You just need to buy an unlock code off ebay, should cost you no more than $5. When you put a different sim in, it will ask for the unlock code.

ok thanks, im trying to unlock it to fido, so do i put my fido sim in?

one more question:
do i need to root the phone before i install any android 2.1 or 2.3? and if i use just the stock firmware without rooting, is that fine?
