some DD yourself to see the potential here. I am not selling here should see 18+ in the coming months, if they keep proving themselves and avoid any more "incidents."

Then again this is the stockmarket and we could go back to $5 in a heartbeat, only wager what you can loose. Maybe we will get a TSX listing soon???

That was my stock pick. But I was watching them from $0.015, then watched them climb to $0.19 and now die. I never did buy any shares of it though, just watched it.
