Everyone said that about Japan 20 years ago (that they were going to overtake the US). Even if China overtakes the US in terms of size of economy, which I don't think is possible (atleast in the immediate future) they still have a lot of other problems to work out. China is going to undergo a political and social upheaval soon, the people there won't continue to be treated the way they are.

China has been growing at 10%+ yearly for the last 30 years, theres a LOT of overreacting going on.

I doubt that, mainland Chinese are VERY loyal to the government and see it not as a government, but as a patriarch and symbolic head of the family.

The Chinese economy has to triple in size in 10 years to overtake the USA. I don't know about the sustainability of 10%+ growth annually... With housing prices sky rocketing out of control, something's gotta give.

I put a lot of their success on the one child policy.

China has always had excellent growth, but put a great deal of emphasis on population early on instead of dollars. Now that they have cooled their actual headcount - GDP per capita can now more accurately repesent their growth.

And a billion people with the exact same GDP per capita of a nation with millions - is incredible.

And they didn't need to decimate to do it. Human rights champions them Chinese.

24. Japan: $33,828
93. China $7,518

Well, not yet. GDP is afterall based on consumption - not production. If every Chinese person drove a car to and from work - then the GDP would be much higher.

I mean GDP as the Chinese measure it :)

One child policy will cause problems later. Much like Canada's baby boomer retirement. Population will get top heavy.

I'm pretty sure US wishes Egypt style protest in China right now. And Chinese hopes that the kids will focusing on $ and away from politics.

4x as many people, 1/4 the GDP per capita. Make sense.

If China has GDP per capita like Japan, it will surpass US to be the #1.

Assuming no growth in the US the chinese economy has to increase ~300%. It would take roughly 12 years at 12% annual gdp growth. Thats ridicules growth.

I would hate to see a bullet train crash.

all i know is that China rapes the US, and we'll see if Japan can control its deficits.

I love how the west thinks that people are treated like shit and hate it in China, while I have family that grew up here, moved back, and prefer to live in China and are genuinely more happy there.

I've had several WHITE friends that went to China to visit, or teach at their MANY international schools.... they even had a highschool with a specific Alberta recognize curriculum lol...

Anyway, one of them never came back, tanother is going to move there....

Can't be as bad as everyone seems to assume.

There are extreme poverty but if you can hold down a white collar job in the major cities, it's no better or worse than NY/Toronto.

First quarter, versus first year....
