Been thinking about picking up a bike and finally decided on a ducati monster 696 or 796. I was considering buying brand new, but found some really good deals on some 2009/10 models. I'll probably be spending 7-9k.

Anyone own a ducati monster? How's the maintenance? Powerful enough? Are they reliable?

Cool bikes, a lot more expensive to maintain then the japanese bikes. I rode the 996 model monster or whatever it was. Lots of torque.

I hope you're friends with the folks at revoluzione, if you actually plan on riding it ;)

Put it this way, my suzuki is at 25,000 km and I just need a valve check. It's never been in the shop for any issues and I ride it like I stole it.

Not that fast... and looks dated, IMO.

For relatively the same price, I would ride that Monster over the SS for sure.

They should be too bad on maintenance. Only thing is the Desmo valve adjustment at around 12,000km at around $1300. Other than that, it's normal maintenance items.

The monster looks nice. :D

Thanks for the comments - think I'll be happy with this bike.

So far everything I've read mentions a major maintenance around 12k, but nothing out of the norm aside from that.

For the extra 2300, I'd rather buy brand new.

Join the local ducati forum. You'll get a lot more information there.

www.ducwc.ca

Great bunch of riders, very helpful if you have questions. Definitely go for the Duc.

Calgary Ducati lists a couple monsters, they have 3 2010 ranging from 8595-9930. I looked at this bike when I was in the states and was quite impressed. Seemed like a nice bike and I liked the seating position aswell.

In AB? For Ducatis? I was talking to a guy at the dealer cause I'm trying to avoid buying brand new if I can, he said they'll be coming in soon on trade ins, just gotta wait a bit.

Few monsters on kijiji.

06 for 6300
08 for 8300

+1 on ducwc.

Also - What's the deal with buying new from the dealer? Can I expect to haggle on the price like buying a car? I would assume so... and what are the chances I can get them to throw in gear? TIA

No much on a used bike, especially this time of year, and especially in AB.. You mayyyyyy be able to get most of the tax knocked off, And a discount on gear, but thats about it.

I don't watch duc's.. Not a fan myself.. So I watch jap bikes for deals.

Its into april now and the weather isn't great, the longer that happens the better the deals get.. It was into may last yr I scooped up my R1, used bikes often come with gear, no promise it will fit, but you can always sell it.

You can always get deals from dealers especially if they a few in stock. usually around 10% off on the bike. Hard to get deals on gear though, especially if it's duc gear you want.

I like the Ducati's, but was sceptical about reliability and high maintenance costs. I took a few Monsters for a test ride; 2010 696, 2007 s2r 800, 2005 s4r 996, and I liked all 3 of them (the 696 was a little slow)... but then I took a Triumph Street Triple 675 for a rip, and it was all over... bought the Triumph on the spot!! It's also waaay more reliable and I think it looks better than the Monster too.
