Wait, what? If it's only supposed to be $61 right now, why do all my renewals say $70.45?

same here?!?!?!?

well if you think you are going to keep your car and are paying this mystical $61, see how many years they will let you pay for. I prepaid mine until 2012.

Not to mention higher provincial income tax, property tax and fuel costs.

People in Alberta can be so dense at times.

61 to 70.45

There is a service charge put on by registry agents.. isnt there?

I'm fairly sure part of the rate increase is the inclusion of AMVIC fees ($6.25)

$61 + $9.45 standard service fee. So whatever it goes to in April will be the new price plus $9.45 (unless they decide to raise the service charges as well)

Hahah Yeah, what's the deal with that?
Anyone know exactly where these annual fees are going to?

don't complain, you think they try to nickel and dime you here spend some time down south and you'll be so thankful. my brother just broke his nose while in California, he bought travelers insurance before leaving but the medical centre wouldn't except it so he had to pay $600 out of his pocket for x-rays and stitches!!

April 1st is when the gouging begins. Vehicles have a higher rate, but they are going over board with corporate registry services.

Get in and get your vehicles renewed early.

Oh... and for the posters that asked what the fees were... For a normal vehicle renewal for a year, the government takes $61, the registry takes $9 and gst is $0.45 = $70.45

I think I'll be able to afford the extra 20 a year. :dunno:
I'll just get regular coffee at starbucks, not the fancy flavored ones... :rofl:

^ Its not a big deal if you only have a vehicle or two. But for those of us that have a winter vehicle, summer vehicle, motorcycle, quad, dirtbike or two.... it adds up quickly.

Still even at 5 vehicles it's not like anyone should be going for broke coming up with an additional 100 dollars for it. Plan ahead and know what your expenses are going to be in a year.

You sound like you're doing so horribly, i'm sure these fees will break you.

How much higher than $61? The $70 mentioned? I mean, if you can afford 3 vehicles with the accompanying gas, the insurance, the maintenance etc I don't think an extra 27 bucks a year is going to break you. If it is, I think that says something about you having 3 vehicles!

Did you guys know an un-restricted registration for commercial trucks is around $1600 (IIRC), and it has to be renewed just like yours!

Your life isn't so bad!

Would you prefer it if they "loonied and toonied" their people like other provinces have done?

Its either these annoying little increases, or a big increase somewhere else (income tax or PST/HST, healthcare premiums etc). Or a big dropoff somwhere else (no big road/infrastructure projects, cuts in social services etc).

It isn't about whether it makes or breaks me. I am not overly worried about it, but there are people out there that simply won't have the money for it.

For me, it's a matter of not wanting to spend the extra money. It's like going to buy a car today for $10k but if you go in April, the cost of that car is going to go up 20%. Would you wait til April to buy it? No. Because that cost is something you can readily avoid. Why pay the extra in April, if you can do it now and use the cash for something else.

The other side of this issue that gets me angry, is that they are raising the cost of EVERY service. The most frustrating being corporate registries. Ever single service there has gone up at LEAST 100%. At least. There are services that have gone up 150%.

Try the guys that are paying $4000 a year for registration of their heavy trucks. $1600 isn't near as bad as it could be

For 63,500kg it's actually $3500, but they're nice enough to let you pay it quarterly.

As an example, a $3000 skidoo just cost me $45 bux to plate out here, and would have been ~$500 if I were living in NS...

We can't complain, look at the other provinces....

BC = expensive
SK = who the hell wants to live there?
MB = see above

and as we move more east, its pretty damn expensive there too!
