My friend has a masters in psychology and currently works for a not-for-profit company. She is pretty much maxed for any further salary increases and is looking for new opportunities. I am trying to help her find a job in for-profit company, and looking to get help from you guys on any companies she should consider with her background.

She would also like to charter to become a chartered psychologist but is having difficulty finding a professor that will supervise.

She should look into becoming a maternal mental specialist. Someone who deals with PPD, PPA and PPP. It's a specialty that is VERY understaffed in this city. 1 in 8 new moms need these professionals and there are only 2 organizations in this city who deal with it, one being by refferal only.

Does she have a Masters in Clinical Psychology or some other branch? She is really limited with a Masters degree in terms of trying to look for for-profit jobs as Alberta is the only province in Canada that will let you use a Masters to practice. If she's smart, she'll go back to school and get her Ph.D.

Has she considered working for a private school or the CBE as a counsellor or psychologist?

My father-in-law is a Ph.D (Educational Psychology). He worked with the Dept. of Ed for many years making recommendations to the minister on special needs programs. When he retired he spent a lot of time consulting for special needs programs for private schools. Educational Psych seems to keep him busy even in retirement, but the budget in the CBE is not good (educational consultants are being let go left and right these last few years - no money in the budget to keep them around).

If she wants to get into Education, private schooling will have more funding for Psych than CBE (cut, cut, cut!).

My wife majored in Sociology with a Psych Minor. She has done well for herself in the field of HR.

Does your friend have a specialty in the field of Psych at the Master's level? It would be useful if we knew that. It would also be useful to know where her experience lies.

As DRKM mentioned, the public service is in need.

This opportunity with National Defense expires at the end of the month.

Corrections is looking for Associate Psychologists and Psychologists as well. That might be worth a shot too.

If your friend is adventurous, CSIS is looking for Intelligence Officers. The catch to this one is you usually have to be bilingual (even if the second language isn't French, they will still consider you) Post Grads in Psychology can move up with time and become profilers, analysts or hiring specialists who assist HR people in weeding out new hirees who aren't mentally compatible in law enforcement or policework.

Lastly, when working for CSIS you usually have to start out in Ottawa or Toronto.
