So, i've been plannin a reno for some time, and came accross this little program. It's a free, 3d design and architecture program. The learning curve is next to non existent. There are models that download in seconds from a huge library (including nearly every ikea kitchen cabinet, and appliance).

In about 3 hours i was able to build nearly a complete 3d mock up of my kitchen and living room fully to scale.

Sketchup is a pretty fantastic. I've had my house modeled in it for a few years now. Planning a kitchen reno and it is invaluable. I don't want to admit how much time I have spent modelling, changing, and so on.

When I'm modelling, I'm usually sitting in the living room, so i just grab a tape measure and measure my wall, cabinet, etc to get the size to use in my model.

Below is what the wife and I hope the finished project will look like.

(and it is amazing all the different models you can download that other people have made)

I've had it for a while but never really made any headway building stuff in it...

i would reconsider the space around that column; I take it that its a structural column. What is the space around it on that island extension. If its not that large then whoever is sitting there will be bumping into it with their arm or leg and it'll be an uncomfortable place to be seated.

Also you can download vray to render your sketchup models it will make them look more realistic can give you a better real world feeling of the space.

This is what took me 5 hours to mak

Home Theatre Subwoofer box 15x15x15 with seperate plate amp section. Made for 1" MDF, its a modification of the Parts Express "The Drake" subwoofer.

Draw a circle on the surface you want a hole, then select the push/pull tool to create your hole. (can activate that tool by pressing "P")
hover over your circle.. it should go shaded.. then click and push (to make hole) or pull and you'll get a peg/cylinder coming out of the top of your plate.

Thanks, got it with the Recessed sub holes and the plate amp cutout now.

Sait actually uses this program in its Architectural Technologies course.

Thanks for the reminder about this though. I'll model my place and see how it looks!

You are correct, that will be a structural column. The short side is planned to be ~3 feet, the long side ~ 6 feet. That low area is intended to function as eating area for non-fancy meals. (as the island will take up the space where current kitchen table sits)

Do you have a suggestion about how to change it to make that part less awkward?

Take out the island, make it a nice shiny steel stripper pole.

Personally, I think that smaller table attached to the island looks REALLY strange. not only do you have the whole column issue, but the way that the little table is atached to the island just looks really weird and akward.

If it was me, I would scratch the little table idea and extend the island the whole length. If you want, you could put an overhang and bar stools on the left side of the island. Also, I would avoid putting a transition from tile to hardwood right under the chairs; they might chip both the wood and tile at the transition. why not run hardwood through the kitchen too?

Also - it looks like you have a dining table right there anyhow, so you might not need the seats in the kitchen in the first place.

Build the island around the pole. Get the pole as near to the centre as possible. Not ideal, and will make granite/stone countertops a bitch, but IMO, till look better and less awkward.

nice i want to do this exact same theme - all ikea crap obviously is the easiest route, but is the table in front of the fridge an L bench seat? hard to tell, also is that a hamburger on the counter with the black seats?

Very nice looking design you have there. At first i thought the second pic was a render of your design, like GorG was recommending.

Sketch up is good for initial design mock-ups. It's quick and easy to use. I'm not a big fan of the texture mapping process.

Crymson,

Play with the styles a little bit and get rid of the endpoints, it will look a lot cleaner.

You can also hide lines if they are in the way.

Were u in AT ercchry?

Your model is pretty good, just needs doors, but it's well done.

I'm an AT at SAIT.

Sketchup is okay, really dislike the textures but can add your own though.

Use other 3D software that is much better. Revit and 3Ds StudioMax, which are a hell of a lot more powerful, but more complex, and cost big bucks to buy.
