Calgary used to have one and it was incredibly popular. My family and I used to go every weekend before the hub oil fire ruined it. I'd love to see someone rebuild it though (19,F)

i used to go to the drive in occasionally when i lived in winnipeg... but believe it or not... the summers are warmer and longer than in Calgary

It did, up until a few years ago when a giant oil fire happened, and it had been there since my parents were kids

I would love to see a drive in movie theater open back up in calgary, distance wouldn't really be an issue, I'm sure I put on more km's just lookin for races on the weekends... I mean, if I was to go looking for races I would be putting on more km's...

no, cineplex was gonna shut the drive-in down anyways. The cineplex land is not contaminated. There is a Rona distrobution warehouse there now. The only reason the Hub site is still being remediated is because of the land fill near by.

I think a drive in movie theater would rock. How do you get the sound? Is there like a local FM station? As long as prices weren't rediculous like in the big ticket theaters, I'd be in. I've stopped going to theaters because I figure if I'm going to spend 26 dollars just to get myself and my girlfriend through the door, I might as well just wait 3 months and buy the DVD for the same price.

I would love for it to come back.. I went a few times when I was younger, and it was fairly well priced too... We should start a petition to have one open up again... (22/M)

I went several times. They should make one with 1 or 2 screens, and rotate the movies or something rather than try and compete with the big multiplexes.

I liked going to the one in Calgary before Hub Oil. But everytime I went the goddamn mosquitoes were brutal!!! I couldn't have my windows open long, just enough to get a gulp of fresh air then closed again. Maybe it was just me!?

i love them there was one on Edmonton trail a long ass time ago and they just took the screen down a couple of years ago. Sunrise drive in i think it was called. I think it would be popular especially with all the " new age hot rodders" it would be like going to the movies and a car show at the same time.:D

Nah, I don't think I would go unles it was for a special reason, like a car show/movie. I rather see a movie in a theatre with surroundsound and more comfartable seats.

Plus I'm old enough now that I have my own place so I don't have to fool around with my girl in the back seat. :thumbsdow (28 - M)

Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't the old Cineplex Odeon drive in theater close way before the Hub Oil fire? As far as I can remember, that was the case.

It actually re-opened after the hub oil blast. I believe the blast was in 96? and I watched a few movies there in 98/99

Anyway, drive-ins are awesome! Go with a few buddies, smoke up, drink, chill, good times haha

yea thats what i remember, that was huge fire, dont they have one in airdree or red deer or something, i'm pretty sure that theres one not that far out of town, but i dont feel like going out of town just to go to a drive in, it would be better if they rebuild one here in calgary. 18/m

Love the drive-in, great times, cheap prices, and you can take your own snacks/drinks in too, so you don't have pay like $6 for a frigging coke.

But for the big movies (i.e.) LOTR I would still pay the money to see it in the theatre with surround sound and such.

I vote for both!

The idea of rebuilding a drive in sounds like a good idea. It would be so much more comfortable just reclined back in your seat and so much quieter too. You wouldn't have immature kids laughing at the wrong parts of the movie and people kicking the back of your seat constantly.

That was the immidaiate reason, but it was shutting down in a matter of weeks anyways. It had been on the chopping block for a while.

The fire blackened all the screens enough the would have to be rebuilt and because they were closeing anyway they just said fk it and ended it right then

I enjoyed going to the drive in. One overlooked aspect of the drive in is that you don't need a babysitter to see a movie. Just bring some blankets and let the little one sleep for a while in the back seat.

It's actually in Redcliff, but close enough. ;)
I think thats the only one left in Alberta.
I go there every year, just because its a 10min drive, it's pretty good there, don't have to pay for the overpriced food and drinks, just brink your own.

I would love to see another drive in open in Calgary, especially since I've got such a nice stereo in the car. As well as having some privacy and just for something to do on a warm summer night. I recentl;y went to one in Vancouver(Surrey or Cloverdale) and I was just thinking how great it would be to have one in Calgary again. (m/21)

Cineplex was doing very well with their outdoors, but wanted out and only kept them open because they were so new, many built in the 70's. The oil fire was a complete cop-out, they argued successfully that it "ruined" the place and undoubtedly collected a large insurance policy for the entire place + lost business, then sold the land, sweet deal. Did you know that Edmonton was once the drive-in capital of the world, with the most per capita despite very late sunsets there. It would cost you a million bucks or more to get a screen up anywhere near Calgary. Redcliff, there's one in Libby Montana, a bunch in Sask. and probably Enderbey BC are your closest options.
