Instead of creating a thread title that has nothing to do with your request, I'm going to edit it.

Next time please be more descriptive when posting in the General Car Forum. :)

Are the XR4Ti's any good? I have heard great things about their performance and handling, yet they are included in Consumer reports' list of used cars that are Not Recommended, due to excessive ownership costs and general reliability issues.

What does the Real World have to say?

Merkurs were way ahead of there time thats fosure, but are only for the mechanically inclined

they use the same 2.3 turbo motor as the svo mustang, t-bird turbo coupe, and turbo couger xr7, solid motor. tranny, most usually go for the t5 swap.

handling, from everyone i've talked to who ownes/ed one, outstanding.

On a slightly related note..... Anyone know the owner of a Red Sierra Cosworth? About 2 years ago maybe only 1 I cant remember there was one for sale for about $7k at a lot on Haddon road (near trail bottle exchange) Apparently it was brought into the country by someone who emigrated with it....

What are the primary weaknesses that require attention? Or are they like Italian cars, which are prone to deterioration if not scrupulously maintained?

What are the usual things that need attention, and what should a person look out for if they were to look at buying one?

I really like the old SVO Mustangs - an acquaintance of mine from Wpg. who worked at a speed shop on Portage ave had a black one in 1984. I was very impressed with it.

As far as the 2.3 litre motor goes, I am not aware of any major weaknesses with it. Are there any?

Merkurs are a Ford Sierra other than a slight body and engine difference, i think i read somewhere that the only reason it was named merkur is cause GM had copyrights or w/e on the sierra name.

Great handling car, fast car, etc etc. Reliability, it only left me stranded once in the two years i've owned it, and that was because i ring slipped off the piston and destroyed a cylinder ,not fun. I have spent a lot of money in repairs but it is all worth it.

Any more questions?

It was actually named Merkur because it was the Mercury division that brought over the Merkur during the 80's. Merkur is supposed to be the German equivalent to Mercury.

As for differences, it starts with different body styling (deeper front bumper with integrated brake cooling ducts, different front grille to feed air directly to the intercooler, fender flares to accomdate a wider stance/ wider wheels, and a much different rear spoiler which increased rear downforce during high speeds).

The engine was a 2.0L Dual Cam 16V turbo (whereas Merkurs used a 2.3L SOHC Turbo engine). The cosworth engine was designed with one thing in mind, homologation into touring car racing. Sierra's started out with a 2.0L NA engine, and Cosworth was commissioned to put the race bred 16V DOHC head/ turbo onto the base 2.0 block. Capabilities of this engine far surpasses what's in the Merkurs today. The suspension/ braking system of the Sierra was also designed with the track in mind. When the Merkurs came over here, they were more highly detuned and marketed for daily driving, and families than for the track. Therefore, what I mentioned above, we got none of in the Merkur. However, fortunately all of the parts are interchangeable, and the aftermarket support is huge even to this day!

hmm i'll have to go reading again, i thought they chose the merkur name after they figured it couldn't be a sierra....i'll look.
