The City is asking the public what they should do with it

What do you think?

Sell it to the highest bidder? Then let the owner do as they please with it.

The public is full of idiots. They might as well sell it and make some cash, then they can throw another Tim Hortons or Starbucks up.

Too busy of an intersection for anything of that sort (SB or Tims)

On a less serious note, how about a pure gold dig em' statue? Smack Smack, Sugar Smack, Give me a Smack and I'll Smack you Back.

That's how rational people would do with an empty property.

Too bad you're overqualified to work for the City.

Retarded. If they don't want to expand 16ave any more (since there's now a ring road), just sell it.

I believe they are selling it.... i think they are just asking what they should allow to be developed there.

Yeah, that's just what we need, then some dimwit from the city will put up a 30 KM/H playground zone along Eastbound 16th Ave and Centre St. Both roads already move along at a snail's pace during rush hour. I love green-space, but I can see the city doing something like what I described and that scares me. Pass.

Sell it to a developer and put in some commercial space.

Not a playground, a park, like Tompkins Park on 17 Ave. & 8 St. SW. There's no playground zone there, and the limit is the same, so I can't imagine they'd need to put a playground zone sign up; besides, who would obey it anyway? lol

Now start thinking like someone who works for the City of Calgary... start drooling a little out the side of your mouth... yeah, okay, now begin violently bashing your head against a table until either the table is severely damaged or you're unable to recall what the first letter in the alphabet is. There, you're now on the same functional level as one of them.

No parks on 16th please. We already have a vagrant problem in that area, especially around the safeway.

Well, maybe just clean green space, no benches or anything.

They should run a street car up to 16th ave, and that can be the turn around point on a giant turntable. :)

Toma
03-22-2011, 01:54 PM
Or that intersection along centre street is in dire need of turning lanes.... probably not possible... but that would be practical.

There, you're now on the same functional level as one of them. That's not really fair to the City planners. What they actually do is probably more like this:

Present a proposal to council that makes sense (like frinkprof's), be rejected and told to do something totally stupid instead. So, being a good public servant you build that, then get blamed by council for building something useless instead of building the thing they wanted to build in the first place.

In the end, they do end up bashing their heads into tables to forget how much their lives suck. You've probably seen this and mistaken that headbashing for the reason why we get stupid things in the City. Common mistake.

It's a weird piece of land because it's too small for anything big and too big for anything small. I'd say build an Asian Supermall there and connect it to New Asia and hope that some interesting shops and restaurants actually open up in New Asia. Then make provisions for a station for the subway/train line that will run up Centre St. as already mentioned...

Oh and make sure to include and arcade and indoor go-kart track.

This may be true, and I've also just realised that Tomkins Park has been in Calgary since the very early 1900's, when city hall was probably more common-sense-based.

Why was the Brick built up against 16th avenue anyways? Some of the nearby buildings (such as the ATB a few blocks west) are far enough back from 16th that they didn't need to be torn down to expand the road. According to its datestone the ATB building wasn't built until 1980 -- wasn't the Brick on 16th and Centre built a few years after that? Was it for the added exposure that the building would get from being right up agianst 16th, even though they must have known that the building would need to be demolished in 20-25 years?

That being said, it certainly is a high exposure intersection (16th and centre), especially for an inner-city NW person like myself. Access would of course be a problem, as I suspect that it could only be accessable from Centre street (maybe) and that side street (1st street NE I think).
