View Full Version : Original "stand up" video games.

I was 15 years old...

Pacman:

- Found a book that deciphered the Pacman algorithm, studied, applied, and became a GOD to every other Mac's Milk's children that waited in line before me.

- Made "quarter" slugs in high school machine shop class that the early video games would take. Fellow class mates were like, "WTF are you doing on the band saw instead of making the cannon like our teacher told us to".

Galaga:

Something like avoid all fire to the enemy, and by the third stage the enemy never fires back.

Good times.

I ended up getting into computer hacking when video games became to complex to be fun. I peaked at the original NES, and balked at the "new" 3D" version of Zelda.

I've got many cool stories about those early stand up video games.

You?

I used to go play Battlezone in the afternoon sometimes (had spares for the whole PM in the first semester of grade 11:D ).
High scores, iirc, were usually in the 40-50,000 range. One day I pop a quarter in and it racks up 16 million as my starting score, instead of 0. I play for a while and end up with like 16,020,000.
The guy waiting for me was usually the high scorer- I can still picture the look on his face when he looked from the 16 million back to me when I gave him the machine:rofl:

In high school I probably dumped $10-$20 on gauntlet weekly (the 3d one that was out around 2000).

That and Marvel vs Capcom 2...

double dragon, road blasters, and spy hunter were my favorties at the roller skating rink.

they had donkey kong jr. at the bar/restaurant by our cottage, and i played that too but it was already pretty old school by the time i became interested in video games.

Funny nobody's mentioned Street Fighter 2 yet. I thought this place was full of fobs.

I played this so much when I was a kid that I could wrap the game with one quarter!

there was a wizards castle at Southcenter too, that's where i used to spend upwards of $10 on House of the Dead 1 in JH, then it got to the point when we could beat it on $1 consistently, then you had $9 to buy an Orange Julius hotdog and a strawberry smoothie. Also lots and lots of time crisis 1 and jurassic park - the booth kind.

Area 51, Virtua Cop, Metal slug, asteroids with the brightness all the way up and you'd get a headache like Virtual boy. i spent 50cents on Spy Hunter every morning waiting for the bus inside Family leisure center in JH.

4 player WrestleMania, TMNT Arcade.

as for sitting down, i know they had a standing up version but anyone remember this?:

http://www.arcade-museum.com/images/105/1057035970.jpg

and of course all the racing stuff like sega rally, ferrari challenge, crazy taxi, Sanfran Rush, i even played nascar because of the force feedback - remember that? sooo real!!! lol

edit: also those Neo Geo 6 games in one

Haha oh yeah, Spy Hunter was awesome.

Anyone remember Dragon's Lair? It was like you were controlling a cartoon and as a kid, that was pretty exciting at the time.

Here's another one I played in my childhood:

vjnoSkY7PL8

They only had the full stand up cabinet here in Calgary, would have loved to play it on either the sit down or full "motorbike rider" machines.

Another great, SUPER hard to beat:

And to REALLY show my age.... this is one of the first arcade games I ever played, with the SIMPLEST music that still sticks with me to this day XD

I also remember when I lived in Stettler for 5 years, there was also like a "hallow gram" type video game, where it was somewhat like dragons lair but with real life actors and you were a cowboy or something... anybody remember this game?

edit: Found it! Time Traveler

Well, I have my cabinet specced out and the PC built and running MAME + front end. I just need to figure out button configuration and whether or not I will buy a prebuilt keypad/joystick setup.

Will probably end up building the box during Easter weekend.

I have tons and TONS of Rom's saved if you or anyone is looking for a particular game to throw into their MAME setup.

I think there was a member on here 4 or 5 years ago who had a mame box, and had pictures of it and stuff on here. I can't remember who it was, though.

i would love to have one, but I wouldn't build one until I move and buy a house LOL. no sense in building it in a condo (3 stories up) and then just having to sell it or ship it across the continent when i move.

would love to see some pics, etc. of your guys' builds!

I'm the OP. Thanks for the replies.

Here's a couple of other old school arcade games:

QIX:

TEMPEST:

http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/t/tempest.png

Another way I used to try and get free games was by crazy gluing a piece of sewing thread to the edge of a quarter. I could get the credit, but the quarter wouldn't come back out due to a one way flap. Those bastards thought of everything!

I can imagine the look on the guys face when he emptied the machines at my local Mac's store. Among the regular quarters, he would have found found an assortment of washers, machined slugs, and quarters with thread glued to them:D

I was the master of the guile glitches. 4 combo magic throw, opponent doesn't have a chance!

VKQkgdWfvrY

When I got bored and wanted to leave, I'd do the guile reboot glitch and shut the whole machine down haha.

And Mame stand up machines? We have one at work. I'm prob going to build one for my garage too, so I can smoke and play just like in the old days haha.

I probably spent the most money on the punisher arcade game at Southland Leisure Center, that game was awesome.

There was also some shooting game with pistols that I played in the early-mid 90's, it came out for a console as well, I can't remember what the name of it was though.
I did a search, Lethal Enforcers! Video is for SNES but whatever.

That is probably one of the cleanest control setups I have seen.

What kind of screen do you have in that cabinet?

I have been wanting to build one for a while now, but really have no interest in wiring up a Wells Gardner.

I had a sega saturn, and I wanted that game so bad for my birthday, I think my mom called every department store in Canada and no one had it! - I was so upset, but I have since found it and played it on my PC with my xbox controller, not the same but still so much fun
