although AMA's drivers are bottom feeders for sure, absolutely retarded. I dont know where they find them, but they have issues backing in, removing the hook, and sometimes they will tow AWD vehicles with out the use of a dolly. :banghead:

In old school terms a 2' 4x4 used to apply downward force on a rollover to reduce drag damage.

In my world its a piece of 3" tube notched for chains and hook, with angle base to stabilize and a disposable prop for easy 1man setup.

I'd highly recommend a Canon S95 pocket camera.
Very good pocket camera for low light images. Around 400$, tax in. Picked up one for myself and have been very impressed.

It shoots RAW images if you need to do some post processing.

04-17-2011, 01:02 PM
If you want one a little cheaper, the Canon SD1400IS is pretty good, although looking at the specs, the S95 probably beats it.

Either way, for compact cameras, the canon line really can't be beat.

Another ninja edit...

Found an excuse to go oldschool last night :bigpimp: Yep that's the sling! Did ya know we still have them?
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/cgyreefer/sling.jpg
Pissed off a deck from another company, he indicated I was number 1... Guess he wanted to drag this up on a deck and totally screw up what was left of the rear axle.

I keep saying I'm going to use the sling more - is it ever handy; probably could have used it on the remains of that ML - save the second truck. I really need to spend more time practicing with it on wrecks.

Just a older way of doing things; back when you had steel bumpers putting the sling against the bumper (like this) on heavier vehicles, or under the bumper worked nicely. Plastic bumpers made them obsolete - nowadays you look at the sling and plastic starts breaking. :D

Chains hold the towed vehicle to the towbar, cable lifts. Tow bar in front of bumper keeps the vehicle from joining you in the cab; or on lighter cars they'll extend the boom out and cradle the front with the rubber slings to do the same.

Edit - Random rant
Slings and the towbar (basically sling without the rubber) were the standard towing before they gave us all these fun hydraulics. Now it's wheel lift or deck... Slings have fallen by the wayside, but in a lot of cases, are still useable - but we've stopped doing so as it's "old school" (and a lot of vehicles you just can't use it on). I'd rather sling the damaged rear of a suburban, than watch it get dragged up a deck on what's left of the rear brake assembly (knowing it also has to come off - the same way). Nobody really teaches slinging anymore, AAA/AMA dropped it from their towing manual circa 03, There's only a handful of staff a CWT who'll pull it out (mostly those guys who were towing when we were in diapers).

It's one of those handy pieces of equipment, like a big ass crowbar - is it necessary? nope. Is it probably going to scratch? Yup. But when you need it - boy do you need it; and nothing else is going to do...

No - but they sure had to call one for the 1000lbs or so that was knocked out of the sweeper. Should have grabbed a pic of the landoll we sent for the sweeper :)

Questions never come up as to why I'm taking pictures, stock answer is "taking notes". There's a bit of CYA involved - we get a lot of people who try to blame us for every nick and scratch after they're towed - reason for my towcam. Generally I do grab some pics of stuff that looks wrong (ie bad fitting bodykits, front bumpers that have popped etc) or things that look like I could do them - before I back up.

No different than anyone else - except you guys have to take your pics rolling by :) I just happen to be standing there usually waiting on paperwork

I have to admit I never gave much thought to how bikes are towed before.

ive seen them strapped to the wheel lift , but i think your setup is the right way to do it.

Kinda depends on the equipment you have, twin lines often do it that way - no risk of blowing out shocks by overcompressing them; and it's a little more stable and quicker to hook up.

But a lot of bikers object to that method...

Both ways get the job done - this way just looks a little nicer :)
