I don't get how Renault would allow him to race rally cars and risk him getting hurt, especially after doing so well in this years pre-season tests.

Reports are saying the surgery is done and no amputation was needed, but it is too early to tell how much use he will regain of his right hand.

Kubica's one of those drivers that finds driving F1 "boring". His true passion is in rallying.

He'll probably be out for the entire 2011 at a minimum.

On an interesting note, one of Renault's reserve drivers is Ho-Pin Tung, chinese driver, so we might actually see the first ever Chinese F1 driver.

Freak accident. The guardrail punched right through the car and fucked the right side of his body, including his hand.

You can see Robert still in the car in the pic. It took over an hour before they got the proper equipment there to get him out of the car.

Doctor: Kubica will require further surgery
Monday 7th February 2011

Doctor: Kubica will require further surgery
Robert Kubica was awakened from an induced coma as he began the first day of a lengthy rehabilitation period from serious injuries sustained in a rally crash.

Kubica, who suffered a partially severed right hand and fractures to his right arm and leg in a high-speed shunt on the Ronde di Andora Rally, was able to speak to medical staff for the first time following seven hours in surgery on Sunday evening.

The 26-year-old's Super 2000 Skoda Fabia left the road and collided with a church on the first special stage of the rally, with reports suggesting his injuries were caused by a crash barrier penetrating the driver's footwell. His co-driver, Jakub Gerber, was unhurt.

The head of the intensive care unit at the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure, Dr Giorgio Barabino, shed some more light on the extent of the trauma suffered by the Pole, saying that several transfusions were required to stabilise his condition due to significant blood loss.

"Kubica is conscious, he talks and understands what has happened," said Dr Barabino.

"The first thing he thought about was his co-driver and was informed about his condition.

"Things are going well considering that there was substantial damage. There were huge difficulties we faced and the necessary measures were taken immediately.

"Kubica lost a lot of blood, that is why the first hour was critical.

"He was unconscious and could not be operated on when he arrived to the hospital. He needed many transfusions during the stabilising process as well as during the very long surgery."

The hospital's director of orthopaedics Dr Francesco Lanza confirmed that Kubica will require further surgery on his other injuries.

"The patient will have to undergo more surgery: not only on the parts already treated, but also for other problems and traumas he suffered, for which we couldn't work on because of the emergency," he told Il Vostro Giornale. "The important thing was to stabilise the patient and to pad the biggest wounds.

"For the fractures suffered on his leg, he will need at least three or four months to allow the bone to set back together."

Earlier, Kubica's manager Daniele Morelli said the Formula One driver had taken "important steps forward" in his recovery.

"He is suffering because of the lesions to his leg and arm but the brain activity is okay and we are certainly more relieved than with respect to 24 hours ago," said Morelli.

"The doctors have said he has taken important steps forward."

Professor Mario Igor Rossello, who operated on Kubica last night, has said the Lotus Renault driver will take a year to recover from his injuries, while more immediately it will take the best part of a week to determine whether the procedure to reconstruct his hand was a success.

Rossello, a specialist hand surgeon, said: "The hand is warm which means the surgery went well. It was a difficult operation.

"We will need six days to verify if the blood circulation in the limb responds as it should do."

Lotus Renault team principal Eric Boullier has defended the decision to allow Kubica to contest a rally so close to the start of the new F1 season.

"Robert is a true racer, his life is motor racing," Boullier told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It was agreed between us that he keep doing the rallies because it was part of his balance in his life.

"We knew the risks of doing the rally; he knew it as well. It was agreed together."

Boullier echoed Morelli's view that his driver's progress had been encouraging, and even refused to rule Kubica out of the whole of the coming F1 season despite the doctors' forecast of a year on the sidelines.

"This morning it was really fine - they needed 24 hours to make sure he recovered completely and it looks like this morning they are all happy," Boullier said.

"He is definitely out for a couple of months. The recovery will be quicker than one year, but it is a bit early to know exactly how long he will need."

The new F1 season gets under way in Bahrain on March 13 and Lotus Renault have a choice to make as to whether they turn to one of their reserve drivers to fill the void.

Brazilian Bruno Senna, who raced for Hispania last year, and Frenchman Romain Grosjean, who contested seven grands prix for Renault in 2009, are the men in the frame, although the team may yet seek a more experienced head, with both Nick Heidfeld and Vitantonio Liuzzi - both of whom are without a drive in 2011 - likely candidates.

"We are already starting to think and work on a contingency plan," Boullier added.

"We don't know yet, we are actually waiting to know how long it will take because [should it be] a short-term replacement we will take one of our reserve drivers.

"If he has to be longer we may have to consider different options."

Here's a video of the car behind Kubica, which shows it arriving at the scene approx 1 minute after the crash.

ALbxMiwf4nw

From the looks of it, he lost control, hit the ditch and drove straight into the guardrail, which punched through the engine bay and sliced into the cockpit. The car then spun around and wrapped the guardrail around the car.

So it's been confirmed that the barrier not only cut into the cockpit, but went ALL the way through the entire car. Kubica's lucky to be alive. Co-driver walked away without a scratch too. Could've been 10000x worse.

Robert Kubica's co-driver reveals details of agonising wait for emergency services following horror smash in Italy

Robert Kubica's rally co-driver has revealed the full horror of the crash which has left the Renault driver's Formula One career in jeopardy.

Fellow Pole Jakub Gerber confirmed that Kubica's catalogue of injuries were caused by a crash barrier penetrating the front of the car and slamming into the right side of his close friend's body.

Recounting the details of the accident which took place shortly after the start of the Ronde di Andora rally in Italy on Sunday, Gerber revealed: 'We came off on a right turn and until we came to a complete stop it didn't look serious.

What was Robert Kubica doing rallying in the first place? Read Phil Duncan's F1 blog

Touch and go: Kubica arrives at hospital before undergoing extensive surgery

'Only when I saw that there was a metal barrier pressing into Robert and blocking him moving I realised that the situation was very serious.'

Kubica underwent more than seven hours of surgery to repair multiple fractures to his hand, partially severed arm, elbow, shoulder and leg.

The 26-year-old is understood to have lost between three and five litres of blood while he lay trapped in the mangled wreckage of the Skoda Fabia he was driving in the low-key rally event.

Gerber, who was unhurt, added: 'The ambulance got there quickly but I think we waited at least half an hour for the fire engine and cutting Robert free also took a long time. I think the whole rescue took about an hour, maybe longer.

Horrifying sight: Cutting Kubica free from the wreckage of his car was a lengthy process

'The first crew didn't have the shears so they had to wait for another crew. Then the helicopter couldn't land in that spot, so Robert had to be moved and more time was lost.'

Fellow competitor Mauro Moreno was first to arrive on the scene and said: 'It was a horrifying sight. I called Kubica by name a couple of times, but he didn't reply.

'The steel (barrier) was sticking out of the hatchback. His co-driver signalled to me he had no problems so I asked Robert if he was OK, too, but that was useless.

'We shouldn't have cars with so little protection at the front. It's not the first time a crash like this has happened. The federation should think of something to protect the cockpit.'

Team player: Kubica's future in Formula One remains uncertain

Renault team principal Eric Boullier defended Kubica's right to indulge in his passion for rallying, saying:

'We've let him do it because rallying is what he loves to do. We knew the risks and so did he. We didn't want a robot or a corporate man for a driver.'

Professor Igor Rossello carried out the operation to try and get Kubica's mangled right hand functioning. He said it will take a week to determine whether the operation is a success and a further year for the driver to regain full use. The broken bones in his leg will need three or four months to set.

But Boullier claimed: 'Doctors always predict the worst-case scenario. The recovery will be quicker than one year but it is too early to know exactly how long. He is definitely out for a couple of months.'

Kubica will remain in intensive care for a least another 24 hours and will require further surgery. Renault reserve driver Bruno Senna could start the season in Kubica's place, but if he is out for the season the team are likely to opt for a driver with more experience.

It is understood McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button would require permission from their team to take part in a rally and, given Sunday's accident, it is highly unlikely that would ever be forthcoming.

Sounds like the news on recovery is as positive as could be expected. I hope he has a good recovery, and regardless of what happens with his racing future that his quality of life can be decent. That was a lot of blood he lost and talk of possible amputation is never a good sign.

It always scary how a split second can make such a difference. If he hit the barrier a fraction differently then the car could have bounced off and it would have been just another rally crash. However a fraction differently could have also meant death. But thats the risk that racing involves.
Have a speedy recovery.

Heidfeld confirmed. Exciting.

http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2011/2/11750.html

Renault have announced that Nick Heidfeld has joined the team, taking over driving duties from the injured Robert Kubica, starting at this week’s test session in Barcelona. It follows his evaluation at Jerez last week.

The 33-year-old German is one of the most experienced drivers in Formula One, having started 172 races over the last 11 seasons. He will race alongside Vitaly Petrov when the new season gets underway in Bahrain on March 13.

“I would have liked to come back to Formula One in different circumstances, but I’m proud to have been given this chance,” said Heidfeld. “Everything has happened so quickly, but I’ve been very impressed by what I have seen so far in terms of the facilities and the dedication of the people at Enstone.

“I really enjoyed the test last week in Jerez and I’ve already settled in well with the guys at the track. I have a good feeling for the car, which is quite innovative. I’m extremely motivated and can’t wait for the season to begin.”

Renault team principal Eric Boullier commented: “The team has been through a very difficult couple of weeks and we had to react quickly. We gave Nick a chance in Jerez last week and he really impressed us. He’s quick, experienced and is very strong technically with his feedback and understanding of the car.

“We always said the priority was to have an experienced driver in the car and we feel he is the ideal man for the job. We are pleased to welcome Nick to the team and look forward to a strong start to the season with him and Vitaly in Bahrain.”

This week’s four-day test at Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya begins on Friday. Heidfeld will be at the wheel of Renault’s R31 on Saturday and Monday, with Petrov in the car on Friday and Sunday.

Kubica set to leave hospital
Robert Kubica could be discharged from hospital before Easter, according to a report.

The Renault driver was admitted to Santa Corona hospital in Liguria, Italy, on February 6 after he was seriously injured in a rally crash. He went under the knife four times for surgery on his damaged hand, foot, elbow and shoulder. His first operation to repair an almost completely severed right hand lasted seven hours.

Polish news agency PAP reports that hospital spokesperson Roberto Carrozzino confirmed that the Polish driver could be returning home in the next few days as the risk of infection has now passed.

The 26-year-old is currently undergoing rehabilitation is using a "walker" to move around.

"Hello everybody, here I am. Sorry for the delay in contacting you but I preferred to wait until the moment I could finally share some positive news with you. First of all I would like to pay a huge amount of thanks to my fans whose support has been simply incredible since my accident in Italy back in February. I have been literally submerged by letters and various gifts and objects and it seems the flow is not slowing down. I also want to thank all the people in the world of F1 who showed in various manners their concern for the difficult situation I’m in. “

Robert, just over 10 weeks on from your accident – how are you feeling?
Robert Kubica: I am starting to feel a lot better now. My recovery is moving in the right direction: my strength and weight are increasing day on day and as a result I will leave the Santa Corona hospital very soon.

When exactly will you leave the hospital?
Robert Kubica: I don’t have a precise date as yet but I hope to be able to leave within the next 10 days.

Concerning the injury to your hand, how is the mobility now?
Robert Kubica: The mobility of my hand is limited but this is pretty normal in this kind of situation, because the connected arm muscles are still very weak due to the long period of immobility. Things are definitely improving day by day.

Can you tell us a little bit about your rehabilitation programme?
Robert Kubica: As soon as I leave hospital, I’ll head to my home in Monaco for a short period of rest. Then I’ll move to Dr. Ceccarelli ‘s facilities in Italy where I will start a deep rehabilitation program and a preliminary soft training programme. The two programmes will gradually cross over based on the speed of my recovery.

There’s been an amazing reaction from the fans – how has the response helped your recovery?
Robert Kubica: I must admit that it’s been overwhelming and, yes, it’s helped me a lot. I really didn’t realise that quite this many fans were supporting me. I’m very flattered and I promise them that, when I’m back, I’ll give them my absolute best.

Have you been staying in regular touch with the team since you’ve been away?
Robert Kubica: Yes, of course. Especially since the season started, I’ve been liaising with my engineers on what’s been going on over race weekends. They are sending me the race reports so I can remain up to date and fully informed, as if I were there at the tracks. Eric Boullier is also in constant contact, keeping up to date with my general condition.

Have you watched all the races so far this year, and what are you making of the new season and LRGP’s performances so far?
Robert Kubica: Yes I’ve watched them, and there is no doubt that it’s been a strong start to the season. The potential of the car, which I already noticed in the February Valencia test, seems to be confirmed. As usual, it’s now important that the development done in Enstone continues to produce consistent updates for maintaining this level of performance. The guys did a great job with this car and I’m sure they’ll continue to improve.

Finally, what messages would you like to pass on to your supporters in the Formula 1 world?
Robert Kubica: Well, just continue to enjoy the F1 show even though I’m not there at the moment. From my side, I’ll try to use my difficult experience to come back as strong as I possibly can.

Robert Kubica injures leg in fall
By Jonathan Noble Wednesday, January 11th 2012, 18:01 GMT

Robert KubicaRobert Kubica has injured his leg in a fall near his home, with sources close to the Polish driver suggesting that he has reopened a fracture that he sustained in his rally accident last year.

It is understood that Kubica fell over on ice in Pietrasanta, where he lives, and subsequently complained of pain in the right leg which was broken in his crash. He was driven to the local hospital for checks.

Although there has been no official statement, it is understood that it has been found that Kubica has reopened the fracture in his right tibia.

Kubica's latest injury setback comes on the same day that Ferrari played down talk that it was planning to test the Polish driver later this year once he was fully recovered.

Sources suggested that the injury is likely to delay his recovery by at least three weeks.

"That was not on our plan," said Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali at the annual Wrooom media event.

"For sure Robert Kubica is a great driver that had a very severe injuries and at the moment he is still working very hard to try to go back to his normal living.

"So before any kind of thinking or discussion of whatever could be, we need to wait and see. For sure that kind of injury is taking a long time to recover so I can say we will wait and see if he is going to recover, but at the moment there is nothing in place."

3 weeks my ass.

As demanding as driving F1 is, I think that as long as he's not rushed into a car and if he can avoid another major accident (he had another one in Montreal remember? Seems prone) for a while, he won't re injure himself
