View Full Version : Want to get a dog. where to start looking?

We're interested in getting a dog, but are a bit unsure on where to look. We are thinking of either a lhasa apso, yorkshire terrier, boston terrier, or similar in size and temperment.

We've only been to petland so far, but neither of us are sure about buying a dog from there.

Are there any other places or breeders that we should check out.

Thanks

Tim

please do not buy a dog from petland or any pet store, go to a well known and ckc registered breeder with a health guarantee, and check them out thoroughly (online reviews, check out the condition of their house etc...)

Desi also has a good point but the problem is (IMO) if you are looking for a specific type of dog it can be hard to find one to adopt. Especially if you are looking for a pure bred. From my experience looking for a dog this year you mostly find mutts through adoption agencies.

Adorable!

May I ask why you decided on a Yorkie, Boston, and Lhasa?

I adopted my boston terrier froma shelter in Lacombe, they were HORRIBLE to deal with but i liked the dog and didn't want her to suffer because the people that run the place are morons.

in the end she ended up costing around $800 for the adoption fee/vet bills.

she is a great little dog though, doesn't bark, really friendly once she warms up to people, she is a little skittish but she did have a rough go as she had giardia/parasites..

There is a few boston terrier rescue organization's online also.

If you do not do the rescue thing then def go to a reputable breeder or even if it is someone private make sure they are retards and running a puppy mill.

I've never owned dogs growing up but I had to learn all of this recently:

1. Never from pet stores
2. Be very careful about ads in kijiji etc. Many come from puppy mills, others are raised poorly and can have behavioral problems that will be hard to correct
3. Buying/Adopting from a rescue is often good, and cheapest, and you get a good report on the animal's health and they will have done shots etc. But they are staffed by giant retards that think dogs are above humans and that its cruel to let dogs live in apartments etc, so be prepared for nonsense.
4. SPCA is cheap, and will let anyone adopt, but it is hard to find anything but pit bulls. Down here it is 101% pit bulls and chihuahas, and dogs with behavioral problems.
5. Budget for obedience classes, or putting up with the little bastards will cause you grief

Get a french bulldog. They are really good pets, good temperaments too and super funny. I just recently adopted one from Patti in the Medicine Hat area, she's listed on Kijiji, check her out.

I would recommend Boston Terrier and Frenchie. That are not large, and grooming is easy. Cost of health care for them can be high because of certain traits and issues with dogs that have that type of head development. French Bulldog do have a tendency of getting hip problems.

Please adopt from a rescue organization.

We got our dog through these guys. They have an awesome setup where you can foster dogs until they're adopted. We did this until we found a girl that we wanted to keep. You can try small dogs, big ones, and they set you up with all the supplies. It will also give you an idea if you can actually handle a dog, without any type of obligation.

i adopted from the city, it felt nice to do it, would I do it again, no.
the dog i got is dumb as nails but he's part of the family now so there's no going back, next time I will get a puppy so i can train him from the start, my current dog is 6 and has behavoir problems

finally got him trained to go to the door when he needs to piss or pee but he doesn't bark and if you don't notice him then he pisses or shits by the door on the carpet

Hang a bell on the door and teach him to hit it for going out.
Our dog picked it up fairly quickly.

Are you saying the reason your dog is dumb is cause u got him from the city?

adam c

no, he's just dumb, i would assume because of how he was raised/treated/trained prior to the adoption but they don't tell you he has behavoiral issues, if they did i probably wouldn't have adopted him and went for a different dog, it was the vet who told us afterwards just seeing him for a couple minutes

Animal services is good - and the spca has more than pitbulls... both have online listings to browse.

My heart gets torn every time I browse kijiji, there have been some gorgeous dogs up lately...
