Our weekly snowfall warning has been issued.

To all the people who say "Stop complaining, its Calgary, it always snows in April"... Fuck that. I've lived here since 1992 and I do not remember a winter/spring with such an extreme snow/melt cycle. Literally EVERY week, Huge snow fall, melt, Huge snow fall, melt... etc.

Add the fact that this snow is falling overnight where the temps will be cold enough for the snow to stick around and start melting tomorrow morning, it should make for a very fucked up drive to work.

I think we should announce "Warmth Hour" where everyone in the world idles there car, turns on all electronics and cranks heating for an hour in order to combat winter forever :)

our city already fails @ earth hour, no doubt we'd screw up warmth hour

as crappy as it is, i'm happy dealing with it as long as this is as worse as it gets for our 'natural disasters'. not alot to be worried about here in this part of the world compared to other places regarding environmental disasters. plus this rush to get summer tires on as said 100x elsewhere - remember where you live ffs - 1 week after all gravel is picked up imo, you forgot how to drive winter conditions in a flash snowstorm, you shouldn't be driving here.

i think out of all southern canadians, i think Albertans take summer for granted the least :D

Nope, I have a route to school that avoids all heavy traffic and intersections, but it's unplowed. Takes the same time as my normal route on a good day. If it's just wet tomorrow I will take my Subaru.

There is always one more big dump in Apr/early May.

As long as temp holds up, this should be ok. But I may stay home tomorrow as my both accidents in my driving life is during spring snow storms.

I agree that periodic snow dumps throughout the year are normal but it's been colder than normal for months now. Seems like we are seldom over the past two years above historical averages. Always below the curve. It sucks.

Come to think of it, it is kind of ridiculous. If the weather is like this into May and it starts to cool down in September, I can seriously run my snow tires 8 months of the year. Added benefit, no speeding tickets, can't drive fast. LOL

Quoted from another Calgary forum:

A look at historical information from the weather network indicates that there might be some evidence that this indeed is on the lower spectrum of things as far as April's in Calgary are concerned, despite our reputations for having poor springs.

Through the first 12 days in April the past 11 years, the highest temp has only been lower than this year twice, the lowest temp has been lower 7 times, and we have recieved more precipitation only twice.

Apr 1-12 Max temp, Min tem, precipitation

2011: 14.5, -7.7, 19.5mm
2010: 15.3, -9.4, 5.7mm
2009: 16.8, -8.5, 1.1mm
2008: 17.2, -13, 17.3mm
2007: 12.5, -10.1, 27.6mm
2006: 15.7, -2.6, 19.9mm
2005: 23.3, -5.9, 1.9mm
2004: 20.9, -5.7, 0.8mm
2003: 19.4, -13, 18.5mm
2002: 16.9, -17, 10.2mm
2001: 10.5, -13.4, 18.8mm

From the data it looks like 2001 and 2007 were worse years than this year so far. Although if you extrapolate the current forecast for the next six days and compare to the next six days in 2001 and 2007 you get this:

2011: 14.5, -7.7, 41.5mm (I took the mid-point of their precip projections)
2007:17.5, -10.1, 31.8mm
2001: 18.9, -13.4, 19.2mm

In both 2001 and 2007 the weather got warmer and drier. If the current forecast holds close similarity this will be the worst start to April in Calgary this century.

Well that was an interesting drive to work :nut: Thanks City of Calgary/Carmack, for doing absolutely no preparation on any of the roads and Deerfoot. :banghead: I JUST saw 3 sanding trucks rolling out down McKnight, as I was pulling into work. A little preemptive road spraying would have been nice.

Jesus fucking christ, the whole way up was driving through 6" of frozen slush. Made me really appreciate a lightweight (<3000lbs) AWD car.

Not too shabby. Worst was AGAIN people who couldnt drive. Hwy 2 north went from 2 lanes to 3 lanes and it looked like a bunch of curling rocks going down the road (not in lanes, swerving like an SOB). Some people doing 40 or 50 in the fast lane.... just madness.

I love my AT's and 4x4 in these conditions.

Not a fun commute at all, very slippery coming out of Kincora. I get onto Stoney Trail West and there is a Jetta that has spun out and hit a pole by the 14 th St exit, bumper-to-bumper trying to get past that. Get to Cardel and waited 20 mins to hop onto the 301 to DT, which proceeds to get stuck pulling out of every stop! Yes I have winter tires, oh well it's expected in Calgary, at least I got a 45 minute workout shoveling the heavy wet snow before I left for work.

my commute was fine, heritage macleod and crowchild north were all great. back roads up near the U were terrible, though, good thing i have snow tires because I wouldn't DIED somewhere with my summers on, i'm sure of it. sidewalks still not plowed near the U, so everyone is walking on the car tracks in the middle of the road. again, good thing for the winters because without them there are some areas where you would get stuck if you had to stop/slow for peds walking in the middle of the road.

So from Airdrie to Cross Iron Mills, there were probably 8-10 cars in the ditch with the drivers still scratching their heads... Once you passed Cross Iron it was just wet with a bit of slush and drivers doing maybe 70kph to 80kph the rest of the way into calgary. Not too bad...

Hmm. I had to drive across the city from far NW to Sunridge Industrial area in the NE in a 2WD pickup truck (no sand bags) with cheap all-season tires which is possibly the worst type of vehicle you can drive in this weather. Took an extra 10-15 minutes to get to work but meh no big deal. I claim people just can't drive.:)

Agreed!

Especially with this slush where every passing car wants to drench you (I'm on a boulevard). I would run to the other side of my car and hide, haha.

Back end kicked out on my drive in while switching lanes because of the foot of slush in between lanes. Skeeetchy...

My new snow removal technique for the car in this weather is throw on my ski jacket (no zippers sticking out) and throw my arms over the hood and just push off all the snow. I didn't do it today but a week ago when it dumped I did that and it took like 30 seconds to get my car snow-free lol.

almanac is bs. There was a study that put the Almanacs predictions to the test and it found that it was right 52% of the time, and given that there predictions are hardly specific, you'd most likely achieve similar results by basing your predictions on how many bubbles an asian tramp can blow with a mouth full of jizz.

EDIT ...

WX.ca (http://www.wx.ca) is the best weather page in Western Canada. Some guy (Randy Peters) has gone through a ton of trouble to set up a fully functional weather station in his back yard and post the results on the web.

http://wx.ca/?service=page/Tech

The almanac page is not the "farmer's almanac." It is a historical almanac of average and record temperatures with the current month plotted on it.

I didn't want to have to host a pic but this is from today - April 16 ...
