The 2011 season is nearly underway, so it's time to start this year's car unveiling thread....

I'm not a Ferarri fan by any stretch, but their car is up first:

Here's a link on how the F150 comapres to the F10.

It's going to look different by the time the first test happens in a week. Unless, they're not hiding anything right now, which I seriously doubt.

^ Yeah they're saying that the aero's gonna change a lot by the first race.

"...the upper-body aerodynamics would be completely reworked over the course of testing, meaning the car will be quite different for the first race in Bahrain on March 13."

http://en.espnf1.com/ferrari/motorsport/story/39070.html

One reason might be to simplify the car's aero to be able to model the behaviour of the new tires as accurately as possible. Although, I think McLaren has it right by doing the first test with last year's car, since mechanical reliability is usually one of their strong points.

Thank god they got rid of those stupid fucking ugly aero wheel covers.

Interesting that they went with the Mercedes roll over and airbox structure. And lol at the lack of push rods in the last photo...

That is pretty crazy! I wonder if they are going to suck for top end power with such a long exhaust though

Sauber movable rear wing.

The adjustable rear wing is not as fancy as I thought it would be but I would hold judgement until I see what other teams has to offer.
The Renault FEE is a pretty radical idea I sure hope it doesnt cause any reliability issues.

Thanks for posting the large Lotus pics, I've been trying to find large ones so I can easily see the similarities compared to the MGP W01.

There's not a whole lot more to offer in terms of the rear wings. It's well defined in the rules, I believe it was a 5mm gap to 30mm gap in the down position. The goal is to get that transition going as soon as possible, which Sauber (and every other team) has done.

I'd be surprised if there was anything innovative in this area.

Ya I guess there's not much to it other than actuating up and down. The only thing that makes it exciting is the fact that it can only be used for passing only.

Well you can use the movable rear wing throughout qualifying. I'm just not sure if it's the pre-defined "passing area", or the entire track.

3.18.2 The adjustable bodywork may be activated by the driver at any time prior to the start of the race and, for
the sole purpose of improving overtaking opportunities during the race, after the driver has completed a
minimum of two laps after the race start or following a safety car period.
The driver may only activate the adjustable bodywork in the race when he has been notified via the control
electronics (see Article 8.2) that it is enabled. It will only be enabled if the driver is less than one second
behind another at any of the pre-determined positions around each circuit. The system will be disabled by
the control electronics the first time the driver uses the brakes after he has activated the system.
The FIA may, after consulting all competitors, adjust the above time proximity in order to ensure the stated
purpose of the adjustable bodywork is met.

I would read it assume "any time before the race" to mean anywhere on the track, because they dont mention the pre-determined track positions until the part about adjusting the wing during the race. I believe the teams are interpretting it that way as well, since they are saying that the drivers are going to have a though time adjusting to the difference in speed at the end of straights between qualifying/practice and the race.

So I read from one of the comments on planetf1 that rumour has it that McLaren might also have FEE, just like Renault.

rage2
02-02-2011, 10:04 AM
Rumor has it that McLaren has a more efficient system that's a combination of the STR double floor and the Renault front exhaust. Craig Scarborough says that's not the case, however, and he's mostly right.

The L inlets explained:

http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2011/02/04/mclaren-mp4-26-l-shaped-sidepods/

Clever idea, catch all the dirty air from the tires to the radiator, clean undisturbed air goes through the sidepod valley feeding the diffuser. But will it work?
