Detroit, Michigan - Designed to be a practical and affordable driver's car, the lightweight Dodge Sling Shot concept car features a rear-mounted 100 horsepower 3 cylinder engine that offers good fuel economy (up to 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres) and reasonable performance (0 to 60 mph in ten seconds). A five-speed gearbox, rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes contribute to the Sling Shot's driver-oriented characteristics.

For open air driving, a removeable roof panel and side rails store in the trunk, and a sliding canvas roof panel can slide back out of the way like a roll-top desk.

The interior design was influenced by performance engine parts - the gauges for example resemble cogs and belts.

“Sling Shot is a dynamic, creative look at the never-ending quest to offer visually exciting design, structural integrity, operating efficiency and the all-important fun-to-drive quotient in an affordable, entry level sports car,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President - Chrysler Group Design.

I posted about the concept in the General forum.

http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32220

Its essentially a re-wrapped Smart Roadster (smart is one of the Daimler Chrysler companies and they sell tiny fuel efficient cars mainly in europe). This car looks like a lot of fun. Do you know if that's a concept model, or a production prototype?

Looks sweet. Like an RX8 hatch almost...

But 100HP - 3 cylinder engine? I wonder if you'd get passed by buses in the city if you drove one of those...

I like it, it has an M Z3 Coupe/S2000 look. Looks fun to drive.

You are probably over estimating the size of the car. Have you seen the MB A - class? This is a similar size, so 100HP will make it move pretty good - not going to set any records but it shouldn't be a slouch either with its light weight. This might be one of the few vehicles where a performance mod could be "going on a diet" lol

PS I'd be interested to find out if there would be enough room to swap in the 2.4L - i doubt there'd be enough airflow to allow a Turbo 2.4, but if it was possible...

Its still not my Pronto Spyder that I want, but its the closest I'll get:

I can't find that info, but its small.

Have a look at the UK smart website, and look at the smart roadster since that is what the car is based on:
http://www.thesmart.co.uk/

But yeah its small. Very small.

Brabus -

Brabus created ten smart roadster-coupés with higher power and higher torque engines that took part in the celebration rally to mark "100 years of the Solitude race" in July of 2003. Two standard three-cylinders were joined to create a v6 bi-turbo with 1,396 cc engine capacity, power output of 125 kW (170 bhp) and torque of 220 Newton metres (162 lb-ft).

These prototypes are proof of the achievement potential and versatility of the production car concept. The bi-turbo engines serve to demonstrate the technology and underline the sporty handling performance of the smart roadster and roadster-coupé. The cars painted in flame red have a power/weight ratio of just 4.9 kilogrammes per bhp, accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in less than 6 seconds and reach a top speed of more than 220 kilometres per hour (136 mph).

The smart roadster-coupé v6 bi-turbos are the result of cooperation between smart, Mercedes-Benz and smart-BRABUS GmbH. The engines of the prototypes were developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz, and smart-BRABUS GmbH assembled the limited series in Bottrop. The cars are not licensed for road use and they have not been developed for series production. They have been developed purely as prototypes for the racetrack to demonstrate the potential of the smart roadster and the smart brand as a whole.

Legendary racing drivers of the 50s and 60s such as the former silver arrow pilot Hans Herrmann sat behind the wheel of the ten smart roadster-coupé v6 bi-turbos during their first races at the Solitude revival rally in July, and well-known names today also took part, for example Formula 1 test driver Alexander Wurz from the McLaren-Mercedes team and Formula 3 pilots including Markus Winkelhock.
