Cavernous pothole takes pickup truck driver by surprise, police warn of dangers on country roads
Posted on 01 April 2011 by joann lawrence.

A three-foot wide hole spanning a rural road south of Vulcan surprised one early morning driver Friday morning. Rain washed out the road, exposing a culvert and leaving a yawning break in the asphalt. The truck was hung up on the culvert and had to call for emergency assistance.
Just after 8 a.m. RCMP were called to a single vehicle collision on Township road 160, south of Vulcan. A pickup truck was traveling west on Twp. road 160 and drove into an open hole that spanned the road from ditch to ditch. The road was washed out from a night of rain and the driver did not see the hole in the road until it was too late.

After the truck hit the hole, more of the road crumbled, making the hole in the road even bigger.

The driver of the truck was not injured, but was taken to Vulcan Community Health Centre for a precautionary check. There will be no charges laid against the driver of the pickup truck.

The RCMP are warning drivers who are traveling country roads to be on the look out for washouts and other obstacles due to the high water run off this spring.
