A 22-year old man from Rocky Mountain House is in jail after leading the RCMP and Calgary City Police on a high speed chase that including the driver narrowly missing an RCMP officer.

Around 10:30 a.m. onTuesday the Strathmore RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle clocked travelling through the town of Strathmore on Highway #1 at approximately 150 kmh, 90 kmh over the posted speed limit. The westbound driver fled from the police.

Strathmore RCMP and the Strathmore Integrated Traffic Unit attempted to locate the vehicle after several calls from the public concerning the reckless driver, police say. Witnesses called to complain about a vehicle traveling of 150 kmh in the area northwest of the city. Callers said that the car was seen driving on the wrong side of the road and swerving at oncoming traffic.

The car was then spotted by the RCMP heading westbound on Secondary Highway 564 by a member of the Strathmore detachment. As the suspect vehicle approached the Peace Officer’s car, the suspect swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic and headed straight towards the officers’ vehicle. At the last second, the suspect swerved back into the westbound lane, narrowly missing the stationary officer.

The driver then continued on into the city of Calgary, keeping up his high speed.

The RCMP notified the Calgary Police Service of the suspect and his arrival in their jurisdiction, but because of the high speed, the suspect was not seen again until until he was traveling northbound on the QEII and had struck three cars. The suspect continued his travels towards Airdrie, but then before getting into Airdrie, he turned westbound down a range road towards Cochrane.

Cochrane RCMP were notified and they initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle was stopped without further incident and the young man was taken into custody.

The investigation is continuing at this time. Charges for Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Fail to Stop for Police and Hit & Run are being considered at this time. A lone male, age 22 years old, from Rocky Mountain House is currently in custody and charges are pending.
