I thought this would be a good thread to start. I often come across good deals as I spend at least a couple hours a day browsing camera-related stuff, so it would be nice to have a single place for everyone to post any photography related deals as they come across them.

To kick things off there is a great deal on the D7000 today:

In case anyone is one the fence, Vistek has a 1-day deal today for the Nikon D7000 w/ 18-105VR lens kit, $1329.00.

For Comparison:

Memory Express: $1529.99
The Camera Store: $1499.82

Yeah, D7000 body only is on for $1099 at vistek right now...if I didn't have a baby on the way I'd be buying one as a backup body.

Couple more deals today, happen to also be at Vistek:

Valid through March 6, 2011:

Nikon D7000 body $1099.99

For comparison:

The Camera Store:$1198.63
Memory Express:$1179.99

Canon 60D Body $919.00

For comparison:

The Camera Store:$1069.14
Memory Express: $1069.99

Looks like we posted the deal at the same time haha.

And yes, with the D7000 out now and the 60D not being much more competitive than 2.5 year old cameras, the price was destined to tank. Canon also has the 60D sandwiched between the T2i and T3i right now. The T3i is priced within $45.00 of the 60D, and the T2i within $150 of the 60D. There is way too much clutter around the $750-$900 price point for Canon IMO. Something's got to give. The prices are so close you'd be retarded not to just buy the best of the 3 if you were in the market.

NCIX.com has 4-packs of Sanyo Eneloop NiMH batteries for $7.99 (usually about $20). Awesome rechargeable batteries for flashes & similar things. These are the 800 mAH ones not the 2000 mAH ones, but they're cheap.

If you happen to come across any good prices on Wacom tablets, can you post it here? I'm gonna retire my old tablet with something newer. The Intuos is pretty sweet, but pretty expensive for something I don't use very frequently. However if there's a good deal on one....

Sure, I will keep an eye out. I bought an Intuos 3 a few months before the Intuos 4's came out and I got a pretty hefty discount on it even just at Future Shop, if I recall. I don't use mine very often either, but when I do I'm sure glad I have it. Goring price right now for an Intuos "small" (4X6") seems to be $200.

Lol, unfortunately I can't just research every piece of equipment people ask me to, I was thinking more along the lines of posting deals as I come across them, as I spend a lot of time every day looking.

Memory Express has the 7D on sale right now for $1,469, which is actually cheaper than B&H's current "on sale" price in the states ($1499 USD). Canadians do pretty good on camera and lens pricing in general though, compared to the USA.

The Camera Store: $1569.00
Vistek: $1599.00

If I recall, Memory Express had the 7D on for $1,2XX on boxing day, but I've never seen it that cheap again anywhere.

www.photoprice.ca, I like using this site to compare prices from different stores in Canada and US (vistek, b&hphoto, amazon, memory express, etc.)

Looks like MemEx has a sale on the 7d body until tomorrow night, $230 off for $1469.

The rumor mills are pretty quiet, but there are going to be lots of announcements, including camera bodies from various manufactures, in March & April this year. If the 5D III was coming out this month or next, though, I'd have expected to see more leaked specs and such. 2011 is supposed to be a pretty good year for bodies/lenses if all the major company's historical release dates, product cycles, etc. hold true as they usually do.

Might as well, haha. The D7000 is so new and with no direct competition, I wouldn't expect it to be on sale too often. They can't drop the price of the D7000 too low either, or it will ruin sales of the D5100 being released this month or the next.

Btw, MemExpress still have the beat by 10% promotion. So if MemExpress' price is still 1179.99 as posted above, you can try to go price beat the Vistek price by 10%....

so comes out to 1099.99 x 0.9 = 989.99 + tax

Another Vistek deal:

Canon 60D with 18-200mm IS lens $1249.00

For Comparison:

The Camera Store: $1399.88

Memory Express: $1599.99 ($1439.99 with price beat on TCS price).

If you could get Memory Express to beat that $1249 Vistek sale price by 10% that is even better, you could get it for $1124.10 which is basically an 18-200 IS for $200 or so.

Memory Express' price beat is 10% instead of 5% of the total price until March 16, 2011, then it goes back down to 5%.

It's actually on sale right now at Memory Express for $1126.99. Thats still pretty good. Going to be tough to find something cheaper than that for Memory Express to beat, and the 10% price beat is over on the 18th as well. Probably not coincidence that they have the lowest price in the city on a D7000 during their 10% price beat sale.

Vistek, however, might beat the Memory Express price for you. Every time I've bought something there they beat a competitors price. Make sure you go back to the lens counter, not the camera desk at the DT location if you go.

D400 will *most likely* be announced this August, and available sometime in November. Nothing is for sure yet though, and it will be at least $1,800. There will be some DSLR announcements this month or in April, but absolutely nothing to suggest a D400 this early, and it doesn't make sense given Nikon's historical releases.

Wow $1099 for a D300s is a friggen steal. It's better in every way than the D7000 EXCEPT high ISO performance (about 1 stop better and a bit better dynamic range), and video. AF, external control, build quality (fully dust/moisture sealed & magnesium frame), size, continuous shooting speed, buffer size, AF motor, etc. is all better on the D300s. D7000 AF is still very good. The D300s is still a best in class camera and it is basically the same as the D300 which was announced in August 2007 but with 1 more fps, virtual horizon, video, and dual card slots. The D300s is a little larger and certainly feels more substantial than a D7000, but parts of the D7000 are magnesium as well, and it does have some dust/moisture sealing.

The biggest differences between the D300s and D7000 in the handling and everything to do with "speed" for the most part, (AF, continuous shooting, buffer, etc.). As far as image quality goes, the nod goes to the D7000 but the D300s is not far behind it, and still as good or better as anything else out there. Slightly better viewfinder on the D300s as well, but again both are so good you probably won't notice. Both will control wireless flashes, and both have built in intervalometers. The D300s uses a different interface for remotes than the D7000, but that doesn't really matter. The only "speed" related thing the D7000 does better than the D300s, is that it will shoot 14 bit (vs 12 bit) RAWs at full speed, where the D300s will slow down to 2.5 FPS.

Personally, I'd take a D300s over a D7000 mostly for ergonomic reasons and the fact that I have huge hands, but they are pretty well the 2 best cameras on the market right now so you will be thrilled with whatever you choose, I'm sure of it.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the cost of the panels going up sharply at certain key size increments. Similar to a 50" vs 55" TV, the cost increase is not at all proportionate to the gain in size. Also I know at least in the TV world it has a lot to do with volume, they might sell 250 50" TV's for every 1 55" TV sold, for example. I'm guessing that applies to monitors too, at least to some degree. 1 inch is actually quite a noticeable gain :).

I have thought about getting an iPad simply to use it to check my photos. I only have a TN based LED screen now. Even though it is "calibrated", it's not good. But the thought of having to sync the photos with iTunes or put them on the web somewhere and then viewing it on the iPad seems a lot of work.

After reading what you wrote about viewing the lightroom library on your iPad, I did a little searching and it seems that there's an app which can use the iPad as a secondary display... Air Play...

Of course, an iPad is more expensive than even the 24" IPS Dell (when on sale)... and depending on the iPad model, it is almost the price of the 27" IPS Dell monitor (again, when on sale)... on the other hand, it is an additional toy to play with.

blitz... in your opinion, how good is the iPad as a photo "checker" as far as the color and such goes? I suppose, it can't be calibrated, can it?

Not sure exactly how you're viewing your lightroom library... but any idea if the calibration setting used on your main monitor will spill over to the iPad when using it with something like Air Play? Personally, I hope not.

edit:... ah... so you are using Air Play... cool

Mitsu3000gt
03-09-2011, 10:54 PM
I don't like using other devices to check my photos, because they never look very good IMO. They don't seem to have the color depth necessary, and as a result, all the whites are blown, and all the blacks are crushed. My iphone, my netbook, and even lots of cheap TN panels have this issue. I'm not sure what the iPad is like though - haven't seen photos on that yet. If I'm on holidays I'll use my netbook to check sharpness and cull photos, but as for looking at photos to enjoy them, I don't like it.

blitz
03-09-2011, 11:32 PM
I have to say, the ipad is pretty damn good when it comes to view and checking photos. It is an IPS display, and it seems pretty true to the extreme whites and blacks in a photo.

I would get the Intuos4... if you search for Wacom on the Dell small business side to get to the Wacom Intuos4 small... same price, but can appy this coupon code for additional 5% off ($8)...

KTJPXMV40$T72X

I have the bamboo fun pen & touch... it is equivalent to the Intuos 4 medium in size. But the feel when using the pen is quite scratchy and plastic-ky (no such word?)... but 180-ish vs 4xx (Intuos4 medium)... I didn't take the plunge as I didn't know how often I'm going to use it. But if I get to choose all over again, I would go for the Intuos4.

...edit... Oh, another thing that is quite useful with the Intuos4 is the wheel... using it to change your brush size... very convenient... I suppose you do lose the touch capability of the bamboo if you go with Intuos4. But for me, the touch function is disabled most of the time.

Another alternative is to try to get a local bestbuy or futureshop to price match this deal... then you don't have to wait for shippment.

So is the only really great thing about the Dell IPS monitors because you can view them at any angle to get a consistent picture? How's this any better (in terms of picture quality) than a Samsung with Magic Angle?

IPS Panels also display colors differently than TN Based panels...the difference being, that while newer IPS panels have gotten better, their display lag is still higher than a TN Panel, so not so good for gaming etc...

IPS panels have nice wide color gamuts, excellent color reproduction, and they take very well to calibration. As for response time, even on a slow monitor, you'd have to be a pretty hardcore gamer to ever see any difference, and the new IPS panels have eliminated that issue anyways with 4-5ms times, you'll NEVER notice that, IMO. You definitely want IPS for photo editing.

Some things are just quicker with a mouse, but your mouse still works in conjunction with the Intuos, so you can switch back and forth without hassle. I was just waiting for this deal to come by, and checking back every day because 21" felt too small and 24" cost a little more. This seems just right. Now time to just bite the bullet and buy one already.

Haha, get the IPS. Don't even bother trying to calibrate a TN or VN panel.

Yes... what he said...

I have a "calibrated" (attempted anyways... using Huey Pro) on a Samsung TN LED... and I'm not satisfied...

I'm still holding out for the U2711... if it became sub 700... too tempting...

Monitor or Lens... good that someone finally bought that 70-200 from the last one from NW and the last one from SE Memory Express... that beat 10% deal so good (and they extended it once again to Mar 31)

I would rather hardware calibrate a poor monitor than use good monitor without hardware calibration. I have a Dell 24" IPS and a wide gamut Dell 30" and when calibrated with an i1 display 2 they are very close.

Good calibration is only $100 or so, it's not a huge cost. It seems like a bit more now that these monitors are getting so cheap though haha.

Personally I'd rather have a non-calibrated good IPS monitor than a calibrated TN/VN panel monitor, because the latter is typically so bad to begin with, and you can't really calibrate them well. When I calibrate my IPS Dell, it hardly changes at all - mostly just brightness, and I notice the colors are a touch better.

Yeah, saw this first thing in the morning on my wife's iPod :P

I was like... "Honey, good news... the 27" Dell monitor is another 100 bucks off from yesterday's sale price."

She was like... "It must be too early in the morning. Keeping dreaming."

I wish I needed a new monitor. 27" is the sweet spot IMO, because I also use mine for gaming. 30" is too big for lots of "everyday" stuff (again, IMO) but 30" is great for photo editing. I'd like a little bigger than 24" for photo editing, but when I bought my 24" it was $650 on sale on one of these same "Days of deals" haha.

I think 27 would be great but only with 1920x1200. At 2560, I think text just becomes too small. Even on my 30 @ 2560x1600, the text is quite small and losing 3" is losing quite a bit.

BTW 30 is not too big. It's fucking SWEET. My wife liked it so much that when I kicked her off my computer and gave her her own computer, she was like "um, well what about the monitor?" and she ended up getting a 30 for herself hehehe...

Yeah my dad bought a 27", and he specifically wanted 1920X1200 (24" monitor resolution) to keep the text big.

I don't mind the small text myself, but 30" is too big for some games IMO. When you have to start moving your head and not just your eyes its too big haha. Maybe if you sat further away it wouldn't be as bad. I'd love to have even bigger than 30" for photo editing though.

Hrmm, has anyone ever though of moving your computer to your tv for photo editing? I havnt tried it out myself so I cant say if it is feasible or not. But I want this monitor 27" sounds sweet.

Dell screwed me over on the 23" deal the other day. It said that the deal was going to be on until 6am est but at a little after midnight here, I couldnt purchase it at that price anymore. It was only available for $339. I'm sure it wasnt sold out either.

So, if your going to buy this deal better get on it quickly. I wish I could get this but after my last MC bill, this is out of the question.

IMO 1920X1080 is not nearly high enough on a huge TV screen for photo editing. Also I very much doubt the colors would be as good as a high end calibrated monitor. Definitely stick to a proper IPS computer monitor if your goal is photo editing.

Nope, they're still around. Internet only, used camera and accessories sales. Most of their stuff is overpriced, with the odd deal.

I just picked up a lens hood from him for my 50mm 1.2 about an hour ago.

The Sony NEX5 + 18-55 kit lens is on sale for $650 at Vistek today. Not a smokin' deal, but $50 less than The Camera Store.

Also Newegg has that awesome Powerex charger/battery combo on for $60 (off from $90). It sometimes goes on sale for $40 but $60 is a good price:

Even 1" more diagonal is very noticeable IMO. 21.5 --> 24 will be a nice step up. I went from a 19" --> 24" and it was a night and day difference. I also used to have 22" at work, and when I would go home to my 24" it was just so much better, and quite noticeable.

Dell's 23" IPS is $339 not on sale (I think it went on for $229 or $249 or something a week ago or so), so 24" seems to be where there is a huge price bump. I definitely wouldn't pay $699 for it, but I think $449 is a fair price for it. I doubt you would ever seen that monitor for under $400. The 23" will run 1920X1080, the 24" runs 1920X1200.

I noticed in one thread, you mentioned the 24" to be too small for photo editing. Given it's been a few month since, are you finding it difficult or looking to go bigger still?

Only reason I ask is because I could take the 24" off your hands should you be looking to upgrade.

I've had my 24" for a long time, probably 4-5 years. When my 24" dies I'll go bigger, either 27" or 30". When I bought mine it was $650 down from $8XX or so on one of these Dell sales, so prices are much more reasonable now. I'd like to be able to see more of my picture if I'm editing it at 100% doing fine work, etc. Basically for games, I don't think I'd go bigger than a 27" because I don't want to have to move my head, only my eyes. For photo editing, I think the bigger the better, so a 30" would be ideal but they are super expensive. Not sure what I will end up with when my 24" dies but I will be going bigger for sure. I am not unhappy with my 24" at all though, it's still a VERY acceptable size and doesn't break the bank. Also on the 30 inchers, icons, text, etc. can get very small and that bothers some people. For example, my dad bought a 27" and was specifically looking for one with a lower resolution so he could have a large screen size but without the super small text.

msommers
04-01-2011, 01:18 PM
Fair enough. I rarely am down to 100% scale so many 24" will be fine. I want to keep it to play games on, I think a 27" at my viewing distance could be ridiculous ha.

$449 was the same price as their days of deals, so I might take it :D

Mitsu3000gt
04-01-2011, 01:49 PM
Yeah really a lot of it is personal preference. My brother has a 30", sits close to it, and uses it for games, and basically everything EXCEPT photo editing. I don't like sitting that close to a 30" for games, and if you move it back, it's hard to read smaller things.

24" is a great size if you don't have $800-$1000 to spend on a monitor. If you're used to a 21.5" TN panel I think you will notice a significant difference with a calibrated 24" IPS in both size and color accuracy. $449 is a very good price. Probably not a door-crasher too good to be true price, but a good deal for sure.

msommers
04-01-2011, 03:32 PM
Well I was just in Bestbuy getting a feel for sizes. Going up to a 24" was big, even moreso to a 27". I just don't know if I can justify a 300 price jump up to the 27" tho. That said, I wouldn't have to buy another monitor. It's really the vertical height that doesn't very much which is kind of annoying.

Mitsu3000gt
04-01-2011, 04:26 PM
24" is a nice setup for duals, that's what I use at work and have no need for any more space. I wouldn't want to go smaller, though.

For photo editing, I would want one single monitor as big as I could get. If I needed 2 screens badly, I could easily just use 2 windows within the single large monitor. Above 24", the good IPS panels start getting very pricey though, as you've noticed as well it seems. 23-24" is kind of the sweet spot for pricing. With 2 screens you also need to make sure they are calibrated identically all the time, if you were using both for editing. Just a bit more hassle I guess.

Is there a particular reason you need/want dual monitors?

msommers
04-01-2011, 04:39 PM
I don't really need dual or have the space, my mistake if I was alluding to that. I'd like one larger one but 27" to play games seems excessive. The big concern is price right now. This 25" from HP seemed perfect..not ips though..urge

I decided to wait it out and save for a 27" despite it's ridiculous price tag. I really only need one monitor and at that size, there is plenty of work space :)

23" wasn't too bad though, depending on what you're coming from.

04-04-2011, 12:47 PM
Hahaha anyone who thinks a 27 or 30 is too big is simply someone who has never used one before. Use a 30 and you'll never go back. Although I do admit, the only reason I went with the 30 when I did was because of the bump in resolution up from 27. Now that 27 is almost there (2560x1440 or something that), it makes it a good alternative. Otherwise no question.. 30 all the way!!!
