Didn't quite turn into the peaceful mecca of democracy you all thought it would.

At least 13 people died and 140 were injured in clashes between Muslims and Coptic Christians in Cairo on Tuesday.

Both Coptic Christians and Muslims were killed in the violence, which began during a protest by Copts against last week's burning of a church.

Egypt's Sunni authority has urged Muslims to help rebuild the church, calling its destruction un-Islamic.

The clashes come two months after a suicide bomber killed 23 people at a Coptic church in Alexandria.

In January, an Egyptian man was sentenced to death for shooting dead six Copts and a Muslim policeman in Naga Hamady, southern Egypt.
Tensions flare

The violence erupted when Coptic protesters blocked a highway in the Egyptian capital, protesting against the burning of the church in the province of Hilwan.

The rally angered Muslims who wanted to pass through. Witnesses said both sides threw stones, and the army fired into the air to disperse the crowds.

The Grand Imam of al-Azhar issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the attack on the church in Atfih, Hilwan governorate, as "a distortion of Islam".

Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayyib called on Muslim residents of the town to help start rebuilding the church and to refrain from sectarian violence, Egypt's official news agency, Mena, reported.

Meanwhile, thousands of Coptic protesters continued their sit-in outside the state television building. They are calling for the rebuilding of the church, better protection for Christians, and a full investigation into last week's attack.

Copts - who make up about 10% of Egypt's population - have often complained of harassment and discrimination, and argue that attacks on them go unpunished or result in light sentences.

The government in the predominantly Muslim country denies discriminating against Copts.

Fine, I'll just bump my own shit then:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12690935

Hundreds of people armed with knives and machetes have clashed with pro-democracy activists in Cairo's Tahrir Square, Egyptian state TV says.

Footage showed stones being thrown by both sides in the square. At least two people were reportedly injured.

The people who entered Tahrir wanted to force the activists continuing a sit-in out of the square, reports say.

Tahrir Square was the epicentre of protests that forced President Hosni Mubarak to step down last month.

"Hundreds of men carrying knives and swords entered Tahrir," the AFP news agency quoted a report on Egypt's state TV as saying.

The TV channel showed footage of hundreds of people involved in a stand-off and throwing stones at each other.

"A group of gangsters attacked us with stones, they seemed to be wanting us to leave the square," Gamal Hussein, one of the pro-democracy protester, later told Reuters.

Groups of activists have continued to gather in Tahrir Square even after Mr Mubarak's departure. They are demanding a complete break with the Mubarak regime.

But critics say it is time for life to return to normal in the Egyptian capital.

Insecurity has been rife across Egypt after police disappeared from the streets of major cities during the mass protests.

On Tuesday, at least 13 people died and 140 were injured in clashes between Muslims and Coptic Christians in Cairo.

Egypt's military, currently governing the country, has struggled to keep control of the situation.

Not sure what the deal is with Christians, but they are always knocking on my door trying to tell me about the bible.

Same thing in Egypt. While traveling/working in the Arab world, not once has a Muslim tried to convert me to Islam.

However, I have been approached twice by Christians who wanted to talk to me about Jesus. WTF?

Don't tell me you wouldn't be slicing up johavas witnesses if the government broke down here

 You clearly haven't been to any of the not so liberal countries. Converting to a religion other than Islam in Saudi, Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran is punishable by death. So is being an Atheist. Look up Apostasy. So why would they bother trying to convert you since it's illegal for the majority of their population to believe in anything other than Islam?

I dunno what you expect within such a short time period....

It's gets worse before it gets better.

Problem now is, EVERY group with interest is funneling money into the side it backs.

Guaranteed, the CIA is funneling money to pro west side, Iran funneling money to pro Islam side, IMF and World Bank probably in there offering $ for a sell off of resources and a push to a "open market" economy.

We are living through a historical event, I wonder if its accounting will be any more accurate then our history before the internet and satellites...

What this shows me is how utterly unreliable our own historical record is. If we can't KNOW what is going on NOW in today;s age of information, we have NO CLUE about what was REALLY behind some of our greatest turning points in our past.

Fascinating shit.

Seriously though, if all hell was breaking loose, you wouldn't take the opportunity to
thin out some of the groups of people that you are opposed to? like "children below the poverty line" ?

Kind of a weird question there dude...

You want to know why people in countries that, as you say, Ive never been to, aren't trying to convert me to Islam?

Other problems I have with your poor question:

Are you saying they aren't going to try because they just assume that I am already a muslim? Isn't it obvious when I'm the only goofy white guy around, that I am not Muslim?

Your question is weird and stupid.

My original point remains: Christians love to go out of their way to help people find Jesus... Even in Muslim Countries.

I have three very close friends flying out tomorrow for Cairo, and two that just came back last week. As academics this is the best time to be there.

Every once in a while a seemingly prominent member of Beyond.ca outs themselves like a bathroom stall homosexual politician.

This is one of those times.

I certainly hope that any credibility you may have carried with the readers of beyond.ca after your exhaustive saturation of content in the Current Events section is let off at this stop. I hope they'll see what was just said here.

And no, I wouldn't. I harbour no rage for any particular religion regardless of its self promotion. That logic would suggest I should be slicing up anyone who advertises anything to me.

As with Apple's full on sensory assault on the public with iPhone ads, I choose not to buy it. If you don't like what you're being sold, don't buy it.

Calling for a violent end to any particular religion is not only hypocritically selective, but logically devolved. I won't take it personally if you disagree because I don't care, but I'd just like to see better logical connectivity in the world.

Love me or hate me, I'm not wrong.

Fascinating shit. Fucking eh, Toma.

I read Dallaire's Shake Hands with the Devil and he outlined how improbable it was to expect Rwanda to evolve 400 years in a matter of weeks. I agree that it's going to take time in Egypt, I'd just hate to see the micro-outbreaks occurring like this for the next 50 years.

I just dislike how after the peak of the drama is over with, we as the watching public, move our attention back to keeping a house the same way it is in a laundry detergent ad.

Since you have trouble following... Why bother converting people when your country is already 98% Muslim and the fact that Muslims believe everyone is born into their faith? The social pressure alone and the fact everything is under Sharia law is going to pretty much ensure everyone ends up being a Muslim or saying they are one to avoid persecution. Just look at how often Christian converts end up being killed or having their churches burnt down in Muslim countries.

Islam teaches that everyone is Muslim at birth because every child that is born has a natural inclination to goodness and to worship the one true God alone, but his parents or society can cause him to deviate from the straight path.

While conversion to Islam is among its most supported tenets, conversion from Islam to another religion is considered to be the sin of apostasy, and under some interpretations and in some jurisdictions is subject to the penalty of death.

Oh and Johovah's Witnesses and Mormons are NOT Christians since they have added new books and to the original bible that all other sects of Christianity follow. I don't care what god you follow but no one is going to call people who added a bunch of new books written in the 1800's to the Torah Jewish. Neither would we call people who added to the writings of the Qur'an in the 1800's Muslims.

Are you a muslim? Are you speaking from experience? Did 10/12 muslim people come up to you and say that they would never convert anyone because they assume everyone is already a muslim?? wtf?

As the only white guy in any direction for miles, I can assure you, that no one assumes I am born into their religion. Generally I've noticed a very overt racist and religious bias against Indians, and phillipinos, and many others who are obviously not born into Islam. I'm kind of lucky cause I'm the token white dude and everyone thinks I have porn (very popular dude).

Your question is dumb - Your defense of your dumb question is stupid.

Like I pointed out already, that social pressure never stopped anyone from trying to convert me to a Christian while I was in a Muslim country - twice.

So just FO already. IF you want to prove to everyone how much you know about Islam go nuts. I made an observation about Christians trying to convert me to Chritianity. Now you are trying to call me out for not knowing anything about muslims? WTF?

I still stand by my original statement. Your stupid question is stupid, and so are you.
