OK I am hiring a sales person that will be doing some office and some local travel (southern alberta).

I have never been down this route before so I am wondering from those on here that are either get vehicle allowance or pay it what is normal and about how much.

Please note this is for a sales person that would be using the vehicle for sales - not hauling pipe accross site in his 3/4ton chipped and lifted diesel pickup.

The last 3 companies I've worked for payed 36, 42 and 52 cents per kilometre over the past 4 years for travel. Id say you want to be at least 40+

I'm paid $463/mo car allowance plus $0.14/km.

I get paid $0.52 a km. Some O&G companies in the boom were close to $1.00 though. Depending on your industry keep it competitive. If the guy drives a lot a month the difference between $0.52 and $1.00 could be the difference between a decent employee and a good one.

Ya not going to be a ton of driving/ month maybe 300km/week so
I'm thinking I will be going with a flat rate/month for the vehicle and maybe $0.15/km or so on top of that to cover fuel costs.

A790 if you don't mind what sector do you work in?

$0.40-$.50 is quite average and fair.

Car allowance + gas card is another option.

I prefer the straight dollar amount allowance, sales reps in Calgary receive between $300-$1000 a month depending on the company.

If it's just the occasional 'work trip' that makes you say 'you need to drive to work instead of taking transit /motorcycle/?" then go with a car allowance (taxed) I was 600$/month last year; although I should have been mileage based (per CRA).

If it's more of a day to day thing - untaxed @ .xx/km is fairer.

Make sure you allow for projected fuel costs for the year, when you lowball the /km rate and fuel skyrockets, you'll have people knocking on your door - but you should also state what those fuel prices are so it's crystal clear if you're paying 1.20/L you're covered, at 1.50 we might need to look, etc.
