In the market for a car between 25000 and 30000
had an 06 g35 coupe, loved it. looking at upgrading to an 08 g37. also considering a 2007 328i or 335i.
I loved infiniti, but bmw has its rep.
I've also heard about a bunch of issues with the 335's when compared to the 328, but I like the power of the 335.
What do you guys think?

I think BMW build quality is better than infiniti but you pay a justified premium for it.

As for 335 issues, I believe that was largely the fuel pump which BMW has now recognized.

That said, I've heard the G37s have a noticeable power gain over the G35s.

The G37 is much quicker than the 328 however the 328 is a better handler and is better built in all respects. If you go to a 335 it's no contest, it's an amazing car. The HPFP issues with the 335 are now part of a recall so just make sure it gets completed. That being said the market for both vehicles is all over the place. There are a lot of 3s and Gs out there that have had a hard life. Try to find one with low mileage and budget for an extended warranty. If you're looking for something specific in price and model pm me and I may be able to help.

.

Agreed - my dad's q45 has through-rust developing in both rear wheel well arches after less than 10yrs of use. Infiniti's (corporate) response - 'rust may be normal...go away'.

Is the car driven in the snow?

is it undercoated yearly?

Are you serious?

A 10 year old Q45 would be from the 90s. I won't be surprised by rust at all from cars in the 90s. Especially if it's not wash often in winter.

As for G37 vs 3.

Unless it's MT, stick with 09 or newer G37 with the new 7spd AT. G37 is pretty fun car but a bit less impractical compare to the 3. Smaller trunk, less rear head room etc.

328 isn't that fast and 335 have HPFP issue. I'll make sure you have extended warranty option before picking a BMW.

*less than* 10yrs old - 2002

I've seen several with similar problems - through rust in both rear wheel well arches.

I detail it every few months; the "weird" thing is there's an area by the passenger door where rocks pound the living crap out of it. Every few months I'm re-touching it up with touchup paint ..... but it doesn't have a spec of rust on it. Go several inches higher and all of a sudden I can pull rusted pieces of the body off.

i don't think those rear arch areas were properly treated in the factory.

On a pure performance basis, M3.
As a dd, the M3 is starting to look a little dated compared to the G37 IMO. If the money is the same, I'd take the G.

Having had both the G37 and the 335i both in my house both in sedan versions I can say that both are decent cars with decent build quality. My biggest observation is that the BMW is a drivers car where as the infinity is a computer geeks car. The infinity has more electronics and gadgets to keep the driver entertained, Driving the BMW alone will keep you entertained, esp if you get the Dinan chip.

Bushings, Tie Rod Ends, Water Pump, Rear Subframe, axles on high horsepower applications.

I had a red on black 01 and never had problems with it. But maintenance can be expensive, make sure it had had the rear subframe replaced under warranty etc.

If it isn't a daily driver it should be fine, but if it is a DD it cant compare to a 07 G37 that you were looking at that is 5 years newer and had warranty imo.

335i > G27 > 328i

HPFP isn't that big of an problem.

I'd recommend the 335i but my friends/clients that have had them have all had issues with them. And personally, the 328i is too slow. The g37 bores me, so I'd say get a 335i with an extended warranty.

BTW, my buddy finally returned his white 08 335xi, manual, no NAV at end of lease.

That car has serious electrical problems where NOTHING but the speedo works and you can barely drive it in limp mode. Been in the shop twice for more than 3 weeks each time.

Avoid it.

For his trouble, BMW did give him a kick ass deal on a 2011 model of the same car with M package.

I like the interior of the G37 but hated the handling. It seemed to push so much in the front end. I was expecting much better.

IMO depends on how long you plan on keeping it. Japaneese cars don't age as well as German cars IMO. The G35's look pretty dated vs a BMW of the same vintage.

If you keep up with maintenance and "drive" cars then BMW, if you "use" cars then the BMW is definately not for you. My family has a lot of BMW's and they've all been great cars (dealer sucks though) but they also maintain them very well. I have a buddy with an Infinity and although it's not as nice as the BMW it requires almost no maintenance -- and he is very hard on it.

328i is only about half a second slower to 60mph than the G37 according to a C&D comparo (5.9s vs 5.4s). Not a massive difference you'd expect from 100 more hp and with the 328i you avoid the turbo issues of the 335i.
