I'm still curious to see how epic they can make it on a TV miniseries budget.. effects have come a long way, but far enough to do this book justice? hmmm

Looks like they made some good casting calls though.. should be a pretty good series. Great source material to wok from, in any case.

Sean Bean is epic in anything he does. But I have to agree, the casting is really well done, I can tell even without them saying names who some of the characters are just from mannerisms.

I think they will skip over a number of "smaller" events, but it will be awesome.

And to add to this, the fifth book is out June 12th!

Been following the Show since GRRM announced it on his blog. Can't wait as I have read the series countless times. I am going through it on Audiobook now.

Really? Still excited... it's been what now, seven years??

I was right into this series but the wait over the next book has become ridiculous.

Either way, very excited for the tv series... great choice to but Bean in there... the dude is built for Medieval.

Hope he actually releases the fifth book this year though, the release date has been pushed back so many times that I'll hold my excitement until it's actually published.

Have you read books 12 / 13 by Brandon Sandersen yet? He did a great job of picking up where Robert Jordan left off, and books 12 / 13 are probably two of my favorites in the entire series.

This is a BIT of a :hijack: , but Brandon Sanderson also has his own series starting up. The series is "The Stormlight Archive" and the first book, published at the end of last year, is The Way Of Kings.... and I have to say, it's bloody brilliant

They did spend $5-10 million making the first episode. The per episode cost is being estimated at $4.5 million. From the sneak peaks the set design and costumes look awesome. I just hope the SFX are better than the first season of Spartacus. That was pure cheese.

Well, if they can match the production value of Rome and/or Band of Brothers, then we are in for one HELL of a good series

So what happens in 2015 when HBO wraps season 5 of Game of Thrones and is looking for material to shoot season 6? Here are the Ice and Fire publishing dates:

Game of Thrones 1996
Clash of Kings 1998
Storm of Swords 2000
Feast for Crows 2005!
Dance of Dragons 2011 (maybe)

Predicted date of book 6 is 2018.

I am already boycotting the books, I will probably boycott the HBO show as well.

Anyone want to buy Books 1 thru 4, first Ed and signed by Tons of Fun Martin?

They set a date back in 2009 and look how well that went. Don't get me wrong, I love the series, but Martin needs to get his shit together with regards to some sort of professional consistency.

I've been saying it for years now, Sanderson will be the next big fantasy/sci-fi name. Warbreaker is an absolute must read.

z24_wheels
03-08-2011, 04:08 PM
Exactly Tram. They have set "publishing dates" a few times.

Don't forget, A Feast for Crows was split in half and released. He was pressured to put something out. That means in 2005, A Dance with Dragons was half done. It has taken 6 years so far for him to write half of a book. This book will be as shitty as Feast was, because once again, he is being pressured. Wait until HBO adds some pressure.

I haven't found a doorstopper fantasy series yet that hasn't completely fallen apart when it comes to the end part of the story. Wheel of Time is probably the most famous case.. it got so bad, the author died! Not a big deal though because WoT fucking sucked anyways.

The only guy who looks like he might be able to follow through on his ideas in a reasonable timeframe is Steven Erikson with the Malazan books.

A Song of Fire and Ice.. great stuff for the genre but... Why can't guys just write trilogies instead..

You should keep reading the Wheel of Time... it did get bad but Sanderson's finale is, thus far, amazing.

I haven't read any of the Malazan series but I've heard good things.

To stay on-topic though, I'm still excited for this series... I really wonder how "true-to-the-book" it will be.

I hope it's not another Lord of the Rings catastrophe. I still can't believe they axed Tom Bombadil and Glorfindel...

All fantasy has a "slump period." It seems to be part of what makes fantasy, fantasy. Then again, A Song of Ice and Fire is a HUGE undertaking, I'm not surprised that there were some mixups here and there and some slumps. Hell, I'm writing a fantasy novel where there are THREE main characters and I'm already getting overwhelmed trying to keep em all seperate and distinct XD

I had some problems with show compared to the book, yet I think my biggest beef is the intro to GameofThrones. Why does it look like a 1993 CGI video game into, it just looks cheesy!

Second biggest issue, waiting weekly for my TV crack, then waiting 4? years for the rest of the series.

On point 1: I kinda like the opening. There are a few easter eggs built into it if you lose closely enough ;)

On point 2: Well, they weren't sure there was going to be a second season of Rome when they were filming the first season, until about halfway through the actual season. And they managed to pull out an entire season, with effects, multiple shooting locations, and a GIGANTIC budget, in less than a year (the next season came the next year). So, when HBO starts flinging some cash around, they can get shit done.

Honestly, the HBO series will put pressure on GRRM to finish the series. He has 3 seasons of books that HBO can make in to episodes before he has to have his next book out.

I've been wanting to read the series for a while, so I've refrained from watching the show as of yet.

However I am a huge fan of WoT, SoT, and all of David Edding's books.. So I'm looking forward to reading it.

If I can manage the WoT slump and the SoT slump, I can manage anything..

I'm also reading the Death Gate cycle right now.. Once I finish that, I will move onto these books.

Also, I'm uber stoked for Sanderson's last book for WoT

For tonight, my thoughts:

Following how the shows have kind of bounced around parts of the book against the timeline of the show, I'm hoping to see Daenerys' boot to the face of Viserys today :D One of those huge plot points of the book where she starts to completely grasp her position. Also hoping: Arya's training, Cat's voyage, and Ned learning what it's meant to be a King's Hand XD (Sean Bean playing a frustrated and pissed off politician would be hilarious XD)

So far, been very happy with the series :)

Vagabond142
05-02-2011, 04:51 AM
So... review: Ep 3 was much more character driven, and two of the three things I hoped to see were in there. Kinda sad they left out Cat's voyage tho, Ser Roderick on a boat would have been a lovely bit of comedy :) Arya's training happens in the last few minutes, but still, cool to see the water dance as it starts :D

They also did a bit more time jumping with this ep. What took, what, 150-200 pages in the book was dealt with in little over 55 minutes, and a bit out of sequence. Still... very good.

episode 4 had lots of wolves

We saw summer and ghost, which was good, I was feeling the wolves were a big part of the Stark character development. But I dont think we've ever seen Shaggy yet have we?

They twisted the story in a few places again, like in the joust, Sansa's told about the hounds face. You dont hear about that until late book 3 I think. It's not horrible, but the series is definately changing how I feel about a few characters. However people like visceries (sp?) are spot on, I hate that little punk and he's barely said anything in 4 episodes.

Theon Greyjoy actually got some screen time too, but I feel that scene, which if I recall was another made for TV, actually worked better. It shows him as a ward, but also as more of a political prisner. In the book, I felt like he was actually happy being a ward of the Stark's until much later in the series when all hell breaks loose.

05-10-2011, 01:53 PM

colsankey
05-10-2011, 02:05 PM
I'm talking about in epi 4, there's a brief snippet where littlefinger tells Sansa about the hound's face and how he was burned.

I thought that occured much later in the books, but maybe I'm wrong.

Part of the problem is with reading the better part of 4 books in a 8 day stretch, the story kind of gels and I had a better overall feel for the story again, but some of the details like when exactly it happened got lost along the way.

Vagabond142
05-10-2011, 02:07 PM
In book 1, it is the Hound himself that tells Sansa that his brother pushed his face against a brazier when he was younger. He told her after Joffrey dismissed her at the feast, and ordered the Hound to escort Sansa back to the keep, the night after the first day of the tournament. It happens right after the scene where Robert gets buttfuckingly drunk and exclaims his intention to compete in the melee.

b_t
05-10-2011, 02:30 PM
the guy they cast as Littlefinger is perfect, been liking his performance.. I had thought Varys had a lot more of a role to play by this point in the story. He really hasn't been getting much screen time at all. Gregor Clegane wasn't huge enough imo he's supposed to be eight feet tall but oh wells.. I've actually been enjoying the new scenes added to the show. The one with Jaime outside King Robert's door standing guard was pretty good, and the one with Theon was really good. Nice foreshadowing there.. in the book he did some pretty crazy shit that seemed very out of left field, which is unfortunate considering the consequences his actions had

colsankey
05-10-2011, 02:40 PM
so I'm only half retarded I was sure it was the hound, I just lost where in time he talked about it. But right after the feast seems right.

Totally agree about Theon, I said as much above, but the book really didn't portray him in the same light early on as the TV show. The TV scene with Theon and Tyrion makes much more sense for the following events, allthough in Martin's defense, he wrote the books so many years apart it's understandable if with all the character development he's done the odd character gets a little glossed over and by the time book 2's done and 3s worked on, it's a little late to revisit book 1.

Ep 5 seemed to be one of those "steamroller" episodes, ie where they plowed through 200 pages of the book in one episode. Well, part of me was hoping HBO would ignore the source material and let Ned live, as I think Sean Bean should at least be nominated for an Emmy, as well as Peter Dinklage (tyrion) and I'm a huge fan of both of their work in this series. But Alas, old Ice fell and Ned did his "funny dance" as the Hound put it later in book 3.

If you watch True Blood, Lafayette should be long dead but they kept his character going, and I had bets going that they would do the same for Ned Stark. Bravo to HBO really for proving my guess wrong, a very bold and brave way to go, I just hope it doesn't kill the shows ratings and jeopardize future seasons. Most of the TV fans aren't readers of the books, and don't understand that Ned's death is really the beginning of the story, sort of a prologue writ large.

I can't wait for the last episode, I'm wondering what kind of CGI they will use for the last few chapters (not going to say about what if you haven't read the books- no spoilers) or if they'll go animatronic.

The gf and I were talking, and Sean Bean cannot catch a break. In LOtR, he doesn't get past the first movie, sans a flash back scene, and now he gets his head chopped off before season 1 is over. As someone who has not read the books, they better follow this up with something amazing, because Ned Stark was one of the few reasons for watching this show.

I don't see why it was "stupid as fuck." It may not have been action filled, but it followed the book for the most part. Some scenes did seem unnecessarily long i.e., the scene with the whore.

Just seems like they didn't use their time wisely. Spending time on, in my opinion, worthless things when they could have spent more time on others.

It felt well paced and interesting. Nicely sets up for the next season too. Looking forward to it!

Just finished. Good series! I'm not familiar with the books, but maybe I should give them a try.

The books are great until book 4, which was a complete POS in my opinion. Very scattered, no point to it really, and it skipped several of the major story arcs from books 1 2 and 3. I won't spoil it for anyone, but once you read the first three books, I know you'll agree that the 4th seems a lot poorer. Oh well, I hope the 5th which is out in a few weeks makes up for it. Dragons!!

He isn't the first, and he is far from the last. IIRC, I think something like 80% of the characters in Game of Thrones don't make it to book 4

If this is about the TV series: its amazing. I just checked it out and got caught up on it. Spectacular show/first season (it's like my dream show) I never miss the opening credit sequence for each episode even, I luv the music and the map. I can't believe (if you're new to the series like I was SPOILER COMING)...

... Edaard Stark and Khal Drogo were killed off. THEY WERE MY TWO FAVOURITE CHARACTERS!! Stark was #1. Noble, honourable men amongst all the shit! But I love how they were established and developed and you sense that they could be the sparks of hope & truth that can burn down the evil, then BOOM and BOOM --- the old lore, tradition, honour, and ways carried by these two characters was tremendous and so deep, which is part of why i liked them as characters in the story... and yet they are taken out. You book boys can probably tell me everything, but no thanks i'm here as a "TV miniseries" person as the thread title specifies.

I hope this doesn't turn into a kids & teens series with all of them running around. Not sure how they will keep season 2 as awesome, but I am very intrigued and looking forward to more awesomeness FOR DAMNED SURE.

Read Tyrion's chapter waiting for my ride after my service appointment, got me pretty pumped about the book.
