Obama makes a great statemnt!

“I want to be very clear in calling upon the Egyptian authorities to refrain from any violence against peaceful protesters,” Obama said in a statement shortly after speaking with Mubarak by telephone for 30 minutes.

“The people of Egypt have rights that are universal. That includes the right to peaceful assembly and association. The right to free speech and the ability to determine their own destiny. These are human rights.”

Obama also made a lot of great statements when he was running for president.

Too bad wishful statements don't bring troops home from war or stop funding dictators all over the world.

Obama does'nt want to "hurt egypts" feelings, USA needs the SUEZ Canal, in which Egypt is an ally.

its a very sad situation, the only time you cut mass media transport is when you want to do something you don't want the world to see.

The Suez canal is maintained by Egypt but not "owned" by Egypt (international group).

Any vessel fron any country must be allowed to pass through during times of war or peace.

Yeah, the shipping lanes are going to be screwed.

It will be interesting to see what oil is at next week. Food is sure to follow, with pricing and also delays (which potentially means more spoilage and lower quality because of the extra weeks needed in transport)

Better enjoy your tropical fruits now while they are still fresh and relatively inexpensive.

Egypt, back to Banana republic.

Well apparently according to Haertz, an Israeli paper... some of the Egyptian military is joining the protesters.

Wild.

I was at the protest in front of the UN in NY earlier today. We were getting regular updates from Cairo. Some people still had contacts, while others were from Al-Jazeera. Here are a couple shots.

Reports are today (6th day of protest) that the military did a few low passes over the cities with fighter jets.

I'd look up what capabilities Egypt has, but I'm assuming they are mid-range donated US fighters. Must look into this...

Which just makes me ask the question for Canada again: Why are we paying for fighter jets again? Shouldn't the US be either giving some to us for free, or at a half price discount for being landlocked neighbors?

Just got out of a panel discussion with a couple Journalists who were there during the entire revolution. Interesting to hear the stories first hand. They went into discussion about how the people were ready to be hurt/killed for their cause. The journalists got really worried when the mainstream media high-tailed it out of Egypt. The protesters honestly believed that Obama had ordered the media out so that the army can just come in and massacre the crowds. This enraged the mob even more and added to their desires. Al-Jazeera became their only source of information. With networking channels cut off, the protesters relied on old-fashioned flyers to communicate.

What was also interesting was how social media was used to convince the masses that revolution was necessary. One of the journalists was invited to meet a ring-leader (yes they have a chain of command) in Bahrain. The ring-leader and friends went on to burn the tires of nearby cars to entice the riot police to attack them. Of course they documented the entire procedure to leak it to the public and create an air of anger.

WTF are you on about? I am just telling you what the journalists were saying. I am reporting first hand account from someone who was actually there, and that becomes my attempt at bashing Obama? :dunno:
