Talk about an expensive cigarette.

A Calgary couple were removed from a Sunwing Vacations flight in Cuba on Thursday after a man lit up in the plane’s washroom.

Terry McFawn and Linda Keys were on board Flight 737 in Veradero when the plane was delayed due to weather, said Daryl McWilliams, vice-president of sales and marketing for Sunwing Travel Group.

Several passengers had asked the flight crew if they could step off the aircraft to have a cigarette and when they were refused, McWiliams said McFawn tried sneaking a quick smoke in the washroom.

“The captain was informed Mr. McFawn had been smoking, which is of course against the law,” he said.

“It’s against international law, aviation law, you name it so the captain decided to have him deplaned.

“He argued vociferously and I gather some bad language was exchanged with the cabin staff.

“The couple were escorted from the aircraft by Cuban immigration officers and their luggage was unloaded from the plane,” said McWilliams.

The removal meant the couple had to pay for another flight home, he added.

“They went to a local hotel, paid for a room, stayed there and came back the next day and paid for seats on our flight to Toronto, then presumably they had to pay to get from Toronto to Calgary.

“It was an expensive cigarette,” said McWilliams.

This was the first time passengers have been removed for smoking on a Sunwing flight, said McWilliams, and the company won’t pursue further charges.

“We think they’ve been punished enough,” he said. “One-way fares are expensive.”

Nice lol..

He deserved it if they can't resist the urge. What makes him think people won't know he smoked in a plane?

Poor girl. Wonder if she was pissed at the guy lol.

You think when taking long international flights like this people would just bring a box of Nicotine gum with them.

I'm assuming since far east of Canada = newfies, that makes the middle east most of ontario & quebec.

Going further, I think there is some racism at work here as well.. by using the term "middle east" to describe people from TO, he wants to draw a parallel to the actual middle east and the people that come from there just in case anyone has something against brown people

Pretty lame reference to begin with, but the couple were actually from Calgary and not from TO.

Air Transat offers direct flights from here to Varadero - I guess they werent able to book that one.

And I wonder how much of the foul language used by the smoker contributed to their situation.... had they been apologetic instead of belligerent.... who knows.

I know people that were at the same resort and on the same flight as him. They said he was being loud and obnoxious even before everyone boarded the plane. Once they anounced the plane was going to be late he had a little tantrum on the plane and went into the bathroom to have a smoke... hehehe the news story pretty much sums up the rest.

I think he's implying they buy their cars from the East and hence have a lot of rust issues with them.

reason # 2452 of why Im glad I dont smoke.

It boggles my mind people pay hard earned cash, to stand outside in weather like what we now have; to feed their addiction. Only to wake up and feel like shit, and be out of energy.

Yet people pay to do that? sad times are these.....

They also think its ok to find other means of shelter to smoke, such as the local carwash. Seems everytime i go there somebodys washing their car smoking away, the humidity in the wash seems to amplify the stink x 100.....ICK!!!:thumbsdow
