Getting something together for the 6th of March (Sunday). Going out to the Falls or do the winter trails depending on the weather.

Usual requirements;

- 31" tires in good conditions and a full sized spare
- Vehicle mechanically sound
- CB or FRS is a plus
- Tow points front and rear
- Recovery strap
- Be prepared to air down to 15psi or so
- Spare fluids for your rig
- Basic hand tools
- Shovel
- All of the lights on your rig must work
- Plenty of food and water for everyone in the vehicle
- Clothing appropriate to the wearther (boots, gloves, hats), and a change of clothes and shoes for everyone in the vehicle

Plan on meeting at the Smitties in Cochran 9:00 and leave for the trails 9:30.

Yeah but now we are enforcing a strict AT/MT/WT tire type. Can't handle having people rolling all seasons out there. Doesn't make for a quick moving day.

Just a heads up.
The snow is deep in many sections, so be prepared.
Bring enough food for yourself and your passengers for up to two days. You never know what the day has in store.
Bring sleeping bags, again enough for everyone in your vehicle.
Bring a shovel, it should be mandatory IMHO. If you're stuck, be ready for digging out there.

You'll be out again in no time:thumbsup: You now have an idea of what to expect, and you seen that in these conditions the AT's prevail!

How would a stock gc do on this run?

FraserB
02-26-2011, 01:28 AM
I would not bring a stock GC on this run, there is a list of requirements on the first page.

On that note, bring a shovel. We're gonna do the winter trails.

On that note, bring a shovel. We're gonna do the winter trails. I wanna come! I have the tow spots on it and a/t tires. It's a v8 grand Cherokee so it has better clearance than my blazer did and better tires.

These are winter trails. Most of our rigs have a difficult time on these trails. Stock is a very bad thing for winter trails. Unless it's a Rubicon of course.

What tire size do you have on it? I'll check tomorrow, I know it's bone stock with A/T tires. What size comes stock?

FraserB
02-27-2011, 01:35 AM
^ Most likely 225/75r15, thats what was on mine stock.

The only reason we have a set list of requirements that will be enforced is that the winter trails are harder and this is technically a CJA sanctioned open run so there are certain guidelines I follow.

Nope, 28". Most ZJs run a 2" BB (coil spacer) lift to clear 31's.

Do you have all of the aforementioned requirements on page 1? It's not that hard to understand really, if you don't have those items... You will be "the guy" that holds everyone up with getting stuck and all. Sorry if I come across as an A hole, but on these winter trails you can't fuck around. The snow is deep, and it gets cold. So you need to be sure that you are on par with the requirements! You would be fine in the summer time, but with these winter loops... You'll be screwed on the first hillclimb on the winter loops and let me tell you there are MANY steep and loong hill climbs.

On trail it was no problem.. But driving through a clearing I dropped off some shelf and it was just way way to deep.

It does, however judging by what the posts look like, it might not be something easy to do in a stock vehicle? I dunno I had fun last time we went... even made it up that redonk hill to the falls.

I'd say your Jeep would have a good change making it. It definitely meets the requirements set.

This is going ahead, the high on Sunday is supposed to be around -8*C so the right clothes are a good idea.

We are doing the winter loop, so I can't make a firm guarantee on the time we will be off the trail but every effort will be made.

Req's are on the front page. Tow points are NOT OPTIONAL, same with warm clothing and food.

We are meeting at Smitties in Cochrane at 9AM, leaving for the trails at 9:30 sharp. If you want to eat first, show up early. a full tank of gas in needed before leaving.

Any questions, concerns, etc... PM me.

Just got back at 8:30, no more 4x4 for me:eek:

Snapped the front driveshaft.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/fraserbrown1986/IMAG0162.jpg

Got stuck, twice.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/fraserbrown1986/IMAG0155.jpg

I couldn't go over 80kph on the way home since all 4 tires are packed with ice.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/fraserbrown1986/IMAG0163.jpg

But before all that, this happened.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/fraserbrown1986/IMAG0150.jpg

Locked D35c with 33's and chains puked a shaft. Got him off the trails like this.

Tons of fun:thumbsup:

BerserkerCatSplat
03-07-2011, 12:37 AM
Man, of all the bad times to break a shaft. Good work getting him off the trail!

I always wondered though, will the caliper on a rear semi-float with disc brakes keep the axle retained if it breaks? It'd probably stress the caliper and the pad would be dragging the whole way, but would it be enough to get a guy off the trail without the external retaining rig?

Unknown303
03-07-2011, 07:26 AM
Wow am I glad that I didn't go this time. Trying to save my rig for warmer weather.
