The AMA was too busy and the other tow truck would have cost over 60 bucks.

Thanks guys. Just in case you are on this forum.

Yes you cannot tow someone with anything that can give (rope/chain)

They don't enforce it, I had an officer control traffic while I tow strapped a car out of the snow bank on the side of the road once.

Wish it was legal here as long as proper guidelines were met. In New Zealand it's perfectly legal.

OK, we used a tow strap. But, in our defense:

- my car was stopped in a busy road

- The AMA was busy and told callers that they may want to arrange other towing options.

- The regular tow trucks could have taken any amount of time.

- I was in the towed car and in full control of the brakes and signals.

- we went less than a kilometer to the mechanic

- I didn't want to turn down the help when I needed it

If it had been a normal day, I would have waited for the AMA tow truck.

I dont think anyone was faulting you. It happens. It needs to get done.

Now if you are towing a busted ass car from your driveway to the mechanic like that. That is a different story. You were trying to clear traffic.

Exactly. Cops won't bother people who are getting traffic cleared on a shitty winter day, they will however bust someone towing their engine-less Camaro down Deerfoot at 110km/h in the summer.

This. We had a bylaw and parking authority guy watch us pull an old man out of a drift two days ago. Although he did say if it didn't work he had to call a tow-truck and charge it to the owner.

Although I believe the law is more for people towing long distances with a strap, not just out of a ditch

My dad is batshit crazy when it comes to tow strapping. He insisted on tow strapping my car home from Waiprous basically when it broke down last year, doing 100km/h with a 20 foot tow strap is ridiculous.
