Deerfoot Trail is a nightmare Tuesday morning as fog and black ice make the roadway extremely hazardous. The calgary Police Service is currently investigating multiple motor vehicle collisions, some involving minor injuries in the area of 17 Avenue SE.

As a result of the collisions traffic is heavily congested on both southbound and norhtbound Deerfoot Trail. Police are asking motorists to find alternate routes.

Crews are sanding and plowing, but it will be some time before the roadway is cleared, according to police.

In the last 24 hours over 230 non-injury collisions and 25 collisions resulting in injuries have been reported to the Calgary Police Service.

On the bridge just south of the Anderson turn off on Deerfoot, when you go over the river your lucky if you can see 20ft in front of you.

Just came up the Deerfoot from Bow Bootom to Beddington about an hour ago. Watched 4 different cars spin out into the guard rail. On the Beddington off ramp I saw an F350 and trailer hit the guard rail and now facing the wrong direction. It's brutal out there.

I was south bound deerfoot this morning at like 6:30, and the fog was so thick by the 17th ave turn, i couldnt see a damn thing. That was crazy. Lots of accidents northbound for sure....and lots of donkeys in the southbound lanes rubbernecking and slowing us all down.

The fog was pretty thick last night. Ditched vehicles and emergency crews were everywhere. Deerfoot/Anderson was the worst IMO.

I never really noticed ppl using hazard lights while driving very often, but almost everyone was blinking last night!

Fog was really bad last night coming back from Okotoks in the valley just south of Cranston.... and Cranston was really bad! Could hardly see 10' in front of car.

So why aren't weather conditions monitored to anticipate fog on the roadway? At least they could get sand down so that once you actually saw the vehicle immediately in front of you, there might be enough time to stop.....

Adjust speeds and following distance to match the road conidtions and there will be no accidents.

Fog tires? Wtf? Honestly you need fog lights, without them you can't do anything in the fog and die!

Some people just refuse to take any responsibility for their driving. Too much fog, not enough sand, I'm following to close and can't stop, it's cold outside, cry cry cry. I think some people won't be happy until taxes were raised 9000% and the Deerfoot was heated from underneath. Of course there's be more crying about not being able to afford a car, or food. Common sense is all too uncommon.

But then we'd need dehumidifiers too, because all the melting snow would turn to ice fog. I don't think 9000% tax increase will cover that as well.

Fine. Every car should be equiped with forward facing exhaust like the new F1 cars that heat the pavement before they drive over it. Then there will be no ice.

I like the fog tires idea...

In reality, it's driving skills. Unfortunately, we can't make everyone an awesome driver. Not even winter tires will be able to handle ice on a bridge deck. I mean, really, if you think about it, Calgary drivers are already decent drivers cause really, I hear of 200 car pile ups in Europe and the USA because of these types of events. Kinda sucks that there's really nothing you can do about it. Fuck just stay the hell home and be a hermit.

All we need is for everyone to drive a Lotus Exige S with inter tires.

This was last night at Ikea around 9pm, it got pretty crazy on deerfoot around that area, I remember passing calfrobe bridge and not being able to see 5 feet in front of you!

I found my driving lights work pretty good with a blue/violet bulb. I just adjust them so they point down a bit more.

Weird. I drove to work at 3am on Deerfoot from Glenmore to McKnight, and there was no fog to be seen.

I wear my Thermal Vision goggles, makes it easy to see. I think thermal vision HUD's should be mandatory on all cars, retroactively.

I can just imagine pulling up at the lights next to a Corolla full of terrified passengers and looking over at them, emotionless, with wearing big heavy military assassin goggles and CADPAT.
