Make sure you save your SHSH blobs.

Cydia should prompt you on the main page by saying "Make my life easier".

I am on 4.1 and jailbroken. So I can update my phone to the latest firmware that iTunes has and jailbreak it again, without that tethered way that was out a while ago? I think in that way every time your phone battery died you had to re-connect it to the computer to get the phone going again. I didn't want the hassle so I never upgraded. So, does this change that?

I use a Mac btw. Also, how can I save all my games/apps/sms that are on my phone, so that I don't lose them after updating and re-jailbreaking?

SlickA70
02-07-2011, 09:41 PM
Exactly, this is untethered (not plugged) jailbreak.

You need to back up your phone, update, restore and then proceed to jailbreak.

shakalaka
02-07-2011, 09:53 PM
Ok, so I should be following the step like that?

Back up my phone, update it in iTunes and then restore it before following the jailbreaking steps?

Where can I find the step by step instructions for Mac?

Thanks

SlickA70
02-07-2011, 10:00 PM
Yeah in that order.

Thanks will give it a go now.

Although I reckon, I am gonna have to install winterboard, installous and all those things again right? Rest of the stuff I can just back up from iTunes, but not the Cydia stuff.

SlickA70
02-07-2011, 10:08 PM
You got it.

Winterboard - search in Cydia
Sbsettings - search in Cydia

In Cydia go: manage, sources, edit, add

Http://Cydia.hackulo.us - Installous/appsync 4.0 (needed)

Http://sinfuliphonerepo.com - Paid apps for free

shakalaka
02-07-2011, 10:11 PM
Yeap, those are all the sources that I currently got.

Thanks a lot man, don't have to search them again. Just updating the firmware now, will turn it off and start jailbreaking once that's done.

SlickA70

Let me know how it worked out for you!

02-07-2011, 10:59 PM
Ok, so that all worked out great.

is the phone off and itunes not running?

Yea thats right.

But once you plug the phone in it turns on. I tried both ways, which way is correct?

eglove
02-09-2011, 01:26 PM
as soon as you plug it in, you gotta be quick and hold the home and off switch

SlickA70
02-09-2011, 01:35 PM
Plug in iPhone

Wait for iTunes, then close it

Open greenpois0n

Turn off phone in normal fashion (slide to shut off)

Click begin jailbreak on greenposi0n

Follow instructions exactly

Should prompt you to install jailbreak, do so

Wait till it says quit and let your phone boot up

Hit quit and unplug phone

Install Cydia via loader

stealth
02-09-2011, 02:42 PM
That worked a lot better, but it says jailbreak failed.

repo.insanelyi.com/

theres a new theme app.
add www.themeitapp.com/repo/ to cydia and install the themeit app

sinfuliphonerepo.com/ is a also a very popular source for cracked cydia apps

cydia.hackulo.us/ same as sinfuliphone.

I finally got it to work. I was trying to JB while using tethered internet from my iPhone. GP requires you to be connected to the internet at all times.

As for why it wouldn't go into DFU. I have no reason, maybe I wasn't pressing the home button hard enough as I have the factory plastic on it.

Thx for the help SlickA70.

just updated to 4.2.1 last night, pretty straightforward.
went from 4.0.1, used tiny umbrella, restored to 4.2.1 through iTunes, preserved 1.59.00 baseband in the process for easy unlock. restored from backup, nice!

rare chance of bricking, can always restore to factory firmware through DFU mode (which is the hardest part of the jailbreak lol, holding down the buttons and getting the timing right). Download GreenPoision, very simple, has countdowns for the button holding process, so its VERY easy.

So My girlfriends phone was on 2.1 Jailbroken and Unlocked, I backed it up and then restored, and then upgraded to 4.2.1, and now it wont restore her pictures, contacts etc. Is there anything I can do?

It keeps freezing on the apple logo screen after I try to sync the backup...

I've tried it 3 different times

Search "SMS theme" or something similar in Cydia, download and enable it in winterboard.

Keep in mind, some themes don't work with certain phones (iPhone 3G/3GS themes are standard def while iPhone 4 is high def).

I don't know what the fuck happened. Yesterday in Cydia had an upgrade for installous and since then it's stopped working. I've tried to play around with the installous files in iphone explorer and deleted a whole bunch of shit but it still doesn't work. Every time I try to re-install is from Cydia it give me some overwrite error.

Is there a way I can restore my phone, without upgrading to 4.3, so that I can still jailbreak it on 4.2?

SlickA70
03-23-2011, 01:08 AM
Nope, happened to me to, dunno what happened.

I had to upgrade to 4.3 and downgrade back to 4.2.1, seems to be the only fix I could find.

Make sure you had already saved your shsh blobs in Cydia for 4.2.1 before you do anything.

shakalaka
03-23-2011, 01:12 AM
lol...

I have no idea what you just said, noob proof version please?

Ok so I do a restore and upgrade to 4.3 via itunes?

How do I downgrade to 4.2.1 after that?

What in the heck are shsh blobs and how do I save them in cydia?

Kavy
03-23-2011, 01:14 AM
^^^^^

make sure you only use hackulo to get installous.

It seems Xsellize and sinful have been having some repo issues with installous.

I updated installous yesterday and installed a few apps this morning but when I just tried to browse apps it got an API error.

It could be down right now.

shakalaka
03-23-2011, 01:16 AM
Fuck...it's too late for that right now then..anyway. I went into iPhone explorer and fucked about with a whole bunch of installous files and deleted a bunch of them. lol

Guessing restoring to stock and starting over is the only option, which I don't mind so much if I can figure out how to fucking do that.

I even removed the hackulo source and now when I try to re-add it in the sources, it says not found.

I'll just bump this thread so we don't have multiple jailbreaking threads.

Can anyone confirm that upon restoring from previous back up, that it gets rid of all traces of the jailbreak? I read online that it does, but I just want to see if anyone has personally tried it before I go and risk losing my warranty. I was thinking of bringing it in to get the temperature checked out. My friends over heated and he said they have a program that can check the temperature record. They replaced the phone on the spot for him when they saw that the phone recorded a temperature which was above normal/safe operating temperature.

Also, do you know if the restore will wipe out that record for the phones temperature?

SlickA70
04-03-2011, 01:17 AM
^
I've brought my iPhone in fully restored from a jailbroken state and they didn't say anything.

Remember to change the carrier logo back to your original carrier before you restore though, it's a bitch doing it afterwards.

jsn
04-03-2011, 01:23 AM
So you restored it from a previous back up though? My previous back up was from a jailbroken state. It didn't carry anything over from the jailbreak did it? I don't know how else to get my contacts back other than restoring from a previous jailbroken backup.

None of the jailbroken apps (i.e., cydia) carried over.

SlickA70
04-03-2011, 01:30 AM
Yes a previous back up from a jailbroken state.

Jailbroken stuff does not carry over regardless of being jailbroken or not.

jsn
04-03-2011, 01:43 AM
awesome! Thanks for the response. I should have brought my phone in earlier. It's only happened once but about 2 months ago I had that yellow triangle overheat error page. I don't think the temperature log reads that far back, but it does seem to run fairly warm at times. I'll see what they say.

Anyone know if a restore wipes the temperature log?

SlickA70
04-03-2011, 04:46 AM
Just to reiterate:

A jailbroken phone needs to be completely restored via iTunes to go back to factory spec.

A backup made from a jailbroken phone and restored onto a non/jailbroken phone will work fine (Contacts, Calenders, etc etc).

Just in case I misunderstood what you were asking .

jsn
04-03-2011, 11:00 AM
Yea I got that. I'm just wondering if it wipes the internal temperature log it keeps. The phone keeps a log of the operating temperature which the techs can check to see if your phone overheated. I'm just wondering if it wipes that too. It's not an app or anything like that.

SlickA70
04-03-2011, 01:25 PM
I'm not to sure about overheating.

I restored my iPhone before I went into the Apple store and they said they could not bring up diagnostic information due to the fact I wiped my phone before hand.

Mind you the diagnostic was only looked up to remedy battery problems.

He said the phone needed atleast a 48 hour run to collect enough information to send back a proper reading.

SlickA70

Jailbreaking 95% of the time fucks your battery up nicely.

Dont know if its the extra coding or what but 3/4 iPhones I've owned have given me this issue, ranging from my 3GS to two of my 4's.

Just curious, but how long does everyone's battery last with the jailbreak?

SlickA70
04-03-2011, 09:24 PM
Mine goes a full day at about a 2-5% drop every hour with little to no use, which is awesome.

About 10-15% drop with usage (texting, games, music), all at full brightness. Very good as well.

My 4 before this went about an hour or two before death lol...

... Just sitting there.

jsn
04-03-2011, 09:47 PM
mine definitely wasn't as bad as that during jailbreak. But over the last few weeks it definitely seemed to get worse. During web browsing, it would drop a percent ever 30 seconds to a minute or so it seemed.

quite abit better now that I refreshed and updated. Probably won't jailbreak it now.

J.M.
04-03-2011, 10:54 PM
I guess mine isn't as bad as I thought it was.

I've used it for about 4.5 hours today (text, videos, games) and it's been on standby for about 15 hours since I fully charged it last night and I'm sitting at 51% right now.

jsn
04-03-2011, 11:32 PM
^^ that's pretty good. 4.5 hours of use plus stand by for 15 hours? that's definitely better than mine. Currently mine shows 3 hours 25 minutes of usage with 14 hours 26 minutes standby and I'm at 51% too.

iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak just released. This latest untethered jailbreak is incredibly complex. I wonder if it's sign it may be awhile before we see another untethered jailbreak.

just did the 4.3.1 untethered that was released yesterday.
used redsn0w, went without a hitch.

One thing that happened, that I've never seen before on a jailbreak .

I've been using the phone a week or so. All contacts, apps, settings were still on the phone before I ran the jailbreak. Everything was preserved with the jailbreak. I could swear I didn't restore from a backup, like I normally would have to.

Basically I ran the jailbreak and all my shit was still there. yee haw.. less pain in the butt, like previous jailbreaks on my old 3G.

anyone chime in on this? I've always lost my data/settings etc and had to restore my settings.

i'm updating to 4.3.1 and jailbreaking. battery life on my phone isn't the greatest, so lets see if it improves.

oh ya 4.1 -> 4.3.1

started up all good, everything went as planned until i opened up cydia. screen started flashing and flickering like crazy, apple picture comes up and an installation bar thing appears. i close cydia, screen stops flashing and flickering but the apple image is still on screen on top of everything. only way to get rid of it is to restart the phone.

few people suggest full restore and back up and then rejailbreak. trying again.

- i don't think you lose anything from a jailbreak. it installs extra things to your iphone. you lose things when you restore it with firmware and start fresh.
- i've read it many times that things get wonky and battery life starts to suck if you restore from a backup. always start fresh. use things like google contacts or idrive. it's a pain to set everything up the first time in gmail but through exchange, everything is pushed including the contacts. gmail can only be set to fetch anyways.
- not many ppl complain about battery life on 4.2.1. but half the ppl complain about it on 4.3 and 4.3.1. i'm still using 4.2.1.
- look for a list of cydia programs that do not work well with 4.3.1. it's out there.
- use pwnage tool if you can (only on mac unfortunately). it's always been the most problem free jailbreak for me. if you don't have access to one, try another pc.
- i didn't believe jailbreaking ruined my battery life before, but to make it clear, it has to do with the programs you install along with cydia. installous isn't the culprit, neither is lockscreen clock hide. i added sinfuliphonerepo and installed a cracked version of mywi and my3g, and that's when my battery life went to hell. i restored to a custom jailbroken 4.2.1 and installed all the apps except for the aforementioned two and battery life is identical to stock 4.2.1 as far as i can tell

Be careful iPhone 4 users, don't update to 4.3.2 yet, the untethered jailbreak is not quite working yet... everyone else is fine.

Various third party vendors are selling factory IMEI unlocks for $150US. Pretty steep price, but at least the unlock doesn't get undone with baseband/OS updates. Works on all iOS versions and basebands.

Alternatively you can buy a Rebel Pro or Gevey sim adaptor. Not the ideal solution and may not work with future OS/baseband updates.

.

u Do know that if apple finds out somehow that it wasn't legit, they'll simply relock it using itunes, btw carriers do this if your are out of your contract for $50 or whatever
