Problems uploading a custom avatar

Guys, I'm having trouble uploading a custom avatar. It either says my max pixels is 100 by 100, or Maximum bytes is 1000. I use photoshop to create my avatar, and its below 100 by 100 pixels. Also when I save my avatar on photoshop, I make sure it's quality isn't so high (slightly below medium) so it does not result in a large file?

Any help? Thanks!

try saving as a .gif

and make sure it's not over 10,000 bytes (even lower-quality picture files can easily be over that filesize).
